A method of boosting snow and rainfall may help ease drought conditions in the western US.
Cloud seeding techniques boost clouds’ ability to drop precipitation by releasing particles that attract water, making it easier for water droplets or snowflakes to form.

@@Laff700 Info from around the 70s and 80s suggest they made hurricanes such as Camille and Frederick worse than they would have been by secretly experimenting with cloud seeding. They supposedly wanted them to rain out before hitting land, but ended up making them much worse once they hit land. So if they're so damn smart these days, where was all this magical rainfall when the US West Coast was burning down last year? Oh yeah, that's right, it was all delayed until the recent massive floods... How about we like try *not* screwing with mother nature so much?..

Well isn't this just brilliant. Silver iodide is known to be toxic and is regulated under the Clean Waters Act as a hazard substance. If there is bioaccumulation from overuse or repeated exposure in an area, you may get your rain but you'll most likely lose the aquatic life in your ponds, streams, lakes etc. Hmm! What may seem a simple solution to a serious concern may end up having far greater consequences for many species down the road.

There's other options which could be used. The seeding material only needs to be able to serve as a nucleation point for water condensation, and there's a long list of candidates. Also, I think they don't really need to use much to seed clouds.

I wonder, is it possible that getting more precipitation where you are than you would otherwise receive, might deprive those downwind of your location of rain/snow they would've otherwise gotten.

Idaho took Washington State all the way to the supreme court back in the 1970's claiming WA cloud seeding in the Cascade mountains was causing draught in Idaho. They dropped the case when WA Governor Dixy Lee Ray talked Idaho into joining the seeding program. Right now India is protesting China seeding over 5.5 million sq kilometers, an area 1.5 times size of India, claiming they are stealing rain that would have been snow pack in the Himalayan mountains causing draught in India.

I don't recall exactly what year, but during the 60s this was attempted via planeload by dropping silver-coated granules directly into cloud systems with a ~30% success rate. I would imagine in a dustbowl situation, the chance might outweigh the cost ratio even though you couldn't control exactly where it was going to rain. Now that we have so much more technology that measures storm data and predictability models, surely there's a cheaper solution (at altitude, one would assume any particle with appreciable weight will contribute much like seeding a clam).

Weather is a product of temperature trying to balance itself throughout the whole Earth. Manipulating weather in one part of the Earth effects weather in other parts of the Earth. It would be a shame if in the long run cloud seeding would cause drought to existing rain forests.

Well the rainforests in South America are sort of surrounded by oceans which would replenish any water vapor lost from cloud seeding in other parts of the world. So that fear's kind of unfounded. Also, even if it somehow actually managed to occur, we could fix the issue basically immediately by not cloud seeding to close to said rainforests.
