Pointing out that you turn the adjuster 'up' on pasenger side and 'down' on the driver's side was a vital piece of info which will have probably saved me having to remove the caliper and hub to reconnect the bits inside after i'd wound it apart 👍

I had this as well on hard left turns. I had a build up of corrosion in the hub which caused an insanely annoying squeaking/high pitched grinding sound and slower speeds. Had it removed under warranty and after that that scraping sound came up on left turns, but I think by the end of my spirited 40 minute drive home I’m pretty sure it disappeared🤔 I kind of forgot about it tbh. The mechanic also advised me to occasionally drive slowly and gently apply the handbrake to take off any corrosion in the drums. Since I never apply the brake brake whilst moving (I’m not drifting my 325d) I’ve never actually worn down the drums, so it makes sense 🙂

The handbrake lever should be released and the spring beneath the lever compressed before adjusting the shoes. You can push it back with a screwdriver until it catches on a small retaining clip located inside the spring, then decompressed after (this is to put tension on the cables). The normal jacking points can be used for each individual wheel.

Yeah after having some corrosion removed from my drums I’m now up to around 7 clicks which I don’t like, want to adjust them down to 4 as well. Only issue I see here is consistency in both sides? Surely both sides need to be exactly the same, so a method of counting turns or something similar should be used? I might be wrong and I’ve never adjusted a handbrake but that’s just what I can understand. Maybe count each notch on that adjusting wheel so you do the same each side. This obviously only works if it’s equal to start with🤔

  • @aaanton11

You just need to adjust the shoes with the wheels until they are just touching them back off slightly you don’t need to worry about balancing because the cable adjuster will balance for you 👍🏻👍🏻Thanks for the comments 👍🏻👍🏻

    1. Handbrake completely off. 2. Adjust one side until you can't spin the wheen anymore. 3. Go back 8 clicks. 4. Check if wheel spins freely. 5. Repeat the process on the other side. 6. Check if handbrake lever works properly. 7. Have a beer.

I have more or less the same problem. Replaced my brake pads, cleaned everything up and it now almost seems as if it is worse than before. Tightened my pads as per the instructions here and "everywhere", and even though it seems to stop the wheels OK when the car is in the air after only 2 clicks, when parking in a steep-ish incline I have to pull the lever up to my ears to make it stop - and it only barely stops :( I am starting to think that the cables must have stretched, and with this stupid system there is no way to tighten anywhere to take up some of the slack, and I am looking at even more work and expense to have the cables renewed.

My spring tensioner appears to be seized in the "locked" position i.e. there is no bite in my handbrake at all. How do i free the tensioner? The little holding hook is sticking through the tensioner but is moving freely so the tensioner should pop forward once the hook is lined up with the hole but it isn't. Any ideas?

@@aaanton11 It's the spring thing below the lever that you pull. The hook is sticking through the hole in the plate with the small indent that you put a screwdriver in to push the spring back. I saw it and just thought "Oh that's handy, I'll just move the hook in line with the hole it came out of and it should release the srping and therefore put tension back on the handbrake cable. When i touched the hook, it moves freely so it looks like the spring tensioner is stuck. I've only had the car a few weeks and have had this problem since i got it. The garage i bought it from isn't exactly a main dealer so can't take it back.
