How To Add Bluetooth To A Factory AM FM Radio

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I walkthrough how I added bluetooth to my factory 70's Delco AM FM mono transistor radio. This radio happens to be from my 1975 Chevy C10.

Mahalo for the words about different grounds and ground loops. In days gone by, when I plugged in my iPod into my car stereo, all was good. However, if the iPod needed a charge, I would plug the power lead into the cigarette lighter. That produced a low-volume whine in the audio section. Bothersome, yes. A good illustration of why it's good to avoid ground loops. You avoided all that! Well done!

Funny you say that, my wife’s Mazda makes that interference whine noise when you’re charging and plugged into aux :)

Just a heads up if you don't know, if you turn ignition backwards your accessories will come on... In older vehicles with points distributors having ignition in run position will burn points... Your truck being a 75 may have an HEI distributor...

It does have HEI so I’m good but I did not know about turning the key backyards on older vehicles!

Does this eliminate the need for the volume knob on the Amazon receiver? I'm going to do this with a Delco Am Radio. Will the Bluetooth take over the am side completely? Thanks.

Great questions. Set the volume knob on the Amazon receiver to a lower volume (like 25-50%) and then use the radio volume knob to adjust the volume still as you’d normally. The way I set it up in this video and this particular radio, the Bluetooth will play in-line with whatever switch the radio is on. So when I switch the radio to FM it will play both FM radio AND Bluetooth at the same time (not ideal). It just so happens that the AM portion on this radio didn’t work, which worked out for me. If your AM works then you’d want to tune your AM to a frequency that a station doesn’t come in on (just static) when using Bluetooth.

So I have a 78 Nova delco radio with an AM/FM radio, it has true stereo output how would I retain that? How would I swap it to use Bluetooth on the AM switch to retain FM? This is exactly what I want to accomplish on my nova’s restoration. Also you have the link for that module?

I’ve never been inside a stereo radio, but I’d imagine at the volume pot that the audio signal will likely be 2 wires, a left and right channel signal. Where as my mono radio only had 1 signal wire. Just a guess though

My radio only has AM, will I need an AM suppressor to cut out the background buzz?

I’m not sure that will work. If you wanted to eliminate AM completely and just make it Bluetooth all the time, you would probably be better off removing all 3 wires from the volume pot, and wiring the pot directly to the Bluetooth board and the speaker terminals at the back of the radio, bypassing all the internal AM radio things completely. Otherwise, if you wire in AUX instead you will get AM still but it will play AUX only when you start playing music in the AUX. You could in theory connect a bluetooth to the aux to the volume pot, but that seems like a recipe for loss of quality.

@@bluesxtHi! Great video, I was able to wire the exact same board to a 60s AM car stereo. However, being AM only, I had to remove the antenna wiring to avoid static playing in line with whatever was playing via Bluetooth. I suspect some components on the AM circuit are failing, because it starts playing music fine (same setup as you, board speakers output wired with the same resistors to the volume pot wiper) but it starts tú cut off and has a lot of distortion. I'm interested in ignoring the AM circuit altogether, but I don't know if it includes some kind of noise reduction or signal clarification circuits that might be useful... If not, should I keep the wiper wiring the same and just wire the other two pot outputs to the radio speaker terminals?

@@Nabpster94 smart about removing the antenna wiring to stop the static noise! Now as to your issue with the distortion, your radio has a built in amp, and so does the Bluetooth board, so that leads to audio being way over boosted and unwanted clipping. To remedy this, I chose to keep the volume on my phone’s Bluetooth output down to like 30-50%. And then adjust the volume of the Bluetooth board to 30-60% (whatever sounds best). With these settings you can then fine tune the volume output with the knob on the radio to adjust the volume as needed.

@@bluesxt so instead of using the resistors to change to mono like yours do you just split the the left and right ? guessing it doeant matter that there are front an rears ?

  • @bluesxt

@@bsivley81 using the resistors to convert from stereo to mono is required because of where I made that connection that is being tapped into. The audio from the Bluetooth module is stereo, and then I play that audio through the radio which is mono in this case. So stereo to mono needs to happen if your radio is mono and you’re running your connection through your radio’s amplifier

Possibly, but you’d wouldn’t be able to tap into the volume pot where I did if you wanted true stereo, unless the stereo version of this radio had a different volume pot
