How the World Works: John L. Casti at TEDxVienna

/ tedxvienna
www.tedxvienna.at/
Dr. Casti received his Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Southern California. He worked at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA, and served as a profesor in the USA before becoming one of the first members of the research staff at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna, Austria. He has also been on the faculty of the Technical University of Vienna and the Santa Fe Institute in the USA. He has published eight technical monographs in the area of system theory and mathematical modeling, as well as 12 volumes of popular science, including Paradigms Lost, Complexification, Would-Be Worlds, The Cambridge Quintet, and Mood Matters. His 2012 book, XEVENTS addresses the role complexity overload plays in the creation of potentially life-changing events such as the crash of the Internet or the outbreak of a global pandemic. Dr. Casti is currently Director of The X-Center, a prívate research institute in Vienna focusing on development of tools for anticipation of extreme events in human society.
About TEDx
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Are we experiencing more x-events along with our advancement? Can advancement itself can be an x-event? That was kind of case with my home country (Nepal). We had (still having) hard time changing from self-sustained agriculture oriented country to now a country struggling for political stability trying to fit into the world of globalisation. Or can there be a larger natural x-event on its course already? Yellowstone volcano, Magnetic pole flip, ... I somehow find Prof. Casti's lecture fitting with the ancient civilisation theories of Graham Hancock et al - "advanced civilisations brought down by x-events". But the biggest question of all would be - "can we predict x-events (esp. from being orchestrated)"? The concepts and structures presented in this lecture inspire to think how the world works. I like it.

Really sorry for the really long reply brother but predicting an x event might or might not be possible A larger natural x-event can be predicted to happen but only to an extent, we don't even know the amount of downfall it's going to bring as even that is going to be calculated but at the end of the day, it's going to be predictable but not entirely. Advanced civilizations brought down by x-events might the consequence of their own negligence and greed I believe as they were advancing way too fast than we can even assume. I know that your question is not completely answered, but this is the best I can do as a 15 year old

I guess where we land after the fall depends on us, we just need to realise that we are falling. The moment we realise that impact we stop the fall.

Too much metaphorical and hypothetical use for me . Wish I'd have the brajn and time . What is thjs talk about ? What did you get from this that was something you didn't know and took with you to serve you well in your self progression? I'm not being a smart @$$ . Really curious as to what I missed here .

Mix of different ideas here, but to sum up a massive concept that had already been summed up. It's an idealistic view on creation through destruction... but a very ivory tower version that sees your death as expedient for others. I feel I'm being a little judgemental, however this talk reminds me of the forgotten sacrifice of people struggling for rights. For modern context think of those poor people in Hong Kong we abandoned. Instead of mass importing them to the west.

I think this dude have but little idea about what he was talking. World works because we make it work. That geography analogy came out of blue. Imagine if everybody stopped working, nothing will happen. Nature operates by its laws - we can mould and create - but we can't challenge it.
