How This Guy Balances Impossible Rock Structures | Obsessed | WIRED

Michael Grab's mind-bending rock formations aren't held together by glue or steel rods. Shockingly, his rock piles are stacked using only the laws of gravity. Michael's rock formations have taken the internet by storm, and brought an even greater attention to rock balancing. Find out just how Michael makes the seemingly impossible, possible.

These aren’t Inuksuk. This is rock balancing, which is an art form that, as the video states, is common throughout the world. Micheal Grab very likely isn’t Inuit and they aren’t being used for navigation or communication in the Arctic, so even if they were Inuksuk, they wouldn’t be traditional. _Pardon me. It’s just that seeing Indigenous (or FNMI) things being mislabeled is something I have an issue with after everything we have endured. Inuksuk especially. Inuksuk are, much like dream catchers, often sold as souvenirs and trinkets and made by people who don’t know their true meaning and value. Cultural appropriation and such. Call it what it is by the proper name given, don’t forcefully label it with another culture’s title._

Also called Rock Cairns, these were traditionally for things like - gravestone markers, but thanks to instagram: there are parts of the country where this is outlawed because it's like littering - sounds crazy right? imagine precariously heavy and dangerous shrapnel all over public parks, people balancing actual THOUSANDS of columns of rocks. in Acadia National Park, it took volunteers 2 months to knock over 3,600 stacks in 2016, The reason? injuries: it's actually hard to see these rock stacks when they are among a sea of rocks, some with very heavy boulders, people have lost toes, fingers, and heavy gouges. The thing is - it's a social media fad, like selfies, and national parks want you to STOP doing it.

He was unbelievably patient and creative like this guy. He once had 37(!) stacks set up on a 50'-75' stretch of the creek that ran through the park.....just mind-boggling ! Most were still there the next morning, as he DIDN'T knock them down himself, ever....not sure why this guy doesn't leave them for others to discover and enjoy.....hmmm.

This guy rocks. Can't believe he can be out in the water when it's stone cold. I feel like he could be even more boulder with his presentation. It's cool he knocks it down, he gets to start with a clean slate. Feel like it takes a lot of patience though so I hope he doesn't lose his marbles, but his mind seems crystal clear.
