Landon Crawford With Aqualux Auto Detailing In McKinney Texas Talks About Clear Coat in 2020. It Is Getting Thinner Than It Has Ever Been. I need to correct a statement in the video, I said 1.5 mills thickness I mean 4-5 microns for a certain coating...so please forgive me

Yes, it definitely sounds like since the 2020 vehicle clear coat coatings are typically now as low as about 4 mils or about 100 microns; since we know that 25 microns equals one mil. With that being the case it definitely sounds imperative to actually fundamentally correct this rather serious deficiency by sufficiently preparing and prepping the surface of the vehicle to accept a supplemental adjunct amended additional clear coating layers; as that definitely sounds like that existing clear coating layer is far to thin at only 100 microns(half the thickness of a business card). One might logically think to add at least four additional coats of clear coat layering; at about at least 25 microns per additional clear coat layer hopefully; in order to be able to give oneself a bit more operating safe error margin in the future in case one has to perform a future two step color correction on ones vehicle down the line at some point if needed. One might get their brand name of clear coat on the internet from Restoration Shop with the resin and hardener activator in their gallon kit for about $150 bucks; which should allow one to be able to use even ones branded name airbrush vehicle coating finish application gun to have more potential application of the clear coat layers applied on the vehicle surface but with much less over spray of clear coat; however one might have to use some added amount of viscosity reducer clear coat additive added to the clear coat being sprayed; so that one can lay down a quality uniform and consistently applied clear coat layer also as well. One can also naturally of course also apply a high quality branded name ceramic coat paint sealant also as well naturally of course using the multiple layering scheme also as well to increase the actual depth between the vehicle base coat and the final applied top coat ceramic coat ending layer if so desired; in order to help increase the actual combined clear coat layer plus all of the actual combined ceramic coat layers added up together. Their is absolutely no reason at all that one should have to accept such substandard thickness of their rather thin clear coat layer; and one can definitely do something about it quite readily by having it done by a local competent vehicle detailer; in the case one does not want to tackle such a job on a do it yourself basis naturally of course.

You are on point. These days I only do paint enhancements. AIO with a polish paid. Keeps me safe and most won’t keep the damn car out of a car wash. Number one question I ask, have you ever had a correction before?YES. I won’t touch it. Too much litigation these days. Keep on Marine. Never quit.🇱🇷🤜🤜🤜

I detailed a 2016 F150 with 8k miles on it a few weeks ago and old man owns that’s garage kept. He said it had never been polished and he bought it brand new. All my readings were between 2.2 and 2.5 mils. Paint is getting ridiculous and making our jobs more difficult. Meters are a must these days.

If your getting readings that low your gage is faulty. 2016 F150 is 4.5 mils on average.

I detail brand new vehicles still covered in shipping wraps and plastic. Just taking off the plastics can marr the paint. the glue residue leaves imprints inside the clearcoat. removing the tap lines requires a polish practically. Add in the piano finish trim pieces that just looking at it scratches it. Thank you for this video. I was nodding my head the whole time. you rock Landon!

correct me if I'm wrong but the reading of the tool is total layers of thickness, it is not just clear, right? I got the same gauge and if you use the metal substrate and the sample measuring layers the gauge reads exactly the measurement in the label which means that if you read from a car a 6 mil you need to divide that by 3 ( approx) to get the thickness of the clear layer , assuming at the factory they did 2 coats of 1 mil each( primer, base, clear), that is why in a repaint you can read 15mil+- because when they repaint they might do body work and add primer and other layers on top of the already existing coatings and since is sprayed by hand most probably the thickness will not be of 1 mil eash pass

My wife and I just bought a 2020 Tundra TRD Pro a few days ago and I’m very curious to what the thickness is. I’m going to check it when I get home. I have already ordered the TMR. Now I just have to find time to get it all done. Haha

eldrin I know I said mills but I meant microns so please forgive me for the mistake. I appologize. The two coatings that add microns is t6+ and t4+. When t6+ is used hvlp it can add up to 25 microns to the paint.

Tesla even has a lawsuit against them because of how cheap their paint work is, and starts to degrade really quick. Whatever these companies are saving just goes into their pockets and they keep jacking up the prices.
