The scene in Snow i see it as: Thomas’ temper is high due to the snow and wearing a snowplow, things he hates, so he’s naturally going to be more on edge and annoyed, so it’s understandable that he’s going to be rather rude because he wants to get his work over with.

You might noticed that in the Brenner Era , Thomas has his classic series development, he's a bit cheeky but it's shown multiple times that he has mature. For example in the adventure begins, Edward becomes Thomas's mentor figure and teaches how to work on Sir Topham Hat's railway, and later on in s19 Thomas teaches Phillip the same thing. Man this character grew a lot! Btw congrats for your video Cinder!

I like how Season 5 Thomas isn't a perfect happy guy saint. He still gets impatient from time to time and still has his cheeky savageness although not as bad. Series 5 isn't a perfect season and Thomas isn't perfect either, but I do think the series handled him quite well. I wish more fan productions would show Thomas like this. Most either have him be really immature like he is in the classics. I like the more mature version that does have a great sense of humor and cheek to him still as well as being an absolute troll.

I never realized how much Thomas has grown up throughout the course of the TV show until I saw this video explaining all of that. He went from a young little engine who used to be cheeky, rude, impatient, and thought he knew better than anyone else and only of himself most of the time in Seasons 1 and 2 to an older, wiser, kinder, more experienced, more sympathetic and well respected engine who puts others' needs first before his own in Seasons 3 and 5, which is something I like.

This is when I have to thank Thomas for giving me such a wonderful life. I watched Thomas during my youth and he is one of my most favourite characters not only for his slapstick humour, but he also teaches lots of humility and kindness that is similar to my personality all the way even up to my adulthood. For instance, from being so hot-headed and proud in the earlier seasons, to being an engine with a very positive personality, being more thoughtful and understanding with a wiser attitude later on. Throughout the series production, it has always shown to me that Thomas did mature and develop himself into a true leader and role model to all the kids that grew up with him. That’s so true. Even though the cheekiness and teasing is still there, I still think that I was like Thomas (in earlier seasons) in the earlier stages of my life, to being more responsible, mature, humble and empathetic as Thomas in the later seasons as well as my life progressed. As a matter of fact, I am so grateful to have watched Thomas growing up, so that I can learn how to emulate Thomas in the later seasons of his show by being with wisdom, more kinder to others, learning from mistakes, improving my attitude and to ensure that I deeply understand the needs for others before my own. Thank you Thomas for defining my childhood🌟

From your analysis, I might defend Thomas going back to cheeky ways in Season's 6 & 7 as his growth not being quite linear, as can happen to people. Plus, in some ruder examples like with Percy in Scaredy Engines, you can kinda chalk it up to Thomas not knowing when to stop. With Percy, they've been jokey friends for a long while now, and Thomas probably figured Percy wouldn't mind all the teasing. This happens again for when he's rude to Henry and Salty while joking with Percy. The show in general excels off characters having great flaws and Thomas is perhaps the greatest example of this.

Thomas' development throughout the classic series was handled pretty well in my opinion. It was fun watching Thomas' antics in Season 1 and interesting seeing how the pride in having his own branchline got to his head in Season 2, and I really love seeing the kinder side of Thomas in Season 3 as he starts to progress into a character more like Edward. I don’t like that Thomas' ruder side came back in Season 4 but I understand the stories they were adapting were stories that were skipped over in Season 2 which is why Thomas was acting more like his younger self. Season 5 However had the PERFECT mix between the cheeky and joke filled Thomas, the impatient and slightly arrogant Thomas, and the kind and mature Thomas from season 3! I like to think that Thomas' impatient and rude personality comes in when he’s having a bad day, like in the episode Snow where he hates the snow more than ever and lets it out on Percy, and I feel they same way with Season 6. The definitive Thomas (in my opinion) is kind and a good friend but will often tease other engines when they’re in a ridiculous situation but means nothing of it, and can tell when not to joke around. Season 7 Thomas is simply too immature for my liking, and while he has some good episodes, I don’t like that they made Thomas & Percy the Bill & Ben of the season but atleast half of his appearances are good! Thomas is one of my favorite characters and I really enjoyed the video!

