I have to admit, printing resin is not hard with modern machines. I was put off was about 2 years as I thought it would be way too hard and messy. I finally decided to give it a go last week with Phrozen water washable resin. I've had no problems at all. If you follow the instructions clearly and spend the first day making sure the exposure is strong but not too strong, you can get some amazing stuff that I couldn't believe. It's a little messy but I purchased some cheap plastic mats and cheap towels and it's kept everything clean. Then I dry it all in the sun after. I personally suggest getting IPA just for cleaning the printer not the prints. But I'd also suggest just leaving the resin in the printer for a few days until you have enough models then clean out your vat and printer and put it all away for a few weeks until the models you printed are painted. This way you are not exposed to resin 24/7 and don't over print. The hobby also lasts a lot longer this way.

Don’t forget about UVTools as a file validator. I know that UVTools will work with several different files types. It’s probably a little less user friendly, and it’s not as pretty. But you can edit your prints at the pixel level and there is a whole suite of exposure diagnostic tools built right in.

best part is that you can actually take this hobby several steps further. You can do stuff like digital kitbashing or even remixing your own models! The only limit is what you want to get out of it. I personally print 2-3 models that I really like and use one for practice, one for table top and one for display

3D printing is just an amazing fun tool and part of the hobby, like buying expensive brushes or an expensive gaming table. It doesn't have to be a cloning machine. Honestly, even if you're a hardcore GW supporter, you can use 3d printing to print practice models to paint or bases for your minis. Hell. I don't want a SM army but ive been tempted to print a few off to just practice my painting skills and test new colour schemes. At 0.1$ a model, could you blame me? I've also used it to keep parts of the hobby alive. GW and FW models that are no longer sold but are in Legends is just begging for a few proxies.
@battlebrothersam
Жыл бұрын
I might have to start doing that
I absolutely love that more creators are spreading the good word about 3D printing. I adopted 3D printing 4~ years ago and have heard pretty much every claim under the sun about 3D printing being "expensive", "difficult" and "inferior"; which have all been debunked to the degree where detractors just pretend everybody is going to get sued into oblivion for 3D printing miniatures at this point. When I started 3D printing before the big price hike I rationalized that for the price of a starter army box I could just buy a 3D printer, and "one box" of GW marines is basically a whole vat of resin now. While I cannot legally say that everybody should 3D print models for a game that rhymes with "bedslammer", I do need to point out that there's a myriad of living and dead miniatures games that you can play with more or less the original style of model the developer intended. Through my 3D printing hobby I was able to play Epic, Firestorm Armada, and Warmaster.

Great video! I recently got myself a Photon Mono 4k and I've been watching a bunch of stuff about printing, and your vids are really good! The DIY curing box seems really nifty, gonna have to try it out. I also appreciate the nice sepia tone to the whole video, good for the eyes. Keep it up!
Good video. Here are some additional points I would like to add: 1. Sometimes when importing a model into Lychee it will give you a warning that the model is broken somehow and needs repair. The easiest and best way to repair and STL is to use 3D builder which is a free Microsoft tool. Just import your STL into there, repair it and save it as a new file. 2. Photon file validator is basically useless at this point, because Lychee is already very good at identifying islands and add supports to them. Also it's very easy to find islands yourself by just using the slider to the right in Lychee and check layer by layer. 3. Water washable resin sounds really good in theory, but it really doesn't make the cleaning process that much easier and the results are often worse. The detail is basically the same, but the models because much more brittle, and they are more likely to crack open. I really tried to give WW resin a chance but I gave up after too many failures, went back to regular resin and never had any problems again. 4. The Wash and cure station is not necessary at all. Easiest way to clean is to just bathe your models in IPA or denautered alcohol for a while. Make sure you filter your IPA often, a regular coffee filter does the trick.
these are just what I've been looking for! It's so helpful thanks ^^
I’m thinking about getting into 3D printing. Not even just for GW stuff so many cool things now just makes me want to get into it more and more.
For your resin I recommend getting a baby formula stirrer, quick, easy and clean way to get your resin mixed before pouring.
I went nuts printing countless Epic Scale Warhammer 40 Vehicles as well as some Battlefleet Gothic Ships. I also printed an Epic Scale Ork Gargant, which I had do to in 4 separate prints.
For gluing the parts together, have you tried using resin and a UV light? That's been my preferred method these days

