    But sometimes the name and descriptive title are one and the same. It's not often the case in english, but for other languages like chinese, the names are often made to be descriptive of what the parents hope the child would be like.

    +RagnarTheRed My name is literally Jerry funnily enough. If someone stole my first name and I had to go around by my family name alone i'd be pissed. The family name Armstrong for instance was started as a semi title/clan name. In olden times in parts of Europe you'd just go by your name like John or Thor. That was it. So a guy named John might have earned the title Armstrong (John Armstrong) or used the family name Jackson, son of Jack based on the patriarch of their family. Your reasonings are as weak as the writers trying to justify this stupid bullshit.

  • @0Fate8Bound0

    This is just crying over semantics. The writers have simply merged the iconography and connotations of the name Thor and God of thunder together. Instead of saying, she has taken up the mantle of god of thunder they simply refer to it as Thor because the name carries a stronger depiction of what she becomes than God of thunder does. Marval has introduced several divine pantheons from Greek to Japanese, many of which have their own gods of thunder so the term is a far vaguer indication of who Jane becomes. It''s the same reason that the Thor Corps is named that and not The gods of thunder, it better informs the reader of the mentality, powers and trajectory of the character(s) taking up the name.simple.

    In Marvel Comics, Gaea has a presence in every pantheon under various names. Odin got to know her in bed while she was called Jord, but all of the various Earth Mother figures in all of the pantheons are still the same entity, and she was one of the Elder Gods --the first beings to emerge from the darkness. So skip the mythology lesson, Marvel has already explained its various collections of god figures on multiple occasions.

  • @Geneforson

    +Alex Ramos +Mr. Spock Really good points from both you guys. Heh... its funny; in a way... Thor NOT being full of him self was his over arching goal for a long time in his character's run (way back) AND its the very thing that ends up not making him worthy. So I wonder if it will turn into a.... lets say math/algebra equation... that once you truly see the equation (really comprehend it) from BOTH sides ~ you will finally TRULY be able to be both things (worthy and humble). Just like an equation... if you read ONE way, you are only seeing half of it. If you read it the other way the opposite direction, again... you only see half. But when you see it BOTH WAYS ~ ie you just see the equation in its entire and not in a linear fashion; you TRULY will comprehend what the equation truly is. So it may seem simple on its surface, but can prove very difficult on deeper contemplation . Kinda like the riddle/dilemma of "trying to look left, AND right at the dame time". So yeah, CRAZY random metaphor... i know. But I think it is one way that Thor will eventually (maybe WAY down the road) will be able to become worthy to wield his hammer again. While ALSO maintain his humility.

    Emmmm.... I think it's tge fear of thor being evil, and seing himself as part of the "selfish gods" that makes mjolnir doubting thor, he is not sure of himself and he sees himself as kinda bad. Kinda right to say that. Thor needs to understand that he can be a "god" and a good man, that he can actually be good and a ruller. And he doubts that point in his words.

    My issue with the direction Thor went is that Thor is supposed to be his name and NOT a title. Odinson is a title meaning " son of Odin" such as old English titles like " John of York". Since the comic character Thor is based on a Nordic god, it infuriates me that he completely strayed so far from the source material. That alone turned me off to the new Female Thor.

    Thor is both a name and title. The name of Thor Odinson is well... Thor. However, it depends on how he lives up to that name. That is when Thor becomes a title. If he does not live up to his name and essentially succeed Odin, then Thor does not deserve the title of "Thor" or "God of Thunder." He may still go by the name of Thor when cast out of Asgard or when he loses his hammer, but at that point he no longer holds or deserves the title of Thor. The Title of Thor correlates with "Odinson." If he disgraces himself or acts out of line to a certain point, he no longer is deserving of being called Thor Odinson. Thus he loses the title of Thor Odinson, and is only by the name of Thor. This is all essentially what his name means. His name is Thor Odinson, but if he does something to lose the title of God of Thunder; then he loses his worthiness of the title "Thor." Thus, due to his name both being a Name and a Title, it is able to be passed down when another person takes up the earthly mantle of the hero. There is also the fact he is called Thor, and if Jane Foster or someone else takes up the mantle then they either go by Thor or go by something else that strays them farther from actually being a successor.

    I'm kinda shakey on this "title" thing. Yes, the superhero titles are titles and other characters have taken up the mantle of certain heroes, but the titles are intrinsically attached to the characters. Steve Rogers is Captain America. Has there been other Captain America's? Yes. But he is still Captain America. With Thor its even more appropriate because that is his actual name. It's not a mantle or an identity, it's the name of a god. Odinson may be stripped of his ability to lift Mjolnir, but that doesn't mean he is no longer "Thor." It's his name. He has been stripped of his power, not his name. The line of text on the hammer specifically states who ever is worthy will attain "the power of Thor" which says nothing about gaining or loosing a title or name.