I was going to put Thomas when I ever make a tier list in mid but now I might put Thomas in a High B, I also think that the Brenner Era did some justice for Thomas he’s still cheeky but mature plus there was a the episode “not so slow coaches” where Thomas went all around the island trying to get Annie and Clarabel after Charlie accidentally put them on Caitlin’s train, there aren’t a lot of engines who would do that in this show or at all that I can think of it shows how Thomas really cares about his two coaches. Thomas may not have been the main character in the railway series , but in the model series he became a great character. I mean in all honesty most of the model characters are amazing , lot have improvements from their railway series counterparts. It just comes to show the crew of the model series (faults and all) cared about these characters , now weather they truly understood the character , different story, but they cared about them. David miton probably the most caring of them ( I mean the man drew his own map layout of sodor, if that ain't love idk what is). To me season one ( series one for the Brits and everyone else) would not have been made today. I mean season one they were all pretty much dicks to each other. That I don't think would fly today (some for better some for worse) but Thomas is kinda representative of that he's an ass at the beginning of the series but as the seasons go on he actually becomes a fairly well rounded character , he know when to "jab the knife in" when you mess up and he told you before. He also know when to be serious or to joke at that moment isn't right , James and the trouble with trees comes to mind for both points. Another thought on the season 2 bit, how he's not a good role model. I'd say the fact that season 2 being there is why I'd say he eventually would be a decent role model. Like don't get me wrong he's being an ass in a lot of it ,but he fails a lot he takes the hits and doesn't let it go to his head. I think a good example of my point is another franchise, Red Dead. The main character I wanna focus on is John Marston ,former gang member married a prostitute and settled down in the hope of redemption. On face John wouldn't be seen as a good role model , being he was part of a gang ,killed people for money , etc. That's where I'd disagree (not that I'm condoning that stuff) but he is a man that has learned from his mistakes and has grown as a character. I'm saying his flaws are what make him a better role model , like Thomas is in this instance. Also him being the second oldest on the railway has always been something I often forget or I'm like "oh yeah that's right". I mean Thomas and Edward built what the engines run on now ,yet he's played as a younger kid like character that learns. I think it's an interesting point in that , their writing is trying to give off the feel of " there's always more for everyone to learn , even the old guard of Thomas and Edward. Sorry for the essay just thoughts I have, my two cents. Edit :I ended up adding more to my essay sorry for that great video btw.

That’s why Thomas is my favourite character. He went from a fussy, impatient, reckless, cocky, arrogant, cheeky, condescending prick despite having a good heart to a kind, sensible, mature, selfless, helpful, cheerful and optimistic engine despite being cheeky and occasionally cocky but it is not as mean spirited as it was in Season 2 and when it comes to complicated situations, Thomas put his cheekiness aside and acts more serious just to help his friends. It is kind of sad may fans don’t notice and talk about Thomas’ character development maybe because it’s overshadowed by Thomas regressing and being shoehorned in every episode where he doesn’t fit and also there are other fans who just see him as a rude and arrogant prick. In a way that is true but there is way more to Thomas to him just being full of himself. Thomas became my favourite around 2010 l think when l was watching an old Thomas tape on my old black TV which showcased his S3-S5 personality.

"In a noticeable different place at the end of the season." We can say that about Gordon in the RWS. The books literally start at the start of his life, and follows it through to a heartwarming, meaningful conclusion. And in that final story, Gordon doesn't whine about being taken off the express. He instead accepts it, as he is too old to pull the express like he used to. Plus he's been in revenue service some 80 odd years. Longer than any of the Pacifics in the UK.

This is a great analysis of Thomas' personality and character. What the classic series did correctly was show characters with both strengths and flaws. All of the cast in the classic series had them. We saw character growth too, as we saw here in Thomas' example. From a cheeky obnoxious character to someone who matured and was a voice of reason at times, but, sometimes that cheekiness crept back in. The writing back then was so beautiful. Thomas and other shows followed this formula well. Sadly nowadays, many show creators and showrunners make one dimensional character (ie one is the happy one, another is the grump, etc.) Shows are too formulaic now, too bland, not a tidbit of what life is all about. You don't meet one dimensional people in school or work right? No, everyone has strengths and flaws.

