In my latest video breakdown, I wanted to see how the Patriots held Tyreek Hill to one of his worst games of the season. Was it scheme related? Was it a great defensive performance? Or was there something else going on? Additionally I discussed a little bit about the Super Bowl and if the Patriots will do the same thing to Brandin Cooks on Sunday. Enjoy!

Hill made one play and it basically got erased when Mahomes got sacked outside of field goal range. It was a classic Belichick "Your stars will not be allowed to beat us. Make your #3's beat us".

One of the main reasons why I think the Pat's will win this superbowl. Rams have a bunch of star power but no depth. Secondary and lbs will get exposed and Woods will get shutdown by Gilmore and then theyll probably do the same thing on Cooks as they did Hill. Pat's play super physical on both sides of the ball

shoopdawhoop Naaaw. McVay is multidimensional offensive thinker. I endured Big Red for many years as he couldn’t get over the hump against Pats and other really good teams to win the big one. History repeated itself w big red. I saw that loss in KC a mile ahead albeit credit to Mahomes who played great but the lack of zone running and knowing Belicheck taking away Hill was obvious strategy. McVay will use zone block/ run attack against the Pats and attack w short and med throws. It will be a good game!

This is a staple of belichicks defense. He’s always been known to take his number 2 corner and match him with the best wr (hill) and bracket him with the free safety. Meanwhile leaving his best cover corner on the number 2 wr. I’d imagine the chiefs new this going into the game. This isn’t anything new

Jonathan Jones who ran a 4.3 at the combine along with Devin McCourty who had an INT return vs the Bills this season clocked around sub 4.20s(in his 30s I would like to add) were both pivotal in this matchup. Reason why Duron Harmon played his season low in snaps in this game. Hill's one catch was against Crossen and that was it. People cry about double teams and try to take that away from a defense when in reality every Corner, Safety, and Linebacker gets "doubled" in coverage with the QB+WR working in sync with each other. Reason why Darrelle Revis's 2009 year was spectacular and have to give credit to that Jets scheme

For a defense that I didn't think was amazingly talented, the Patriots managed to shut the Chiefs down for a whole half and the Rams down for an entire game. Belichick is just a great coach and the players are well disciplined. Those are 2 incredibly potent offenses. As a Chiefs fan though I hope they can improve their defense enough to get over the hump.

At 2:51 Damien Williams was not wide open due to being covered by a Pats LB. He was wide open because the topside outside Chiefs WR made a completely illegal pick block against the Pats LB that was covering Damien Williams on that wheel route. Look at 2:51 of the vid!!! Chiefs used the EXACT same illegal pick play on the opposite side of the field twice in the 2nd half. One play resulted in a 40+ yard TD when their outside WR illegally picked the Pats slot corner who was trying to cover another wheel route (this time to the left of the Chiefs formation), and the other play resulted in a big nearly 40 yard gain down to the Pats 2 yard line that resulted in another KC TD. If all of the KC illegal pick plays on wheel routes were properly called that game would not have been remotely close. It would have been a blowout in fact.

Great analysis on the NE defense. If New England's defense comes up big and plays consistently good like they did against the Chiefs and the Chargers, they have a great shot winning on Sunday against the Rams. Different team means different game planning. Goff to me is so effective as a playaction QB. His offensive line is so good that he has all day to throw in the pocket. If Goff's offensive line ain't successful, Goff is more likely gonna have a problem playing under pressure for most snaps. Goff is gonna have to show up big to win this game. New England on the other hand, their defense needs to step up and play consistent football in order to win this game. Brady and the offense can't be saving them all day.

