How to wake up & activate brand new TPMS sensor.
If you bought a brand new sensor and it appears to be dead - you try to scan it with TPMS tool and nothing happens, chances are it is just needs to be activated, or woken up. These sensors come dormant from the factory to prevent batteries from discharging while sensor are still sitting on the shelf in the store or warehouse.
To activate brand new sensors, install them onto the wheels, inflate the tires to normal operational pressure, and then try to trigger them with the TPMS tool. It should work most of the times. If it still doesn’t, try releasing the pressure continuously for at least 3 seconds while triggering the sensor. This should wake up the sensor and you should be able to register it now.

I have a set of wheels that I had put aside for six months after installing the TPMSs in the wheels, car didn’t recognize the sensors when I reinstalled the wheels, your tip on waking them up by letting the air out for 3s seems to have woke them up and the car now sees the sensors. Thanks! Saved me a trip to the tire shop.

This worked, thank you! I had only done TPMS relearns four or five times before, and I had never ran into a sensor that wouldn't trigger with my Autel MX808S-TS (other than known bad ones). I had four new OEM Ford TPMS-35 sensors installed today and one wouldn't trigger when I tried a relearn. I tried three times and was convinced that I had a defective one. After watching your video I tried to trigger it while releasing air from the valve stem, and after about four or five seconds it still wouldn't trigger. I stopped releasing air and was ready to give up on it and heard that beautiful "beep beep beep beep" and looked down to see that the sensor had been recognized! I was literally in the process of standing back up when it triggered.

Suzuki Vitara S. I did manual tpms reset procedure and programmed all id's (automatic re-learning didn't work). I hope successfully as at the end tpms led was solid for approx. 5 sec which means success as far as I found. However I have another problem. After turning ignition on and reaching approx. 30 km/h, tpms led is blinking showing with this blings digits 1,2,3 and next it blinks for approx. 10 km-12 according to sequence "long off, short off". After approx. 10-12 sec it blinks agains digits 3, 2, 1 (in reverse order, each digit is being blinked few times) and then I got the correct pressure values displayed when I enter tpms menu (earlier there is nothing). Do you perhaps know what this 1,2,3 - long off/short off - 3, 2, 1 sequence means? Is that some kind of calibration? And the problem is that this "calibration" procedure is repeated every time after turning off and on the engine (only if the engine is off for short time the system doesn't run again calibration). How to "remove" this "calibration"? There are not DTCs codes visible for typical diagnostic software.

Instruction Tag on DENSO 550-0103 aka Pacific PMV-C11A reads: REGISTRATION BY PRESSURE During the Trigger Step release air pressure from the wheel assembly (for about three seconds), Immediately followed by tool trigger initiation. The ID data should then appear on the tool. Continue to follow the procedures the tool requires to finish sensor registration process.

Nice! But the problem here is you do not know until is too late if the sensor will trigger or not! If it does not activate, you will have to disassemble the wheel again to change the valve and sensor. This is what happened to me :( The ideal is to be able to activate the new sensor before installing it. Here is the big problem with TPMS tools. They activate the generic sensors of their brands very easily, but it is much more complicated with the OEM ones

Yeah, I am seeing 50/50 success rate. I wonder if this has something to do with overheating. Recently I was testing new portable air compressor for review video. All of my sensors were fine. I fully deflated one tire, and pumped it back up. Immediately after that I got blinking TPMS warning light. The sensor is dead now and won't respond to TPMS tool. I suspect rapid deflating/inflating back to back could have generated a lot of heat and damaged the sensor. My compressor takes 5-6 minutes per tire. Many be that's too long for sensors. Tire shops have heavy duty compressors and those probably need less than a minute per tire.

Man, I have to buy a specific stupid tool just for tire pressure sensing? foolish tech , I'd rather go back to having cars just not equipped with this, it's not like it's hard to tell when you are low by air in a tire for crying out loud. The tire dash light doesn't bother me enough, I'll just leave it, f that. Or take apart the dash and get rid of the led.

I mostly agree with you and get what you're saying, but a TPMS sensor can give you an extra few seconds or minutes to pull off (or at least reduce speed) before a catastrophic blowout happens. But yes, it should be a habit to regularly check your pressure. I do once a week, especially during temperature changes.

Some Brand sensors won't work at all with your programming tool, assuming you have the MaxiTPMS Programming tool. Because some brands just want to make people sell their own brand's tool, they make it so that only their programming tools are compatible with their sensors. It is perfectly fine to program sensors before installation. Actually, that is my preferred method, but some sensors just won't trigger unless put in the tire, hence the video. I don't know if the dormant sensor will trigger that way. Hope the person who made the video answers.
