How The Vancouver Grizzlies REALLY Lost Their NBA Team

Спорт

The Vancouver Grizzlies only existed from 1995 until 2001. After 6 seasons of losing a ton of games, they relocated to Memphis. In this video, I talk about the full history of the Vancouver Grizzlies and what caused the relocation. Enjoy!

As someone who worked for the Grizzlies during the time they were in Vancouver, a few things need to be discussed and were not mentioned in the video. 1) The moment Michael Heisley bought the team--he did everything he could to run the team into the ground. Season ticket holders were not given their tickets and many had to come to the box office for every game to get their tickets. 2) No phone lines were set up to receive information about buying tickets. The Vancouver Canucks had about 20 people on the payroll year round selling tickets. Grizzlies had an automated number where you would leave a message and they would call you back. 3) They stopped even trying for corporate sponsorship under Heisley and those companies who wanted to be sponsors were given the royal round and and told they would pay the same price as LA Lakers corporate sponsors. 4) Key managers did not live in the city. they guy in charge if selling season tickets lived in Oakland and would get weekly updates--not daily--but weekly updates. 5) Several UFAs expressed an interest in signing in Vancouver but were turned down by the team--being told that the team was going to build from within and would not be signing players--only to trade for overpriced players instead

I lived out in Vancouver when the grizzlies were around, I went to a few of their games and it was always a good time even though the team was bad… The best part was easily the mascot named Grizz, hey simple grizzly bear costume, but after halftime he would always turn into Super Grizz, that same grizzly bear, only now dressed up as a superhero with a mask and cape and everything, a giant T-shirt cannon and he would fly around the arena and everything, it was great.

That was extremely interesting. I am a born and raised Memphian and a huge Grizzlies fan. I was very excited and surprised when, now the late owner Michael Heisley had chosen my hometown to relocate his franchise to. To this day I am very grateful to him for that decision. There is no doubt in my mind that if it had been any other owner, rather than Heisley, they would not have chosen Memphis. But sometimes when I look back on it, I feel bad for the fans in Vancouver. Because if we ever lost the Grizzlies because of relocating, I would be devastated. It must be nice being from cities like NYC, L.A. CHICAGO and other bigger markets, where you know that no matter how often you have to tank in order to be competitive in the future, it is almost impossible to lose your franchise to another city. IT MUST BE NICE..... ( RIP MICHEAL HEISLEY.)

I was born in the Bahamas and moved to Vancouver BC when I was 14yrs,I love the place.Steve would have had a city and a country on his shoulders. To be in the NBA draft should be considered an honour no matter what team or country you play in.From my point of view in any sport a drafted player should have no business at all refusing to play for a city and an entire country,Francis plays over seas now in China.Any professional sport should have a rule that states that the refusing party has to at least sign a 1yr contract. If the player completes that season without being traded at deadline and goes to free agency the team that picks him up gives drafted team money and a compensatory draft pick.

I've only seen one NBA game and that was when they were still in Vancouver, we lost to a pretty bad GSW team featuring Clarence Weatherspoon and Muggsy Bogues. I feel like all the fans like Muggsy more than anyone on the Grizz, but I'll miss never being able to see them again. I always figure the only time I'll see another NBA game is if I were rich and the Raptors make the finals I'd fly across the country to see them, but I don't think the former is too likely as tickets will probably be like 1000+

I live in Vancouver and really hope the NBA comes back. Whenever we host an NBA preseason game the arena is sold out. Also unlike Key Arena our arena is full with modern amenities and it could easily be home to an NBA team. I think that having an NBA team in Vancouver again would be awesome because we would have instant rivalries with Portland, Memphis and perhaps one day even Seattle. If we do get an NBA back in Vancouver I hope that Memphis would be willing to rename their NBA team so we could bring the Grizzlies back to Vancouver. My suggestion is that Memphis renames their NBA team either the Rock or the Blues.

In the super connected age that we live in now we would be drawing fans from the Western half of Canada, at the least. The Toronto Raptors exhibition games that we get maybe twice a year or whatever are selling out. We also have a special college basketball event coming up with several NCAA div. 1 teams and the like that I predict will sell out as well.