This video you made was simply wonderful, and I agree, as this character growth Thomas went through in the classic era was wonderful, and honestly underrated, as most people really love the cheeky prick from the first 2 seasons more, and that’s fine and all, but too me, the Thomas from S5 is easily my favorite incarnation of the character and what made him my absolute favorite of the whole franchise. He really felt like a main character in that regard and well, I really wish he stayed that for the remainder of the series. A very satisfactory analysis of Thomas's underlying development in the series. Something to add about Thomas's respect for Edward that was clear to me was when he stuck up for his worth in the episode 'Old Iron', along with Percy who had also come to respect Edward for providing tuition when he arrived. Thomas doesn't give up when the chips are down; neither does Edward. They find their equal in each other in that, and that clearly had some effect in influencing Thomas to become more advising as time went on. Considering you do want to talk about Thomas and Edward's dynamic in another video, I think what I've brought up here should be worth mentioning as a valid case in point. Considering too how you raised Percy's progression in the series music-wise, and how fellow fan 'The Unlucky Tug' recently brought to light Percy's remarkable progression in the classic series on the whole, I think it is well worth elaborating on in another video. Keep that in mind. Regards, Samuel Farris.

well done on this! in my opinion thomas and percy BOTH had the greatest development throughout classic series but thomas has slight edge. Also few fun facts in season 5 Thomas doesn't have a true lead role all his episodes whether main or secondary are shared with another: trouble with trees and make someone happy is more about James, something in the air is way more about henry, cranky bugs is more about cranky, old slow coach is more about old slow coach, rumors is honestly more of a gordon episode. Another aspect of maturity in season 6 I noticed was in world's strongest engine he did not directly interact with Diesel once instead him and Percy casually stood on the sideline pulling a Toby and let the idiot make a fool of himself.

However as I came to re-watch the classic seasons over the last year or two (season 1 through 7), I do see that now subconsciously. Now that I've seen this though (which I'm really glad I've seen it now because I had a bad day and this cheered me up, so thanks for cheering me up 🙂), I can see that transition and progression as a character and his growth as well.

This is why Thomas wasn't such a bother for me in the seasons before the HIT era, because he acted more mature than he was when he first started on Sodor, that and the fact he wasn't constantly shoved in your face every single episode that didn't focus on him. With the HIT era, Nitrogen Era and even the Brenner era to an extent it suffered from this issue. However the worst offenders development wise are the HIT, Nitrogen and BWBA era, dumbing him down to his childish self from Season 1 by either making him too stupid, too nice or too much of an asshole. I get it's to make children relate to Thomas but there are other characters that you can make act like this besides Thomas (Phillip, Cleo, etc.), I know Thomas is the main character of the show but it's called Thomas and Friends for a reason, the show isn't just about Thomas.

It just seems like Thomas goes all the way back how he was in S1 combined with is 8-16 persona with making another fucking mistake by derailing Gordon’s coaches. In S5 while being cheeky, Thomas had matured and there was barely any episode where he was being reckless but just like with Hit Era and Miller Era, SLOTLT depicts Thomas losing all his character growth by making a mistake and always having to learn his lesson. In this film, Thomas is just being immature. Seriously, what is the point of making a character grow in S5 when you just fucking regress him in the laters seasons and film. As a child I never seemed that interested in the classic era that much, except for season 5 & 6 as Alec Baldwin is my favorite narrator and since I grew up watching the show during the hit era. While I have learned a lot about the show following Brit Allcrofts departure, I’m starting to understand more and more why people prefer the golden era of Thomas and Friends of Seasons 1 to 7. While the hit era and early days of the cgi era will remain a big part of my childhood and liking Thomas more, I’m starting to prefer the earlier seasons back when the show was done by people who knew what they were doing as some episodes during the hit and sharen miller era aren’t that great. Nevertheless, I am glad when Andrew Brenner took over he made things better, and while the cgi era ended up a sour note thx to Mattel, Thomas and Friends will still be remembered for those who made it and what inspired its creation because of wilbert awdrys books which I myself have never read til my recent birthday and love his work. I think S17 like S5 was Thomas' grown up season as I think that season is good CGI Thomas to me. Just like with "Snow" in "No snow for Thomas" Thomas being in an unhappy mood takes off his snowplow and hides it so he doesn't have to wear it. He then regrets his mistake when to his horror finds out about Emily taking his passengers in his place just like how they first met and even disobeys Sir Topham Hatt's orders just so he can work without fuss.

