Jack as a teacher I can say that you are a GREAT teacher, you are very clear. I do have a problem the volume levels between your speaking voice and your guitar demos are so vast, I am constantly having to turn my volume up to hear you and then turn the volume down to not blow my speakers out when the video has music. Balance.

I found this very useful. I’ve watched a lot of these and frequently get lost , usually because the tutors approach assumes we’re all Jazz based musicians. This is far more understandable, just what I needed. Ace.

This lesson is so basic that if someone considers it "the most useable (sic) lesson of II-V-Is (they've) ever had" they must have started playing yesterday. He starts out explaining how to build chords from a scale, for fuck's sake. That's as basic as you can get. The licks he offers are about as textbook, white bread, and pedestrian as you can get. Yes, these are building blocks toward something better but this shit is hardly mind-expanding rocket science.

This is one of the pots at the end if the rainbow if not THE pot. For the learning pedestrian, I'd be curious on what the focus of practice should be. But sounds like know where all the chords sit within 1-2 frets of one another and then be able to play all the arpeggios necessary to get the tones? Your sound is awesome as always.

@@cfree5119 A good place to start is by learning the arpeggios to each chord and practice cycling between them in each of the 5 positions. Then start tying them together to make lines. Just start with straight 8th notes to keep it simple.

Very helpful thanks for the lesson! Question: if the rest of the bad doesn’t play the 251 on the 4th bar, can the guitar player still drop those jazzy lines in without sound out of place?

Interesting that you are fitting a ii-V-I of C major in a G major based progression - sounded good. I fitted a ii-V-I of the same key as the turn around (half bar of ii and half bar of V for 11th bar and I for 12th bar) and as 9th bar of ii, 9th bar of V, 11 and 12th bars of I - both sounded a good change - something different.

Idea for a video lesson part 2 - I saw you on Michael Palmisano's guitar gate, discussing a Guthrie Trappism, where if he is say playing on an Amaj triad or A7th chord, he sometimes uses the Gmaj7 arpeggio to play over that and resolve back to A7. Or the Bm7 arpeggio back to the A7. He goes a full step below and plays a major 7th or a full step above to a minor 7th and resolves back to the major triad or dominant 7th. What would be the theory behind that?

It’s also just related to the implied key with A7 being the V7 chord in Dmaj So Gmaj=IV, Bmin=vi If you’re looking for resources on how to superimpose these triads or sounds over other chords take a look at what’s called “upper structure triads/melodies”

Great stuff. I assume that the idea is that the Dm7 functions as a 5 of 1 and resolves back to G7. For whatever reason I had a hard time aligning the changes in the backing track with the chord chart. Maybe you could include playing through the progression on the next one.

I will be sure to do that. The '2-5-1' is just a chord movement but it doesn't really relate to the key of G. It's the 2 (Dmin) 5 (G7) and 1(C) of C because that is the chord we are heading to. You can add 2-5-1's to all kinds of progressions as a way to transition between chords.

So amazing!!! Love the 2-5-1 connections in blues. Yes pls make more of these!!! I started learning these from Josh Smith who uses this alot and he said he was inspired by Robben Ford in using these. Can you also use 2-5-1s to get to the IV and V? For example, to get to IV - Fmaj7, would it be Gm7, Cmaj7, Fmaj7? This happens to work bc Gm7 is the ii of Fmaj7, and Cmaj7 is the V of Fmaj7, correct? However, where I trip over is in this case Gmaj7 is in the diatonic progression of Cmaj7 and not Gm7, so how does one account for that? Maybe a lesson on that?

Thanks Allen! In this video I am doing a '2-5-1' to the 4 chord. We are playing a blues in G and we're going to the C chord. So I play Dmin7 (the 2 chord of C) G7 (5 chord of C) and then C7. That Dmin chord is not diatonic to G but that doesn't matter because we're just using it to transition to the C chord. You can add 2-5-1's in other places too, like Emin-A7-D7 would be a 2-5-1 to the V chord.