By saying Jane Foster is Thor is a statement that is false because just because you wield Mjölnir doesn’t make you Thor. Captain America once wielded the hammer but did that make him Thor no.

    It's because Odin put the enchantment on the hammer. I doubt anyone intended this to happen when it was first written, but saying that anyone worthy of wielding the hammer "shall possess the power of Thor" means that Thor's powers have been separated from himself the instant Odin made that spell and could be given to whoever wields Mjolnir. Considering that Thor's exceptional power comes from his increased connection to the Odinforce due to his bloodline and Odin has full control of that force, it makes perfect sense that Odin could strip him of all but his baseline Asgardian power(which is why he's not really any stronger than a normal Asgardian soldier without it), connect it to the hammer, and imbue whoever wields the hammer with that power. I disagree with the idea that Thor literally doesn't possess the name "Thor" after he becomes unworthy, because that's just flat out his given name, but due to his pride as a warrior, I could see how he could psychologically want to punish himself by no longer considering himself "Thor" after everything he based his identify on was stripped away. It's rather horrible that his girlfriend actually went along with this self-punishment and decided to enable his identity crisis by calling herself "Thor", but what can you do?

    Sure if the comic was published in say Norway where he's part of the local mythology but here in the secular USA we can mess with him because he's just a comic book character, kinda like Heracles. So, not based on a real cultural American icon or even a Scandinavian one, he's a a made up comic character who is loosely based on a piece of mythology.

    Best Thor run ever? Are you serious? Jason Aaron did amazing job with God Butcher, God Bomb, Last Days of Midgard, etc. but he completely dropped the ball with thus Jane Foster and Unworthy debacle. Having Thor become unworthy or Jane lifting Mjolnir isnt bad in itself, but the story around it is absolutly awful. Why turn his name into a mantle? Why have Jane steal his identity instead of being her own character the way Beta-Ray-Bill did? Why make Odin unable to control his own fuckin spell? Why focus on what Thor cannot do without his hammer instead of showcasing he is the God of Thunder no matter what tools he uses? Why make him a dumb hammer-junky? All of those plot holes are just bone headed decisions in my opinion... Having the whisper circle back to the plot line of Gorr's ideology is pretty clever and it would have worked in a better crafted story, but having pop up in the middle of nowhere like that when it hasnt came up anywhere since ANAD just falls flat. The best runs of Thor is and will always remain Walt Simonson.

  • @gabbonoo

    Why turn it into a mantle? because it distances the powers from the identities. Why not have jane gain different powers? because the less expected conflict between the familiar is generally more intrinsic to immersion. Why cant he control "his" spell? The nature of spells is a primal and sentient catalyst of momentary whims, not identities. Why make him an Asgardian man instead of the hero-god of thunder? Because weakness is a reason to change, to grow or perish. Why make him obsessive and fearful? Because character flaws can be a better villain than antagonists.

  • @bigbowss9817

    @bigbowss9817

    6 жыл бұрын

    Elliott Bohringer 1) Thor is a name, not a power. It is litterally a norse male name still used in Icelandic and Scandinavian countries, there is nothing to distinguish. His title/mantle is God of Thunder, so taking his place in Asgardian pantheon is one thing, stealing his name and identity is another. 2) I never taked about her having different powers, I said becoming a character of her own. Beta-Ray-Bill has essentially the same powers as Thor safe a few differences, but he has values and positions in Marvel cosmos that are unique to him. She doesnt, she litterally copied Thor's personality and added sexist bs such as female villains refusing to fight her because she's a woman, Freyja favoring her because she's female and other crap like which she has never earned by performing feats of her own, but by everyone else bowing down to her in desperate attempt to make readers like her. 3) What has identities anything to do with spells?! Odin put the spell on the hammer, he should be able to remove it at any time, none of this "spell evolved beyond the caster" crap is gonna cut it when Odin enchanted weapons and beings far beyond Mjolnir's power and they've held longer and since before the hammer was even forged, so thats plot convience, pure and simple, so to not allow Odin to take it from her, thats it. 4) Thor is powerful being in his own right, making him unworthy was perfect opportunity to showcase that he isnt useless without needing external artifacts to amp up his power. Yes, he is more vulnerable, but instead of showing his ability to adapt to this new situation and develop new ways to approach conflicts, he runs around trying to find new cluthches to sit on. They didnt evolve his character, they just downgraded him. 5) And that last point is complete and utter shit. Thor has character flaws already: arrogance, superiority complex, attack first/ask questions later, etc.. Making him fearful is complete rupture of his character as being courageous and fearless are some of his greatest qualities. Following Gorr ideology's being right, he should be doubtful of his place in the world, put in question the need for Earth to still have gods, but not his own noble values. So not only did they create entirely new flaws for him, but their ascendent from his best qualities. You sound like a guy who havent actually read about Jane Thor/Unworthy Thor &/or know nothing about Thor Odinson and just spouted generic lines to look like you how writers craft stories. Sorry but you cant bring idiotic points like that when you dont know if it applies or not to the character -_-