If Gordon has grown up as a character in the RWS, then Thomas definitely grew up as one too in the Classic TV Series. However, I mostly prefer him in S1-5 (The Britt Allcroft persona). That is the definitive good role model influence of said-character. While S6 and 7 had their moments, but I mostly consider them mid-Classic and mid-HiT because while good, they also predict of some really turbulent things coming down the line when HiT bought out the franchise even before Mattel took over. Still, Classic Thomas will always be in our hearts and the kids these days should strive to be like him. The HiT/Mattel version of Thomas feels very frustrating, but that depends on which era/episode/movie you're watching.

I can sort of forgive the regressions in Seasons Six and Seven since they often felt like things Thomas didn't really come to understand the consequences of. He mellowed out in Season Three but stuff like his teasing of others or apathy towards Henry's bad health weren't really addressed beforehand. I don't think it helps that More From Thomas (one of the last books to really limelight his negative qualities) was scattered throughout early Season Two, when it likely would have worked better as the arc leading up to a more mature Thomas. One detail I DO like about the later seasons though, is that after What's the Matter With Henry, Thomas realises Henry's sickness is VERY real, and it sticks the WHOLE SHOW. He's even the first to voice concern in episodes like It's Good To Be Gordon. I think that's an effective detail, gives you the idea he really lamented over how much he undermined Henry's situation in earlier stories.

18:52 I was thinking maybe Thomas was just a little grumpy, or having an off day. I know I sure can be grumpy when I’m having an off day. Or perhaps, he was feeling grumpy about having to clear the snow AND he was having an off day.

Thomas is a very developed character by Season 5, despite regressing by Season 6 and 7 that coincidentally paved way for his portrayal in the HIT era. And regarding that remark in the Season 5 episode, "Snow" where he just gets annoyed at Percy getting stuck in the snow, I believe he's just agitated of having to wear his snowplow, and we all know for a fact he hates wearing it, but at least it's not like in Season 1 where he nearly destroys it, so that demonstrates at least some of his growth.

That’s why l don’t like that HIT episode Thomas, Emily and Snowplough. Not only did the writers make Emily sort of unlikeable it’s the episode where it started this trope of ‘Thomas doing anything to avoid his snowplough’. That trope shouldn’t have come back because while Thomas hates his snowplough, he also understands that without his snowplough, he would be in a situation where he’s stuck in the snow. It was shown in S1 at the end of the episode ‘Thomas, Terence and the Snow’ and ‘Thomas’ Christmas Party’ and even a S6 episode which l don’t remember the title of. I don’t mind Thomas being cheeky and teasing others. I just hate when Thomas is written as a regressed child which goes against his maturity

@@samsea0489 I think the S6 episode you're referring to is "It's Only Snow". The only thing I hate about that ep is when Thomas is wearing a "loaner" snowplow, and not his traditional blue one. But I do agree Thomas (and all of the characters) definitely regressed by S8 when the show was fully owned by HIT, some of his regression definitely started in S6, but not majorly at first, but the signs were there.

Season 5 was the peak of the show, so I guess Mitton and Allcroft wanted to dial up Thomas' maturity to like 100. As a result, this is the only season where Thomas doesn't act selfish or impatient, instead he calls others out when they're being selfish and gives them good advice. My favorite episode from this season, is also mine of the entire show, which is Thomas and the Rumors. The reason it's my favorite is because of how Thomas tries to help the children, if this was in say Seasons 8-16 what would you expect? Thomas roaming the railway and taking sand without asking or whatever he did in those 9 seasons? Well not here all Thomas said was "I'll see what I can do" meaning that he may not find a way to help the children reopen their playground, but he will try. God I love Season 5! But of course Thomas is still the cheeky little tank engine that we all know and love. The HiT Era treated Thomas like an idiot, but man those first 5 seasons got him so right, even the last 2 seasons did him well, it's just a shame they did not continue this arc.

I feel like I remember reading a comment on Twitter saying that his characterization in season 1 was that of someone in their mid-teens but by season 5 his characterization was that of someone in their late 30's or early 40's. I can see that.

In Season 1, he’d be 17 years old in the first half of the season and got his first branchline, and the later half of the season 18 years old. In Season 2, he’s be in his early 20’s. In Seasons 3-4 in his mid 20’s. And in Seasons 5 he’d be like 30. And the same with Season 6 to an extent with his jokey side to him. That’s just my opinion though.
