How This Korean Designer Turns Trash Into Fashion | EVERYDAY BOSSES #59
South Korea’s love of fast fashion is creating a surplus of cheap, disposable clothes, which get thrown away after a few years, if not months. Many of those items are being dumped in landfills or burned, eventually polluting our environment. That's why designer Lee Sung-ju started to create clothing and fashion made of trash and recycled material, and she even established her own fashion brand called Darcygom that aims to prove that fashion can be sustainable, eco-friendly, and ethical while also being trendy and stylish.
Thanks to Sung-ju for sharing her story. If you enjoyed this video, download our free community app MOGAO and discover untold stories from Asia and all over the world. Very creative! Also, if someone tries to tell her "your style is trash" she still will be right.

The hater: self destruction 100
Hello everyone, I feel all mushy inside to think that there are other humans interested in the way I design! I take a little inspiration from Korean tradition and mix it with a little bit of my crazy. For those who might be interested in the sustainable outfits in this clip (mainly 4 outfits are visible) 10:08 1. Car Seat Jeogori: The grey jacket is made out of car seats. (to be specific the passenger and the driver seat) 2. Coffee Bag Durumagi: The White long coat is made with local coffee shop's coffee bags which makes it waterproof (AND fair trade yassssss!) 3. Ottogi Banner Dress: The yellow home dress with the organic cotton cream blouse is made with used banners from a food company called Ottogi. 4. Multi-Stripe Saekdong Sapok Pants: This is NOT an upcycling piece but a sustainable fashion piece. Saekdong is a multi-stripe Korean traditional fabric and currently, there is only 1 company that makes it the traditional way. When he stops making it we will lose that part of Korean fabric history forever. :-( So I had to make hanbok pants with it. Thank you to the models @jun_yoona_ @xae__xin @drock_thisd @oreziz And finally thank you Asian Boss for giving me a voice on your platform. Stay Safe sending lots of love from Seoul Korea darcygom

Fingers crossed more will do it without super high price tags. But if it's expensive and it helps increase wages/salaries of those who make it and the sources are sustainable, for those who can afford it would be worth the support. Btw feel free to visit my channel for environmental issues and empowerment themes 😀
I want to grow into a cool grandma is honestly the best world view I've heard in a while
This shows that if you keep your mind open to world and possibilities 3-4 years later you can find your own passion project and be successful while helping the world! What an inspiring woman and a story. Thanks Sung-ju and Asian Boss.

That's a really good idea!
I don’t support fast fashion anymore because it’s so wasteful. I just buy vintage and secondhand clothes from thrift stores now. I think this is such a great idea! Reduce, reuse, recycle ♻️
This is truly unique. Such a wonderful soul!
6:41 yes, so amazing, I'm into environnemental related stuff so this last year I learnt a bit about environmental architecture in a free course and that it is also a business that contributes to a lot of waste with some materials. I've always been into fashion but never thought further than avoiding the furs bc I'm a vegan so now I'll feel better spending a bit more in good quality and sustainable clothes as I spend a bit more on my food bc if I eat wrong I'll spend what I didn't in my food in my future hospital bill.
This is so creative and innovative..
Her style is very fresh cool and unique! I love that she incorporates traditional Korean elements 😀
I LOVE that the designer focuses on culture, sustainability, and the story behind it all 🥰
This was very insightful, its great to see another designers perspective and methods. I'm a fashion design student and a lot of the time I think about how I can be more sustainable. It's an area I struggle with since I have to be both creative and waste-less, finding the balance is challenging but I'm overcoming it.

I'm a fashion designer, the first thing i made(as an adult) was out of this lovely fabric my aunt gave me, wonderful quality, beautiful fabric, i made a robe, screwed it up, it was terrible, i got so upset that i wasted that fabric, so upset. So i started making new clothes out of old clothes, i rescued the fabric from these donated clothes, cut it up, made new clothes out of it. If i screwed that up, not so upsetting, and that's how i became a sustainable fashion-designer, lol. I make some stuff out of new fabric, but i so prefer using old clothes, i'm more of a 'fix something old' type of persona than create something totally new, it's more of a challenge. It would be so easy to just make a new coat out of new fabric, especially if i were using a sewing machine, all that's boring to me. You should really try doing this, it's so fun. I started with tops, jazzing-up a boob-tube/baby doll top when i was a young teenager in the 00s. I ruched the sides of the boob-tube and pleated the satin baby-doll bottom part, i wore it a lot, i loved it, it was red and pink, kinda cringey but i still loved it, pleating satin isn't such a great thing, lol.

@@RoxanneLavender Wow, that sounds amazing. I'll definitely try that out, thank you 😊
I mean every region had their own beautiful traditional clothes even in the same region there was so many variety of beautiful cultural clothes but I think globalization is demanding everyone to wear the same .And it's stupid how people can be made fun of because of what they find beautiful to wear.🥺🌸💗🌈
I hope every clothing store goes 100% recycled within the next 5 years, and people keep their clothes longer🙏 it's a win for both parties pockets (they both save money)
Are any of the viewers here working in the fashion industry? I and I'm sure many other people would love to hear about your experiences and perspective~

Amazing idea! I also want to buy that and save the environment at the same time.
Love whenever a video comes out !
I've been making new clothes out of old clothes, mine, and ones donated to me for over 10 years. I really love it. It's very rewarding 'work', though i hand-sew everything. My next project is a coat, it's a wool 'style', not real wool(i'm allergic), maternity pea coat, i'm gonna sew a faux-fur scarf from the 90s that i found, that is like new, onto the collar, and make a hood from scratch to sew onto it too, idk what else i'm gonna do with it yet, but that's my next big exciting thing. I've got some trousers and tops to design and make too, and some unique sport's bra/corset designs out of new fabrics though, those aren't used, lol. I like making cardigans though, that's my thing, especially ugly ones.
Love your content! Keep up the excellent work.

Haven't watched everything yet but this title reminded me of the portuguese company "Garbags" which also turns trash into products by 'upcycling' them
@RoxanneLavender

I think the title of this video is misleading. She's not making clothes out of actual 'trash', she's making clothes out of people's thrown away clothing. 'Trash' gives off the impression that it's like, soda cans and plastic-wrap. And i know of a few brands that actually make accessories out of that kind of real actual trash.
