As a basically curious guy who likes to watch appliance repair people, auto mechanics, etc., I was determined to replace and setup my broken SRAM. I watched several videos, followed the instructions closely, and found that what worked on the stand didn't work while riding. The technique described here was brief, accurate, and helped me understand the actual process, especially the fine-tuning-on-the-trail part. Time for a invention! Both of us came to the same conclusion of using a wedge of sorts, so I'm sure there's others out there doing the same, I just happened to be the one willing to post it up in video form. A plastic wedge expanding wedge could be better, as the plastic would not mark up anything on your bike.

Great video. I just had to do this because my bike wouldn't go into the high gear. Only the small and middle gear. I found that I had to adjust mine with the chain in the largest gear, then adjust the derailleur to move as far out as it would. It turned out to be too much because my chain came off while testing but to make a long story short, I can at least now use all 3 gears. I found my derailleur was also a bit low so I had to get this fixed first. I also found that you can just insert the screw driver in through the middle where you pulled it with your finger in order to make that adjustment without too much fuss. It took a while going back and forth but I got it done. I tried other videos and couldn't get any of that to work until I saw yours. So thanks. I know it's old but it works once you start adjusting things with it.

Two things: First make sure that the low adjustment screw isn't blocking the derailleur from shifting fully down. If it is, slowing adjust it to allow the full shift to occur. If the stop screw isn't the issue, then you'll need to allow more cable slack to be given from the barrel adjuster. Many riders forget that its the only true adjustment for the front derailleur.

Hi Jake, thanks for this! Before I actually start following your procedure I'd like to ask you. My front derraileur was perfectly aligned and brand new. After about 300 miles of riding, it is not shifting to the small cog anymore and it's driving me nuts.Can you tell me what exactly I should start tweaking? Is it the low screw? the hi screw that I should adjust for this to happen? I ask you because I'm not starting from scratch, so hopefully I can avoid the whole procedure and mess up worse.
@tonyfrancis13199 жыл бұрын
I watched a good half dozen or so videos on how to adjust this. Best video I have seen. Not too fast and not too many camera adjustment changes or video effects. Only problem I have is that I am working on a bike without a barrel adjuster on the FD. The shifters are also a bit older in design. The rear shifter has "click" settings. The front shifter doesn't. It's almost back to the "grind-it-until-you-find-it" style. I adjusted the FD starting the same way every video has, by releasing the cable tension and making sure the derailleur moves freely. This is when I noticed that the plastic chain guard was not allowing the derailleur to shift to the largest gear. I removed it since it was only screwed on and it was getting brittle. So I just prevented it from breaking later. Now it still doesn't get onto the large gear unless I really push on the shifter. Without the barrel adjuster, is there something more I can be doing? Like I said, I adjust it as best I can following your steps and all the others until I get to where everyone tinkers with the barrel adjuster. Figuring that the large gear is for more torque and this is just a used bike that I am fixing up for my mom I don't really think it will be an issue. I don't really see her using it since she is trying to find something to do that is easy on her foot since it is broke. Any ideas from anyone?

Hi :-)I´m situated in Sweden and is trying to adjust my front derailleur....In the Swedish videos they put the chain in the inner gear on the back derailleur....And I cant get the bike to run properly regarding that advice.But if I Watch this video....where you put the chain in the middle of the back derailleurit seems more logical....and that the two screws at the front derailleur isnt for adjustments only just screws for not letting the chain fall of the inner and outside gears....And while having the adjustmentscrew at the handlebar in the middle....you just start adjusting the hole thing when its at the middle....and then adjusting the wire and the two screws...Good explained.No for the bike :-)

I've been trying to sort out my front mech for weeks now. Viewed a few of the SRAM tutorials. I'm going to try this one. My problem is my chain overshoots onto the large crank randomly. Sometimes it shifts up fine, sometimes it overshoots. Could the problem be with the front mech itself, or is this purely a mechanical issue that I just haven't figured out yet?
@MongooseJake11 жыл бұрын
You'd be able to tell that your front derailleur needs adjusted if it hesitates to shift either into or out of the middle gear mostly. Does it grind and hesitate to shift to the big ring? Or, is there a pause for the shift from the middle to the small ring? If so, then it's time to tinker. Otherwise, go ahead and ride!

