How to Activate Parks on the Air Like A Boss

Ғылым және технология

I drive in with zero contacts. I drive out as the top activator at Davy Crockett National Forest. The pileup never stopped!! Using the Yaesu FT-891, Little Tarheel II Antenna, and the Lido Mount.

    Great activation. I am originally from San Angelo. I have used Various Heil Headsets (preferable on Vox) for over 30 years of mobile rag chewing, County activations, and some serious SOLP contesting from Wyoming. Hands free operation frees up both hands for faster keyboard logging, and BONUS...You won't look like one of the "Professional Driver" types (Hi Hi) that are in love with their hand mics. Recently got the POTA app and hope to start activating during my camping and ADV motorcycle travels around WY and our family property near Wolf Creek, MT. Love every video that I have seen of yours. Keep up the good work! November Seven Many Zebras Walking. Chuck in 'Ol Cheyenne. 😎

    Hey Mike what an awesome video and congratulations on making the most contacts on The Davie Crockett Park. What an awesome set up for the mobile. I really enjoy your videos when you’re doing the POTA because of the pile ups I just get a kick out of that everybody knows your Callsign. When you’re on the air on 20 m and when I’m hunting here at the QTH I get on whatever frequency you’re on unfortunately I can’t hear you but just listening to the pileup I just sit back and smile. Anyway I hope you celebrated on something good to eat being the top person on the park. Thanks for the video and have a great week. 73 WD5ENH Steve

I really need to get on 40 and 80 more and try to get some local contacts. Glad to have you riding shotgun on the activations though. I'll do that too sometimes. Hey Mike! You just did what I do almost always... run the mobile set up. Just wanted to mention something to you... West Mountain Radio's Epic Powergate is something you should look at. I have mine set up charging a 30 AH Bioenno Batter... the Powergate gets hooked directly to the car battery from the Powergate to the Battery.... with that setup, when I get to my destination, I can shut the car off and operate till the cows come home and it doesnt touch my car battery while the key is off... I've never even come close to running that 30 AH battery down, but I never have to worry about needing a jump in the middle of nowhere... Good vid...keep up the good work ...

    Nice job! I use a Scorpion on my little VW. I recently replaced my MFJ-1924 with a TuneMatic TM-1. It's been fantastic, almost completely automatic! I recently published a Scorpion video and have footage for the TuneMatic in the works. You got me thinking about "Top Activator" status. I live near K-0016 and drive through it almost every day. I'm the #2 activator with just three activations. I didn't even think about topping that list at some point. HAHA! It'll happen, though. But for the other hams that routinely operate from their car, it's not Parking Lots of the air. It's parks on the air. I understand operating from the car if the weather sucks or there are too many bugs, but when conditions are great get out of the car and find a picnic table to enjoy the beauty of nature...with your radio. :) Best 73, K9AT

    First, props for singing Davey Crockett. Second, Stanley Cup makes the best mirror decoration (Let's Go Red Wings) Third, Holllllllly cow that's a lot! I have to get my stuff to get mobile, and get activating some parks. I've got about 10 within an hour of me. I just need a battery, and a more portable antenna. I'm having trouble figuring out what size battery to get though. Running a 991a, would a 15 ah battery be enough to operate for at least an hour running 80 watts?

  • @hamradiotube

    @hamradiotube

    2 жыл бұрын

    You're not going to go to Davy Crockett Nat'l Forest and not sing Davy Crockett. That Stanley Cup has been on my mirror for about 20 years. One of my old band mates is a machinist and he made it. It's solid aluminum I think??? The 15 amp would be plenty enough for an hours use, absolutely. I'll usually use about ~5-7 amps on an outing depending on how hard its hitting. I don't know how much I used on this outing but I would guess about 10 amp hours. Depends on how much you're transmitting. Activations like these are pretty much a 50% duty cycle.

    What do you have the RF gain set to on the 891 to get any kind of reliable S-reading? My gain is usually all the way up, so the needle doesn't generally move for me.

  • @sockeatinggolden8316

    Yaesu says the “all the way up” setting is the right one. When you pull it back that change in S-units is compensating for the reduction. The 991A does the same thing. BTW…if the RF seems too high you can use IPO or ATT or even mess with the AGC settings. The 891 seems very sensitive to me.

  • @hamradiotube

    @hamradiotube

    RF Gain is all the way up. It will decrease the signal level otherwise. Ain't nobody got time for that. If yours is all the way up (clockwise) and your needle isn't moving I would wonder if something is wrong with it.

    I got a big tarheel amd cant get it to hold tune. Im not sure if propogation is affecting my swr. I would think that it would not, as the swr depends on the impedance of the radiating element. But Figured id give you a shot amd see if youve had any similar experience. My antennea is mounted on a truck, and it does see alot of abuse(live in rural area). It has held up extroardinarily well. It gets the snot beat out of her and she keeps tickin.

  • @hamradiotube

    @hamradiotube

    Propagation has nothing to do with SWR. How well do you have it connected to the truck? Is any of the ground side connected to the body at all? I don't have anything other than the mount digging into the metal of the trunk. Never had a problem holding tune. Sure I could ground it better and get a wider bandwidth but I've not had any issues so far. Been on for about 3 years now I think.

For the longest time I got on the air without spotting and had the same results by just calling CQ. Then, as the channel started to grow, people kept asking if I would please spot myself. They wanted to know when I was on the air so they could work me. Sounds silly, I know. But, since then I have made more of an effort to spot myself.