  • @gabbonoo

    @gabbonoo

    1) thor is mythological familiarity used commonly in the entertainment industry and adapted and changed radically for slight uniqueness. 2) she didnt literally copy his personality, i dont even know how to respond with how blatantly far off that is. if Heroic and reckless = personality, then you arent yet qualified to summarise. Youre right about the lack of innovation in powers. 3) it was said in the vid, the hammer doesnt comply with the spell completely since it has a will to interpret what and who and if "thor" even is. They havnt delved into the intricacies of spells in the comics far as i can see, so this may or may not have been the way its always been. this part is mostly your preference and since it seems too necessary to the plot and lacks foreshadowing, your against. 4) yes it seems like a missed opportunity. it's kinda like a Dr Who episode where you use all your good material and simply have him run away. 5) he's always had those fears but they havnt been covered in this detail; there is lots to suggest it, unlike the spell stuff. youre right about where im coming from, but it's important to understand the objectivity of your points and how much the writers must understand as well. at most, i would accuse them of treating the readers like those of an arc anime(atmosphere>plot hole proofing), but i wouldnt accuse them of butchering thor.

  • @bigbowss9817

    @bigbowss9817

    6 жыл бұрын

    Elliott Bohringer 1) Thor is a name associated to a mythological deity, because its part of public domain doesnt change that (and doesnt make it entertainment familiarity term, how ridiculous is that lol). 2) She did; she has no personality traits of her own. Jane Foster was always a boring character and lame Lois Lane copycat. She was meant to "ground Thor to humanity" the way Lois did for Superman, but it never worked and as Thor they expected to make her relevant again. The only unique thing about her is how cancer somehow made her worthy (and it does make sense since its established that certain people can be worthier in desperate situations), but thats not personality. As Thor, she is reduced to a gender swap with terrible writing around her. There are tons of existing underdeveloped female characters in Thor mythos: Sif, Amora, Hela, Gaea, Angela, Idùn, Karnilla, etc. and she's just overshadowing them even further... 3) Rob imports some of his own assumptions in the video. The only explanation given is spell evolving beyond Odin's control. The hammer doesnt make you Thor, it grants worthy individuals his power. Odin created that spell and there is no reason he cant unmake it. Its sentience was given by Odin, its power comes from holding a portion of the OdinForce within it, all things open to his control. It has nothing to do with my personal preferences, its just plot convinience taking precedence over continuity and thats a mark of bad writing... 4) Well seems we're in agreement on that at least. 5) Stop the damage control, he never had those flaws, fearlessness was always his strenght. Doubt about his place in the universe (which would have been an appropriate plot line) and fear of not being worthy and feeling of being worthless without his hammer (which is what they are going for) arent the same thing and the latter is an insult to his character. Taking readers for idiots is sign of bad writing and ignoring/changing core elements of the character in favor of promoting an agenda is an insult to the character as far as Im concerned. Anyway, everyone has their taste of stories, you can like what you want, we dont have to agree on this. Just know this current run is in opposition with 50 years of continuity for the character and a slap in the face to anyone that was a fan of the continuity built by Marvel for him during this time...

Thor is still Thor with and without Mjolnir , he just needs to gain his confidence again to get his abilities back which he does in Unworthy Thor issue 5. Also why can't THOR fly without Mjolnir? He has done it before by controlling the Wind like Storm , and wouldn't every time Thor throws Mjolnir in mid air make him fall?

    "How the Thor became Unworthy" is the weakest reveal, strung out and teased for far longer than it was worth in the end. But, as Rob said, any answer would have evoked that reaction -- Even if they dropped it into the original story and we knew it back then, it would have been at the very least interesting, seeing Thor descend into the abyss of self-doubt and justify Gorr's opinion. Now it's just... meh. Bland. Thinly spread. Lacking flavour.

While Odinson be a different son or maybe even adopted. Now that would be a surprise that would make Odinson think he isn't worthy of be called Thor and explain why they use the name Thor as a title.

The fact it took him this much out of it makes me wonder how he hasn't been before.

    Great job as usual Rob. I'm looking forward to more Thor. Unfortunately, I'm still taking issue with Nick Fury bringing down Thor. It's not because I don't like Nick, I think he's one of the most complex characters in the marvel universe and I'm not happy about what Marvel has done with him. I just don't think he was connected to Thor enough to be able to cause that much doubt. Especially since there were others that could of done it like Steve Rogers, Odin, Jane Foster, even Beta Ray Bill. Why not use Loki. As good as the saga has been, it seems flawed now. The length of time that has past may have perhaps made expectations too high. I look forward to reading Jane Foster Thor, but I don't that this final reveal is good enough for Odinson fans. Am I knit picking, 100 percent. Considering how Thor has change, they should have made it perfect.