Got a link for the files? Would. Live to do my first space marine and I'm having difficulty finding a good one, love the one in the video.
Jumping on the 3D train and this is by far one of the best videos for beginners. One question, If the free file i downloaded comes with a base already attached to it as one piece how would you go about the supporting part of this video? is there a way to filter out the base on it's own. I'm finding it hard to work around it during the Photon File validator part. Also how does the validator part work if the file i get is supported already but i just want to be sure and validate. the different view filters to get supports as lines doesnt work for supports that come with the downloaded file. Hope that make sense! thanks again!
curious as how you do the scale for scale appropriate? do you have z:110?
I used to use photon file validator with Chitu box. I dont remember having to save it as a photon file first I just exported it and it worked fine.

Mind you its been 18 months ... I dont bother any more and just yse the detailed island finder on lychee.
What did you keep your printer on?
Overcuring isn't really a thing. there have been a bunch of experiments done. Your resin is brittle. It might not be quite as brittle after your curing because you didn't fully cure it. It will harden over time anyway, and become just as brittle again. If you want something less brittle, use slightly flexible resin like Siraya Tech, Sunlu or other ABS-like offers. Blast the mini with UV light until it is NOT tacky anymore. Also please read up on PPE and how to dispose of your resin, IPA and/or Water. DO NOT POUR IT DOWN THE SINK.
thanks Sam, Now I'm inspired to create a small regiment of Adeptus Astartes Ultra! For the Emperor!

12 GW Termagaunts is $35 I can literally print them 20 at a time on my Flashforge Foto 9.25" 6K printer and it takes 2 hours. Upside with proper supports very little cleanup and no assembly.

Extra tip on getting the prints dry. After I remove the prints with hot water, I have another small container or IPA. IPA evaporates very fast so if you dunk them in IPA give them a quick shake and let them dry it only takes 15 mins to dry if that.

Honestly, I was kind of like "3D printing is a cheap knock off" thinking the models would look okay but clearly printed (hard to tell on camera). I finally decided to buy one this month as I wanted the printer for smaller dnd grunts. However, and I don't know if this is just because of the newer 4k quality, but I was blown away with how amazing my prints were. You couldn't see any visible line and they looked perfect, better than FW models I had gotten. I've looked back and alot of older news sites and posts about 40k 3d printing always showed terrible knock off models... I'm unsure now if this was a propaganda campaign or something. I still do think that some models you find online just look crap printed, but quality professional models look indistinguishable from store bought minis. I've been playing warhammer since 4th edition. Guess what? 2000 points in just about any army has ALWAYS been around $700, give or take, depending on what units you use. There are some examples where the cost is way higher than it should be for the unit like the ork mech gun platforms, which were $35 a pop but were like Imp Guard gun platforms rules wise, could do 6 in a unit, making them the worst points per dollar in 7th edition.
You know at first i kinda wanted to buy - purely for painting and show offs - a titan or two from GW cause they look reeeeeally cool Then i take a look at the pricing and see that i can buy a VERY good 3d printer, all the colors FROM GW, a couple titan files online - all with very good quality, all the other things needed for 3d printing, and see that if i bought that instead of O N E titan i still have over 50 bucks to spare Well done GW, lets see how this works out Edit: buying the 3d printer everyone i saw recommend as well as the previously mentioned things will cost me more than 1 titan, however its still a couple hundred cheaper than 2, or even 3, lmao

Technically allowed by GWs own rules, as long as you modelled them yourself/don't sell or distribute them. But either way, I vote to stick it to GW in general.
