    Adaptability Interpersonal skills - an active listener(take in what they’re saying and recite it back) Communicate appropriately - use verbal and nonverbal communication Good teamwork- colleagues, bosses, and patients Detail oriented - write down what you need to do and prioritize different task The ability to be eager to learn and grow Be confident and have a lot of clarity into why you want to go into physical therapy -( and talk about a niche that you’re interested in -pelvic floor and stuff along those lines) Interview questions: What personal skills or traits would make you a good member of our 10:31 team? Think of a way how my strengths can be connected to team work with your colleague and patients( what can be brought to the table?) How do you talk to someone who is not working well with you? When you have a conflict, if a patient or colleague isn’t working with you, how are you going to respond to this. Conflict resolution skills - I will approach this with an opened mind, and come to a conclusions where both of us are met, and open the opportunity on what I can do to improve to prevent conflicts How do you motivate patients? I would motivate a person by reassuring them that I am going to do it with them and if they feel any pain while doing the activity, let me know so that we can stop , and I can address it. Additionally, I would acknowledge that the fact that they showed up to the session is a step in the right direction and we can go through the prescribed exercises - there are modifications if this exercise may be to challenging *we’re going to get this done, then take a little break, and right after we’re going to add a little bit of challenge so that we can meet your goal( and get to here) - when I get their consent that means we’re going to stick to it Why do you want to work/volunteer here? They want to get to know you and what you want for your future, and what are your aspirations Where do you see yourself in a few years? Ask a question to the interviewer? What is the pay? How many hours am I able to work while going to school? LOR(letters of recommendation) How do you measure success in a PT tech

    So I made an outline of this video and was very excited for my phone interview. Just to introduce myself. And ask about taking my Psychomotor exam. But I was not able to get a word in. The person not only talked over me but also yelled at me, wouldn't let me speak when asked a question then told me they would call me back only to insult me and tell me my education was a waste of time and to apply somewhere else. Honestly, I would not want to work for someone that couldn't listen and no impulse control. While it was disappointing to be strung along and treated so unprofessionally, Im glad I understand that who you work for is really important. That person above you can make or break your career. And there are many place to apply to.

    Usually patients dont want to put in the effort to get better, since most don’t maintain their health. The only way that might work is finding out if there were specific tasks where they appreciated having muscle usage. Regarding fixing a conflict. I guess we would have to figure out what is going on. I don’t really care if I’m not supposed to have authority, or whatever, if I am automatically in trouble because I’m not a manager, that might not be the job for me.

    I'm in your Facebook group and I remember last week you gave a little summary on how to get PT hours during COVID. Looking forward to seeing a full video on it! I'm still having a tough time trying to find a clinic that will allow me to volunteer or a clinic that's hiring PT aides but I'm not giving up! Thanks for the video bro Also quick question, usually I would go in person to apply for a job because I feel that gives the best impression. I feel like it would be kind of disrespectful and not right to do that now because of COVID even though I would have a face mask on. I've been calling a few clinics but I feel like I can't show my true personality and keep thinking if I could just go in person I know I would land the job or make a much better impression. Any advice on how I can tackle this?

    Im SO GLAD you commented this! Ill actually be posting that video this Monday! Stoked to share with you and answer all your concerns and questions on there. Literally will have all your questions answerd haha but to comment on your concern with mask: I do not think its disrepectful at all to visit. There is nothing harmful/disrepectful in visiting with the proper PPE (typically a mask). Show your face and ask to speak with the owner and ask him/her some questions. And lets just say they don't feel comfortable with you visiting; the worst case will be that you will be asked to leave. But no harm in that. At least you showed face and were able to name drop yourself to the clinic. That in itself is valuable!

    Hey Justin , found your channel recently and gained alot of info about the pt schools in the US. I'm an international student pursuing my final year of Bachelor's of physiotherapy at the moment . Been planning to do my masters in the US but since it's only DPT now , I have heard there's a transitional DPT or post professional DPT for people with a BPT degree .Would be really helpful if you could make a video about Tdpt , universities which offer this program and mostly which are on campus as I have found most of them to be distance learning programs . Thank you 😊