The chain is loose.When i peddle it it skips a tooth wheel on my form cranks.i even took a link off and it still does it.i checked my front crank and there was not any play ,i checked my back wheel and it was tight .i even tighten the back wheel a bit .it still skipped a cog of the cassette.It's like i;m in the twilight zone.If the Free wheel was the problem the .The shift would not go normally high too low gear.Even Irwinn suggested I take it to a bicycle shop for a check

Also quite new to cycling , bought a mountain bike and in certain gears the chain rubs on the front derailleur. The shop are telling me this is normal , just the way it is. Is that right?

What is the shifter setting on for the cable tension adjustment #2 for a front 3 speed
@MongooseJake
10 жыл бұрын
No set or special setting for the middle ring on a 3 speed crank. The barrel adjuster is there for you to play with to get the shifts to and from the middle ring to be as crisp as possible. That's a basic trial-and-error process. Simply get it close on the workstand and then ride it down the road (trail riding is more difficult to adjust things during) shifting in and out of the middle ring, making tension adjustments as you go until you're happy with the performance.
@catsup111111 жыл бұрын
Is a little bit of rub acceptable? Or am I asking for more wear and tear by allowing this?
@gvblk4yt10 жыл бұрын
I understood the part of finding the mid point on the upper cable adjustment but not what postion the shifter barrel was in ?
@MongooseJake
10 жыл бұрын
The barrel adjuster is the only true tuning you can do for a front derailleur. You use it to make your shifts in and out of the middle ring (if 3 speed cranks are used) as crisp as possible (or to make shifts on a 2 ring crank quicker).
@MongooseJake11 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want any rub in the system. Aside from the fact that the derailleur cage is metal, rubbing on a metal chain (metal on metal means wear and tear) I can't stand a noisy drivetrain. Drives me nuts on a long climb!
@ProfSScott7 жыл бұрын
video is good. what needs to be noted is the hassle of getting the replacement parts. Mongoose company needs to know the rip off artist that sell thier products and a list of local bike shops that are not true Mongoose Co. approved dealers , such as i.e. Sun Cyclery Phx. Az. as the don't know proper parts replacement!
@davidz38737 жыл бұрын
I've got a question about my front derailer: Can I just take it off completely and not use it? I have a two ring crank and I only use one of the rings, ever...I also have a lot of chain rubbing going on with the derailer. I'd love to just remove it but not sure how that will affect my set up. Thanks!
@MongooseJake
7 жыл бұрын
You can remove the front derailleur on most setups without issue. Just try it and go for a few rides. If you don't miss it, and you have no dropped chains, then you can ride single rings forever from then on...

Great video! Filled in the blanks I didn't know.
Thanks jake....haven't seen a front deraillleur adjusted in this manner but it as you say will get you close...liked and subbed BTW....and I'll check out some more of your vids...
the only video that really helped me after watching 20+ stupid ones
Thanks dude, fixed my shit.
Thanks for the comment, and yes cheaper derailleurs can be a headache! My personal overall favorite is the Sram X7, not to costly but is responsive and holds its adjustment well with minimal flexing. My method is simply what I've found to work best for me over the last 15 years.
Thanks, good tips with the screwdriver. Makes me crave a screwdriver.
great tips. it's really helps. thanks.
Thax for helping me out,great explanation !
Thanks brother man!!! I finally got it! Thanks to your video.

Glad this video's still being helpful to fellow riders!
Really easy to follow, thanks!
Just try it, lol. My method is one I've used for well over a decade and it works well every single time. You are not in danger of doing any damage, but rather the screwdriver is just used to hold.
Thanks! Great method, worked for me :)
Thanks, man! It was great!
No problem, glad to be of help!

