    Great idea adding the box. One thing you might try for feeding and watering is Mason Jars and the little chick waterers and feeders that screw on the jars.

    great system. Simple and easy to build. If you don't have saws, most home stores will cut boards to your specs if they aren't too busy. I stopped feeding birds in my backyard because of HOSP and starlings. I may try this method. Great video, very informative. And thank you for using a tripod. Update Jeff. I caught 40 starlings in the sparrow trap in a week. THen nothing for days. I think I caught clueless juveniles. The others will not go in despite the best food! And now I have built 2 starling repeaters. All 3 traps will be out there 365 days a year.

    I think I might also prefer latches to secure the shelter to the trap instead of screws to screw/unscrew each time. I transport my sparrows to a falconer, as often as everyday. This could be great as long as I can plug the holes during transport! 😅

    The strange thing is that starlings and sparrows are native to where I live. We also have our own species of sparrow, the Italian Sparrow (Passer italiae), and that makes me feel really proud. However, I sometimes shoot down invasive parrots with bow and arrows. This because they steal nest sites to native bird species and also because they destroy cherries and almond trees.

    Of course and in their native land they are fine. Good point LaSigna. And parrots are invasive and destructive, but not in their native lands. I had to look up the Italian sparrow. Pretty little bird. You should always be proud of the native species you have. What a nice comment

    It's important to note where things are native and part of the ecosystem. Starlings and house sparrows are not evil. They just are so aggressive here in North America and our birds don't know how to compete with them.

    Yes but if we do nothing, there will be no native birds, they will push them to extreme scarcity or extinction. It is a manmade problem requiring manmade assistance to help remedy. YOu cant just allow them to multiply out of control.

    I'm in the same boat. I think winter is a difficult season to trap in. Wait until spring. Also good to with hold food from everywhere but the trap. What bait are you using?

  • @misterkota1252

    @misterkota1252

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think I have figured this out. In the last two weeks alone I have caught 40 sparrows and 27 starlings by trying some things. Here’s what I have found… 1. It seems breadcrumbs are the best bait for house sparrows. They can’t seem to resist it. 2. I remove the trap completely every other week and halt all feeding to “reset” the system. After a few days I resume feeding, and bring the trap out, but disable it with a zip tie to get the birds to trust the elevator and freely access the bait tray. When I see the birds confidently entering the elevator, I wait until after dark and remove the zip tie. 3. I found the direction the trap entrance is facing matters. Birds can’t see very well in contrasting light conditions, so the trap works best when the elevator mechanism is in shade. I found that when it is in direct sunlight the birds get spooked when they step on the elevator and it moves. In the shade, they can’t detect the movement as easily.
