Judit Polgar was women’s chess champion for 25 years until she retired. She was the youngest grandmaster ever at 15. And was a Candidate for the men’s championship. I had mistakenly thought that the story was based on Judit’s life.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for culture to make women more interested in chess and other 'men hobbies' but the Queens gambit didn't really do it well. The protagonist is too much a 'mary sue', and she doesn't act like a smart person. More like an idiot savant, but with a normal IQ.. Naroditsky has the best chess channel btw, I agree.

I think the numbers are hard to argue with, but you are right in that it would have probably been even better if Beth were less of a Mary-Sue :)

@@CultureVultureMedia1 Oh yeah it definitely made chess more popular, no doubt about that, but with 'doing it well' I was referring to real passion, not mere popularity. Being seen as talented, intelligent, meeting hot dudes at chess tournaments.., etc. are all possible extrinsic motivations. The series didn't really portray intrinsic motivations for liking chess, or doing any other hobby of the same sort, other than as an escape. The beauty and delight of competence at a skilful task (& focussing on it to an obsessive degree) is what drives people to become really good at something, if they have the innate potential for it.

@@CultureVultureMedia1 yep, I love your videos, they are so awesome. So, I think this is the most perfect adaption of the source material, one of the best, if not ever. You have to understand, I fell in love with the series first abd I was pretty much still in love with Beth and the love she has for her game, I wanted more of her world. Book is well written and does a good job of filling up the blanks, and it was nice to stay in her for a while.

Your whole point about female representation confuses me. Especially the George Orwell part.

The show resulted in more girls trying out chess, it's pretty straightforward :) The 1984 reference was with regards to the motto of that chess café that wanted to "encourage chess to everyone, especially women", which sounds a lot like how the pigs in 1984 wanted all animals to be equal, but some more equal than others.

This show gives the layman the impression that women are good at chess. This is not the case

The people who made the show and Netflix as well is being sued, the pretty much took a womans life story without talking to her, the family, not giving credit or well money to them, they even used her real name... in fact the real woman was more impressive if I remember right.

The lawsuit is a Georgian Grandmaster who was wrongly cited as having never faced men in competitions. But neither the book nor the show is actually based on her :)

It is your narrow minded opinion that chess is portrayed as a game for geeks and old people.