Very good. Thanks
Wow, done at first (first after watching the video :D), subscribed.
Yes, the shifter should match the position of the chain on the chainrings.
nice easy to understand Thanks!
Cool!!!!Thanks Man!!!
Thanks, Jake.
Thanks a Bunch!!!
Great presentation. What I am finding out very quickly is that I need a maintenance rack to accomplish all these functions. Any rack recommendations ?
Thank you for sharing your expereice with public. It has been very helpful. I have a question, The gear of my bic, Giant brand, slips whenever I want to accelerate the bic or go up a hill. What can be the cause? Thank you
Thank you!!!!
Thanks heaps!

Thanks very much for this video, tried another and it was a waste of time. Cheers
You'd be able to tell that your front derailleur needs adjusted if it hesitates to shift either into or out of the middle gear mostly. Does it grind and hesitate to shift to the big ring? Or, is there a pause for the shift from the middle to the small ring? If so, then it's time to tinker. Otherwise, go ahead and ride!
The Front Gear 3 one when I put. But it is showing atchuly it's not in gear again I push then it will go Top gear in front
One thing that you didn't mention, is whether or not you have to have the shifter in 2nd gear or not?
I have a Schwinn mountain bike .Wall mart Schwinn.the side winder.Recently i bough a chin replacement from Schwinn.
When you use the screwdriver to hold the derailer over the 2nd front ring, what gear is the front shifter set to...i.e. 2nd?
this is first class I like this so much and it is very helpful.. I suggest to all my friends to subccribe

Thanks, & glad to be of some usefulness!
I don't know if this is a stupid question cause im pretty new to riding...but what are the tell tale signs that your front derailer needs to be adjusted?...you mentioned that its not setup to your weight and riding conditions in the shop...what would tell you that that is the case?
Also quite new to cycling , bought a mountain bike and in certain gears the chain rubs on the front derailleur. The shop are telling me this is normal , just the way it is. Is that right?
This is probably a stupid question, but can I follow these adjustment tips for Shimano, or are they for Sram only.. ? Very good, if not the best front derailleur vid out there - thanks!
Did you put the shifter in to 2 as well?
What is the shifter setting on for the cable tension adjustment #2 for a front 3 speed
@MongooseJake

Is a little bit of rub acceptable? Or am I asking for more wear and tear by allowing this?
I understood the part of finding the mid point on the upper cable adjustment but not what postion the shifter barrel was in ?
@MongooseJake

The barrel adjuster is the only true tuning you can do for a front derailleur. You use it to make your shifts in and out of the middle ring (if 3 speed cranks are used) as crisp as possible (or to make shifts on a 2 ring crank quicker).
I wouldn't want any rub in the system. Aside from the fact that the derailleur cage is metal, rubbing on a metal chain (metal on metal means wear and tear) I can't stand a noisy drivetrain. Drives me nuts on a long climb!
video is good. what needs to be noted is the hassle of getting the replacement parts. Mongoose company needs to know the rip off artist that sell thier products and a list of local bike shops that are not true Mongoose Co. approved dealers , such as i.e. Sun Cyclery Phx. Az. as the don't know proper parts replacement!
I've got a question about my front derailer: Can I just take it off completely and not use it? I have a two ring crank and I only use one of the rings, ever...I also have a lot of chain rubbing going on with the derailer. I'd love to just remove it but not sure how that will affect my set up. Thanks!

You can remove the front derailleur on most setups without issue. Just try it and go for a few rides. If you don't miss it, and you have no dropped chains, then you can ride single rings forever from then on...
Hi, I have 6 gears and 3 at front which gears to I put them in to set front cable tension please

I tend to work from the middle front (as in the video) with the chain on your middle rear cog (on a 6 speed rear, that'll be gear #3 or 4) to set the front.
will it work if i don't use Stanley screwdriver? and what company are the pliers, you haven't told us in the video

As long as everything's still in good working order, there's no reason to replace it. However, you would get better performance from a brand spanking new drivetrain, but that's entirely up to you!

First thing to try is to adjust your low limit screw. It sounds like yours is set to high and is blocking the shift from completing.

Mine shifts into the small gear when I do it by hand. But when my fat ass is on...it won't shift down to the small gear, it'll get stuck, so I always run second gear and big Gear in back for up hills. Tension maybe?
