you need open real estate near by and a necessity for massive void covered space. seems pretty niche to me, only something for large scale art exhibits. there are few reasons why you'd need such a large empty space.

also im sure its very expensive to cover an entire facade with glass and have it then covered by a plastic sail skin half the time not even capitalizing on its crystal transparency. you cant even look out the windows to a clear view half the time.

@@ooDirtyMickoo You right. But you can’t deny the level of innovation this is. Yeah it’s essentially a giant crane taken from a port yard, but who would’ve guessed to integrate one of those with a building? I think it’s 8 years well spent developing something this cool.

"diller and scofidio", the firm responsible for the shed, is probably one of the most creative arch firms around. you should check out their "blur building." they actually made an entire building into a vapor cloud and had a water tasting bar on the roof. theyve always been innovative, clever, and funny. i was really only responding to it being niche. i doubt "the shed" is a building that "will be in other big cities as well." its pretty exceptional and only really applicable to this site context and program type.

What does it cost to move 'the shed' in and out. How much maintenance will it need. I assume it's better to leave it out stationary. I know a roofed football stadium with a moveable pitch. The idea was to play futbol on sundays and have other events during the week. The maintenance involved with regularly moving the pitch was such that they only use it in the summer and winter break periods... I reckon it might be the same with the Shed. If it will be used regularly, it is better to leave it out ...

Another cultural institution build amongst apartments starting at $4000 a month. Very nice, we have no money for affordable housing on and off Manhattan but we have money to build moveable buildings for the upper class.

@@Peichen01 but how would they do that? Isn't it the location that makes the rent so high, and not the large floorspace or the luxury materials used in the buildings? Because then the only way to make affordable housing is to make really small dwellings

ties pau I am talking about the event hall. The city could have easily require the developer to allocate more space to affordable housing by letting the developer build one more building there. The developer would still do it because they still make tons.

​@@BarManFesteiro i swear architects try to make things look scientific only for graphic representation and client manipulation. im sure the airflow and temp kind of work as shown in the diagram at 3:22, but if its just a graphic artist rendering and not a wholly accurate test with accurate temps and airflows thats really irritating.

This isn’t really a remarkable thing for humanity. It’s nice that America is finally getting good stuff, but this concept exists in other places, such as the Tachinebuta museum in Goshogawara, Aomori, Japan. The front of the building slides aside to let the giant floats be pulled out. Figure it out, America. We aren’t a 1st world nation who develops the latest concepts and inventions anymore.

Building, maintaining, operating and providing safety for a vehicle of that size so that you can make a theater go away and make a museum dark inside is not actually a great idea.

The design (moveable top) is a fault. They have used transparency material, so the public can enjoy the space even when the top has been moved to the closed position. The venue just needs to allow access to part of the ground floor. Problem solved! The ceiling of it is high(4 stories), it should be a nice space. This makes the move-able feature of the top redundant. The money can be recycled into making Arts (instead).

Hopefully it works well over the years without staggering maintenance costs. It looks like a gimmick. How well will this work in 200 years?

@@-hernandez685 with our current technology I don't think that is a good idea. In 50 years these buildings will be outdated and making them easy to assemble and disassemble as we please should be a better option. We don't live in the dark ages anymore, in 25 years we have progressed more than romans did in 500 years, when buildings were supposed to stand still for a long time.

Meist Syans We should build with nature instead of against it. We should consider the carbon footprint of our architecture. Despite our technology the passions, and physical needs of our species remain. I don’t think disposable architecture is the answer. But this kind of architecture is fun, shiny, and new. The Shed would definitely look great on Instagram 😃

@@-hernandez685 that's literally the point of making them easier to dissemble. Our technology will be much better in some decades. So now it'll be easier to modify them and make them more efficient, greener, with zero emissions or even carbon negative. Easier to recycle materials and stop digging and depleting so many resources.

Humidity in New York is crazy. It will destroy the building.

cool design, but the name got to go.. since it is a public space and it can be customized to any event and open to the public and better name like Our Space sounds better and more inviting than the shed... 'our' is a possessive term and would give visitors the feeling of it is theirs since their taxes paid for it

Seems absolutely pointless. Just make a building in that space and be done with it. It actually seems like a waste of space. They mention absolutely no reason for a need to conserve space for this design. The outside area isn't used for anything else.

Where is all this money coming from?

It may move with the power of one Prius engine, but I can only imagine the massive use of energy to design and fabricate such a senselessly complicated structure. This thing is going to look about as stupid as those amphibious cars from the 1950s in 25 years. Either make a building or a train, don’t make a building on giant train wheels. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Can't you think about the job opportunities and money this can bring to the city? People need to WORK, they don't need more charitable programs than they already have. I do think we should invest more in education for our children, so they don't end up as homeless. How is it that illegal people, who are +60 years old can find work and people who are on the streets, mostly citizens and young, can't get it together? If you really want to help people, do it, you don't need back your taxes. I am so glad they invested this money on culture rather than wasting it to a loss cause. I'll be glad to visit it and enjoy the shows one day, while you look at it with bitterness.

Job opportunities for elitist hipsters, if you wanna talk about opportunity lets talk about how much of a chance in life most homeless people had, none, that's how much. If you redistribute wealth, you redistribute opportunity, why not give it to those who had none, rather then to those who have had lots, these people could also contribute if they had a chance. Your only so defensive because you see there is some truth in what I say.

I've travel cities around this country and others. You know what I see in most homeless people? Cigars, joints, beer bottles. You know how many I've seen with a book? NONE. Libraries are free for all, I've only seen a homeless once there and you know what he was doing? Watching porn. Yes, there are a few homeless who are really in that situation for horrible and uncontrollable causes, but guess what? They take advantage of the so many free things and social programs cities already offer, stand up and get out of it. One of my professors went through it and advanced. We need to advance as a society. How do you want to live in a first world country, if you keep feeding this vicious circle? Whether you like it or not, as we advance, jobs will become more and more directed towards the "hipsters" you seem to despise, as the others become automatized. So either evolve or don't spread your hatred.

Do a search on KZread for "homeless experiment", watch some videos, homeless people I've met are some of the kindest people. The way you look down on them is disgusting, you don't see their potential, you just see them as a problem. The real problem is a growing class of "educated" elites who are taking more then their fair share of the public pie, a pie that is contributed to by the rest of us who are actually tax positive.

@@arkatub most of them might be nice to talk to, I didn't say they are murderers, rapers, or robbers. They are just to comfortable in that position, and are not self driven to overcome that stage. I know they are not bad, for example, in Denver's civic center they are having so much fun, passing joints, laughing and singing. However, it's very difficult to take someone out of it, if they are not willing to do it themselves. Why waste money? They already have opportunities as I said so many times. Do you want the easy way to become rich? Not gonna happen. I bet you've already been a host to a lot of them. Giving them some food, an opportunity to bath. Since you seem to look up so much to them. I'm sorry, but I won't feel pity for someone who grew up in this country and is not taking advantage of it. I know many people who actually grew in poor countries as adults. Hard for them to learn a very hard language, face racism, and still were able to buy their houses overtime and some of them now travel around as retirees. Note: I know not ALL homeless are like this, but let's not deny the majority are. Note 2: I do agree with having a better tax system. Wealthy becoming stupidly wealthier shouldn't happen. However, giving it to waste causes is not a better option.