    @@drjustinleedpt Hey, so as we know DPT is an entry level program eligible for students with a bachelor's degree and not particularly bachelor's in physical therapy , and by the end of 3 years of DPT you would have a doctor of physical therapy degree as in you don't necessarily have to pursue a higher /master's degree (MPT) ( phd is a diff topic) but incase of other countries as in India, we have bachelor's of physical therapy of 4 years and a master's of 2 years . But since I want to pursue my masters in the US , the rate of masters programs have decreased and DPT is now widely known and accepted . The tdpt - transitional DPT (can be completed in one and half or 2 years depending on the University) is for students who have already done their Bachelor's of PT and want to advance their degree to the higher level (DPT),this program is offered mostly to the physical therapist who have an US license to practice but very few universities also offer international students who do not have an US license and only have their home license of practice . So, it would be helpful if you maybe know anyone who can give info about such Universities . Sorry for the long rant 😅 it's totally okay if you do not have any info about this and thank you for replying 🤗

Do you think that’s normal, some people look at me sideways when I say it but I feel like I would be more happy and fulfilled going down that path and do you have any advice?

    I did not like working as an aide. I worked at an outpatient clinic, lead PT treated all the aides like crap(she wasn't much nicer to the clients either). We were also constantly expected to take 3-5 clients through all of their prescribed exercises all at the same time, in different areas of the clinic, who were working with different PTs. While doing that, we would get fussed at for looking at their chart because and I quote, "You should be able to memorize all of their exercises, if you cant do that much you're just stupid". That doesn't seem like much but when each client has around 8-25 exercises with different weights or resistances for the equipment for those exercises, and different rep ranges, it adds up. There was sooo much more too. It was by far the worst work experience I have ever had and the reason I decided not to go into physical therapy. I loved the patients but now I work in fitness and preventative health and love what i do. I'm sure not every place is like that and I have much respect for everyone who works in PT, but my aide experience ruined it for me.

    Hey quick question is there different types of kinesiology majors? I am applying to CSU’s right now and there is a bunch. I do not know which ones to select because I am looking to become a PT.

  • @drjustinleedpt

    @drjustinleedpt

    It really does NOT matter what "emphasis" you choose in kinesiology, yet alone your major. However, having a kinesiology/exercise science will 100% provide much more value to you than an unrelated major. What are the types of kinesiology majors? Maybe I could help you! I’m about to graduate with a health science degree with a concentration in pre-occupational therapy, did you work under OTs too or see any aides for OTs or can they count as the same when it comes to getting the experience? At this point I have no shadow hours but see a lot of rehab aide positions available in my home city.

  • @drjustinleedpt

    @drjustinleedpt

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's a great question. To my knowledge, you MUST shadow a PT in order for PT observation hours to count. Since a PT has to sign off on observed hours, it has to be at a PT setting by default. I would recommend getting started with those rehab aide positions for PT.

  • @drjustinleedpt

    @drjustinleedpt

    Unfortunately that is the way the culture is in physical therapy. I had the same curiosity when I was working as a PT aide. It was always a complaint that we got paid minimum wage and super overworked with every minute during the shift. And when you compare salaries to other positions, it makes you feel super crappy about yourself. However, it is the way the culture is and nobody is willing to pay more because if he can offer little salary and if student are still willing to accept the offer.. than why increase wages?

    @@drjustinleedpt yeah, I worked as a PT aide for five years and my salary did not budge the only reason why I went up a little bit was because they could not find anybody to work along with me everybody kept on quitting. I think also a lot of people don’t really know much about the position so there isn’t a lot of Advocacy to get them paid more money like there are for retail or fast food workers if I could do it over I wouldn’t have done it I did it because I thought it would help me get into the school but for me it didn’t help so I gave up on it. I hope one day things will change.

    @@rara1800 I am so sorry to hear that gaining more observation hours was not enough leverage for your acceptance.. if you still can muster up the courage to try to apply again, I know with the proper guidance you CAN get admitted. If you are willing, I can help you! I totally agree with you that aides get paid sh*t and super overworked. I always disagreed with how much aides get taken advantage of. I’ve even seen places utilize them for front desk and admin work too, which is ridiculous. It is unfortunate because that is the standard of salary and honestly it would take an army to change that. & sadly, I think aides are just there to gain experience and move on so there isn’t really a push for increased salary. I always thought about it this way: the priority is it get observation hours for the pt application and gain experience - and most students volunteer and do this for free. So if I could get SOME money from this, that’s all extra. You see the mindset?

    She may possibly ask you to perform an exercise that is common in the clinic. Maybe a squat, bridge, sit to stand, stretch, etc. she is likely looking to see if you can demonstrate it right proper form and to give clear instructions.
