How to Acclimate Clean Up Crew Invertebrates To Your Reef Aquarium

Our topic today came from a viewer who requested we talk about acclimating invertebrates. It could not have came at a better time because I recently added a slew of clean up crew inverts into our tanks here at the office.
Invertebrates is a broad term that refers to a wide range of marine life and it means these animals lack a spinal column. This covers many of the more unique organisms we keep in reef tanks like corals, crabs, shrimp, snails, clams, mollusks, sponges, and anemones.
Invertebrate acclimation is critical because they are very sensitive to changes in salinity, far more than a fish. For this reason, you really want to drip acclimate your new invertebrates in order to slowly adjust the animals to match your aquariums salinity. Simply floating the bag inside your tank will only equalize the temperature and does nothing in the way of matching water chemistry beyond this.

how about quarantining conches? What do people do? I have an established FOWLR with snails 125 gallon tank. I don't want my fish to get sick due to a couple conches.

How would you add a serpent star or sand sifting star into an aquarium without putting the acclimation water into the tank, because constantly I see sources saying that oxygen will hurt the stars

Crazy question.... Why can't you measure the temp and SG prior to acclimating and if it matches or is real close why go thru the hour + long process?

Hi, I'm due to add 2 hermits and 2 snails as I have just finished cycling my new tank! Yay, so my question is thr water you have removed from your tank whilst acclimatising your new inverts, can you just top it up with RO water? Thanks

You will want to replace the water drained from your display during acclimation with saltwater as just adding RO will lower your salinity.

Do you recommend acclimating all inverts even though there could be a risk of ammonia poisoning?

  • @BulkReefSupply

If you notice a strong ammonia smell coming from a bag of recently shipped or transported inverts, we find it best to avoid acclimating them.

Great info on invert acclimation but the website you are highlighting has ripped me off and if you look at his FB page he has ripped off several others. Do not order from them. BRS needs to take this video down and not push new reefers to a fraudulant website. FYI
