How To Adjust Your Axle Weight On A Tractor Trailer And Correct Overweight Issues

In this video I will explain how to adjust the axle weight with a heavy load and the proper way to correct an overweight issue when talking to the shipper/ customer.

In no manner am I an employee, driver, or representative of J.B. Hunt. I am merely a contracted employee for a small business owner who pulls various trailers outside of the normal work season: spring, fall, and winter.

    That final invoice for weight is so perfect cause you could fill your tanks with diesel and that would add to your drive axle weight and you'd be set.

    JADT: Great video. Thanks for posting this. I have never seen another video on KZread showing (and explaining) this process so well. We covered this for about 20 minutes one day in CDL school. But then I had to do it several times myself out on the road solo. It can be a confusing thing to explain to someone. This video helps new drivers a great deal. By the way, what's your dog's name? Thanks again... Joe

    Whenever I have a heavy load, I push my tandems all the way to the front before I weight. I had a load that was 45000 pounds with my tandems all the way to the front and was over only 20 pounds on my tandems and all I had to do was move it 2 slots.

    Very informative! I always wondered how you guys corrected the weight on each axle. Question though, is a smart thing to do is to go straight to a scale after the trailer is loaded, or take the chance and get hundreds of miles away from the shipper?

  • @ThatsTrucking

    @ThatsTrucking

    3 жыл бұрын

    It all depends on weight. Rule of thumb is to always weigh anything over 30,000 pounds but some loads between 20,000 and 30,000 pounds may need to be weighed depending on how it’s loaded. It is always best to go right to the scale even if it’s 10 miles in the opposite direction you have to go. You never want to get hundreds of miles from the shipper because if you are overweight and you have to go through a DOT weigh station at some point you don’t to have that “what if” factor playing in your head.

    That is absolutely true but, a lot of new drivers aren not taught the basics. Sliding a fifth wheel requires a little more skill so that nothing gets broken when doing so. Be safe out there, thanks for subscribing, and remember take it one mile at a time.

    The answer to that question depends on what state or states you'll be pulling that load through. It's called the bridge law. There is no one size fits all answer to that question. California is very picky about it for example.

    If you are a company driver then the company you drive for pays for all scales tickets. They should provide you with a fuel card which is a multipurpose card for fuel, pay checks, and weigh scales.

    On the trailer or in the truck? 🤔 In the truck you would set both tractor and trailer brake. Get out and walk towards the back of the trailer where you see me in the video and there would be a pull handle or a pull button in its place. Go back to the truck and press the driver brake only. Sometimes you have to rock the truck back or forth to get the lock pins on the trailer to release. Once they are release, reverse backward with the truck to take weight off the steer tires and drive tires or pull forward with the truck to take weight off the trailer tandems. Remember when adjusting weight each hole on your trailer can very between 150-400 lbs of weight change depending on how close the holes are. There will a updated video of this available within the next few days.
