How to Adjust Valves on a Briggs & Stratton Twin Cylinder Engine

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This #diy #repair video shows how adjust valve lash on a twin cylinder Briggs & Stratton riding mower engine.
When the engine cranks but won't start, you may need to adjust valve clearance. For Briggs & Stratton engines, you'll need to find top dead center of cylinder motion and go 1/4-inch past that position to adjust valves accurately.

There are about 20 videos I've seen that show the wrong way to adjust the valves. They all show loosening the screw and then adjusting the gap with the nut. They then suggest locking the screw down. This is backwards. This is showing using the screw to adjust and the nut to lock it down. This is correct. There also seems to be a little confusion about intake/exhaust...which is on top/bottom. I found one that was correct and then this one too. Kudos and very well done! Thanks.

Why do you need to go 1/4 inch past TDC to correctly set valve adjustment on Briggs& Stratton engines?

Great question. Briggs engines use a compression release cam to lift the exhaust valve briefly so the engine doesn't lock up when you restart it. Going 1/4 inch past TDC enables you to set valve adjustment with the valve completely shut.

At TDC are both intake and exhaust valves in the closed position?

Yes, also, you turn engine clockwise in order to find TDC with both valves closed so rockers will both be loose

Not on briggs twins. 1/4" past for valves closed. See the reply to the first comment by Sears (poster of this video).
