Hinge but at the end you can push up with your legs as you spin a qtr turn and you ll get an extra foot for propelling and if your have the paddle enter the water a qtr turn will keep you straight Is this an old video ? I need to start racing again

Hi Ethan. I just bought my first paddle board and I've subscribed and I am really learning a lot from your videos. I'm a complete beginner. Thanks for the detailed breakdown of the stroke. Are we supposed to alternate sides too? Or are we supposed to just paddle on one side? Thanks!

  • @ethanhuffsup

Yes, you will need to alternate sides as well. The more efficient you get at your paddle stroke the more strokes you’ll be able to take on one side before switching to the other. But, starting off simply work on taking 3-5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other side and do the same.

Hi Ethan, was this video made after Michael Booth reviewed your stroke?

This video was made before and I have adjusted a few things to my personal stroke since this video. The biggest one being my top arm has more bend in it now bringing it closer to my head for increased reach and power. The overall concepts in this video still apply though for creating a good stroke for beginners to intermediate paddlers.

@@ethanhuffsup Thanks! I'd love to see a quick video of your adjusted stroke. A good visual is really helpful for newbies like me.

Hi there.. i have been paddling a while, but as i am 5'2" and 110 lbs, I find it's hard to reach and put the blade far forward like you suggest in the water as i almost fall over.. Does that make sense?

  • @ethanhuffsup

When it comes to maximizing your reach you will feel like you will start to fall forward especially when first starting out. You basically want to be at the point where it feels like you’re going to fall forward but burry your blade in the water at that exact moment to leverage your body into the paddle. But, you still want to make sure your weight is evenly distributed on your feet and you’re not shifting to the balls of your feet. It’s a lot to learn at first but just work on gradually extending your reach till you find that sweet spot.

@ethanhuffsup Thanks for the response! I'll keep trying it. Right now, I discovered my board has leaks and i'm trying to get it back on the mend. Greetings from Huatulco, Mexico!
