1971 in Saint Charles, Missouri, I was in summer school when the prototype F15 was flown out of Lambert in a C5 to Edwards. All we heard was this big roar, saw a big shadow, and our AFJROTC instructor told us what we just witnessed. I was 16. That was 51 years ago. Hard to believe. Then I realized, the B52 - is 70 years old, the C5 is 54 years old, and the C130 is 68 years old and STILL in production!

So glad the 15s are still getting updates - I have nothing but respect for the F-22 and 35 but planes of this era are like the muscle cars of military aviation. Big, crude, intimidating.
Funny they never mentioned the Israeli Air Force F-15 that flew home missing a wing, was repaired and put back into service.

Did you know the first of the F-15 A/B had it's speed brake was 3 feet shorter, in the early 80's the speed breaks were mortified to what you see today. One correction on your comment on speed brake, the speed break control is a toggle swatch on the right throttle and can be set to any position you desire, use your left thumb and push up and hold and release it to any position you desire. Push the toggle aft and it will lower to any position as desired. I spent 22 years as a Crew Chief on 15 A/B/C/D/E. it's old now but still has a punch.

The B and D models are the trainers for the A and C models, respectively. Although they are both fully combat capable, the intended purpose of the rear cockpit is to carry a flight instructor to help transition a pilot who's new to the F-15 into flying the Eagle solo, or to make civilians sick on PR or familiarization flights 😁 Also gives the enlisted personnel good incentives to shine, as familiarization flights are awarded to outstanding enlisted personnel as a reward for excellence.

Had a friend who was an F16 pilot/instructor at DM in the early '00s. At the time l had a beach house on a well known New England resort. l offered him and his family an entire summer there in return for an hour's ride in the two seat, trainer model. He told me he'd be glad to take me up on it if it wouldn't cause him to be court martialed out of his career. He retired a couple of years ago as a full colonel, one of the most modest and quiet people l've known. Can't reveal his call sign which l learned only recently from a chance meeting with one of his former students at a Costco gas station.

I love both of those planes! I could not imagine being the pilot of either of them. The real reason for the cost is the long term government policy of reducing competition in all aspects of government contracting while allowing every preferred contractor to get away with massive cost overruns which are never seriously contested. The reason for this is that Congress knew they were going to do it when they approved the contracts.
Great American great again

@13:00 WOW!
Impressive. Great to learn about the myriad details.
The potential of the Vickers Supermarine Spitfire was inhibited by the G tolerance of the person in the cockpit and this modern aircraft is exactly the same. The Spitfire had an alternative rudder bar which helped the pilot to be able withstand a little more G than some other aircraft. The safe limits of G forces had already been reached years before the Second World War. Even when the pilot is clothed in a G-suit the human element was an arbitrary limit which was rightly feared.
@englishpassport6590
Жыл бұрын
Early Spitfires couldnt do negative G turns because initially it had a primitive carburrettor which cut the power provision and the Messerschmidt 109Es punished them very severely for it. The equivalent scenario now is the disadvantage of having a flesh and blood pilot in the cockpit instead of being fitted with a fully comprehensive guidance system. One which allows the aircraft to fulfill its full Hi-G aerobatic potential and avoid the drones and guided missiles. Start looking for another job chaps unfortunately the alternative is unthinkable.
