How to Adjust a Continuous Hinge “Piano Hinge” Door.

Here’s one way to adjust a continuous hinge door. They have more adjustment than you might think. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Thanks Drew, Love learning new tricks from you. Those horseshoe shims are much easier than the straight plastic shims we use. Keep it up and I might need to start sending you checks. I've envious of the calm jobsite. I usually have 30 people wanting to use the same door I'm working on.

Awesome! Glad you find them valuable. Wasn’t sure if anybody would once I started 😆. We work for some great general contractors who do their best to have the work go in sequence and so each trade gets an opportunity to do their best work. 😎

Great video sir , placing shims on the correct side of a hinge to move the a door a certain way is like an art 😅. Please do more videos on shimming metal doors. Ps At work a door closer arm bracket was loose do you strip screws I removed the screws drilled the holes next side bigger only to find out I used a drill bit 2 size bigger 😑and now I can’t find a big enough screw screw . Any way I can fill the hole (metal door and frame) and retap new holes ? Thanks again for these great videos.

Thanks! One option for your issues would be to use really long screws like 5 or 6 inches if there is wood or header material above the frame. When the metal is tore up attaching the screw thru the frame and having screws that drive into the header could be an option. Depending on model, how far the door opens you can “shift” all the screws let’s say toward the latch side an inch. Giving you fresh Mets to drill and tap into. Shift the frame location the same amount on the door location. If that makes sense. Let me know how it goes for you. 😎

@@drewinstallshardware it’s a metal frame filled with concrete I moved the arm over a little bit but I wish there was some kind of metal filler which will allow me to retap the holes once it’s cure

Google "Blind nuts". Work really well, go in a larger hole and leave a pre threaded hole.

Drew I have a door with a continuous hinge that is in a area that gets afternoon sun and will expand to the point that the bottom latch side corner will start run causing a closing issue I am going to see if shimming the top will may help this. Thank you again for all the great information.

I hope it works. The sun definitely affects the doors and I hate when they get dark paint cause they heat up and move even more. If it doesn’t work there can be ways to move the frame also. 😎

Great tip. At first I didnt think only 1/16" shims would be enough to clean up such a big gap but they did the job! On a separate note, it would be nice if you turned down the music a little bit so that we can hear you more clearly. I find that in order to hear you i have to turn up the volume high and then the music is super loud

Thanks! I appreciate that feedback. The audio levels are one of the hardest things for me to do so working each time to try to get them better. I hate video with bad audio! 😎

Don't agree with this. All you have done is bend a straight hinge and it will lead to trouble over time as the hinge starts to "eat" itself. Alternate method is to taper the jamb with layers of duct tape.

Well, it’s like they say, if you can’t fix it with duct tape, then you aren’t using enough duct tape 😆 I agree if it was an extreme amount of shimming. 1/16th of an inch in 8 inches of a 83” hinge I have found isn’t gonna cause any problems but you are right about anything that bends a hinge can cause issues. Thanks for weighing in on it. Never tried the duct tape method but might have to give that a shot. Thanks!
