How-to: A cheap fueling system for rc airplanes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm a big fan of using 1 gallon cans to store my gas and glow rc airplane fuel. In this How-to I'll walk you through creating your own cost effective fueling system using a DuBro Kwik Fill Fitting, a hand pump, and a 1 gallon Midwest gas can from Autozone.

    Thanks for the video and the info that it provided!! I have designed and 3D printed up an adapter disk to hold the Kwik fill fitting and too seal the top.

    Thanks for the video! I can't work out why everyone is so focused in putting these fittings in the lid when the can itself is made of thick plastic though. I just used a step-drill to put a hole in the flat shoulder section next to the lid. This works much better as far as keeping the install neat and not twisting up your fuel lines when you're refilling the can. Also, a quick hit with a heat gun (or hairdryer) softens the tygon tubing enough for it to slip right on to the fittings. Once I have eveything laid out it takes less than a minute.

    Great video. My only observation is why do you need a clunk to go right to the bottom of the fuel can . If you had it half an inch short you would of course not be able to use every drop of fuel but you would avoid picking up any sediment that might would have sunk to the bottom of the tank. I do this with a diesel heater in my sons shed and it works a treat using recovered fuel from scrapped cars , trucks and so on.

    Solid point. I do have a fuel filter in my fuel line in each airplane - that gets cleaned on the regular. So while I don't filter from the can, I do ensure each engine has a filter installed on the main line to the carb.

    CENTER HOLE DRiLLING-When drilling the center hole for the DuBro Kwik Fill Fuel Can Fitting, 1) Before cutting the circle out of the scrap basswood, drill a smaller pilot hole (with a variable speed drill). Gradually increase the size of the drill bit (maybe 3-4 sizes), until you reach the desired diameter hole. Read Brobolio's below comment about transporting gas jug with the Dubro Kwik Fill. Makes sense. Paul the carpenter

    Those 3/32 fuel lines split as you were putting them on the plastic fittings. Perhaps you should go up a size?

    After the fact I realized that I just needed to heat up the tubing with my heat gun and soften the tube. It then fit like a glove with no split! Yeah, I think I'll try some larger tubing next time. Solid advice.

    Why not use the red cap that comes with the jug, grind down vertical lip flush with cap and drill that cap in lieu of wood.

  • @theskyllama

    @theskyllama

    Good question. The lid on this jug was flimsy, odd shaped, and I couldn't get a good flat surface underneath to make a good seal.

    That was actually me. I split it to get a fit started. Wasn't until after that someone said, "Yo, heat that tube up hot before you squeeze it on. It'll make it easier." 😖

    @@brianscutt6298 I use a 1 quart plastic (poly) bottle , 2 fuel lines and a squeeze pump from a Sphygmomanometer. Two hoses go in thru the bottle top (nice squeeze fit to seal). One hose has clunk on end and goes to the bottom of the bottle the other end has your refill / filter probe. The other hose goes just thru the bottle top so its always above the fluid and the other end has the squeeze bulb. Connect your refill probe to your aircraft and start pressurising the bottle with the bulb. When not in use, remove the bulb and attach a pneumatic system exhaust silencer so the bottle is always vented and won't pressurise in storage. The silencer also acts as a filter to keep crap out as well. I've been using this system for 6 years. I always carry 2 full bottles. At the end of a days flying, I siphon the fuel out of my aircraft back into the bottles.

    Pro tip: Attach the pump to the tank handle with zip ties. OR...Hot glue it to the side of the tank. Your welcome. :)

  • @Brobolio
    @Brobolio3 жыл бұрын

    Really unsafe. You need to install locking fuel fittings. Those dubro fuel fitting are not meant for long time storage or safe transport of the jug. Maybe using a complete non modified cap for transport or storage might be a better idea.

    Good insight Brobolio👍🏽I've been using the same glow fuel tank for 10 years and haven't had any issues. Maybe it's luck? 🤔 However, I transport my tank using a rolling Husky tool case... so it's really protected. Thanks for the feedback 😁

    Not sure that technical is the right term, just complicating what should have been a simple installation, blocks of wood, epoxy, neoprene washers et al?