  • @namtrof01

    @namtrof01

My assumption, the patriots will look to do similar things as they did to that Kansas City oline and run a lot of stunts to confuse Goff. New England will come to fire early make Todd Gurley as useless as possible. If it’s not a running situation play action is just wasted motion

After watching this it is obvious the Patriots out coached the Chiefs. On EVERY play you showed the Pats defender played inside leverage on Hill which did not allow him to easily adjust his route to the inside of the field, where he is very dangerous. All it would have taken was to get Hill in motion on a different release or make sure Hill did more to get to the inside. This opens up much more of the field. The inside of the field from the hash marks was open to Hill all day long if they have designed different releases for him or made it an emphasis that he get better inside position on the DB that was in tight coverage. When you basically take away 70 percent of the field from a receiver, and bracket him, it is going to be hard for that receiver to make a big impact. All it would have taken was about five plays to see what the Patriots were doing and then adjust. As an example: Hills only catch came after he got to the inside on a post flag route and that opened up space to get to the outside. There other post flag route that was almost intercepted was another example. Why the Chiefs did not figure this out is hard to explain. The OBVIOUS game plan was to take away the intermediate middle of the field, use the sideline for help, and bracket him. Andy Reid gets fooled again. Amazing.

Imo this game was defined by the battle between Andy Reid's offense vs BBs defense. The pats didn't have the personnel to straight up outman the chiefs offense, but Belichicks signature is understanding the opposing offense and running a defense that focuses on taking away what it does best, forcing their opponents to either rely on players lower down the depth chart and moving to third and fourth reads or abandoning the original game plan to try and improv a way to scheme their stars open. Reid did call a great game too, specifically on the plays in your video we saw him figure out a route to beat the pats bracket of hill as well as multiple ways they used the Patriots coverage against them. Reid effectively called 2 TDs more than they scored, one on the wheel where kelce picked the LB and Hill ride the safety away leaving the rb all alone, and the other was the cover one but not really bc the fs is doubling hill beater route that came up short bc mahomes was pressured. It's telling that this game went to OT. Shows how great both of these HCs are, especially the way the matchup on that side of the ball ebbed and flowed throughout the game as both coaches diagnosed what the other was doing and made adjustments all the way down to the wire, ending regulation tied up. What a great game, and it'll be an even better one when they're the 1 and 2 seeds again next year and the chiefs have a DC worth his salt.

@@9Survive No No No...please don't spread ignorance. If you don't know what you're talking about then don't comment. Pick plays are allowed given they occur within a yard of the line of scrimmage. In this play Kelce doesn't even move upfield he simply pivots sideways to set a pick (legally). Rule 8, Section 5, Article 2 (Forward Pass, Backward Pass, Fumble) Prohibited Acts by both teams while the ball is in the air. Acts that are pass interference include, but are not limited to: (e) cutting off the path of an opponent by making contact with him, without playing the ball. HOWEVER Article 4 of the same rule states: "Other Prohibited Acts by the Offense. Blocking more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage by an offensive player prior to a pass being thrown is offensive pass interference."

If Brady missed such an open receiver people would be saying he is old and all done. Mahomes is very good but I have seen him turn over the ball multiple times in a game and no one says anything. I think again LA he turned it over 4 or 5 times. To bad he plays for Andy Reid more than likely he never win the big game.

With home field advantage, and with Hunt's dynamic running game, I don't see how Belichick would've defended our offense as easily as he did with only Hill to worry about. Plus, if Dee Ford lined up onside, we would've inevitably won after Brady's 3rd pick.

I have a feeling the patriots may employ this on Brandin Cooks, knowing that Bill knows his strengths and weaknesses. He’ll try to exploit it throughout the game. But i think it’ll just be Jonathan Jones covering him all game since he has the speed to match it and not have Chung or McCourty try to cover up Cooks like they did to Hill. I don’t think Cooks is as impactful as Hill in KC but i may be wrong. They both have similar skillsets

after watching this Hill could've killed them if is route running was a little more advanced in terms of "on the go" or freestyle type like AB or devontae Adams. Since all 3 of their QBs create extra time in pocket for wr to work and be creative... Tyreek could've killed them by making that extra cut to the sidelines. On multiple routes. He is just too fast agile and elusive. I think hill would benefit work ing with An since they are extremely similar in build and agility. AB does it all the time. Like players say AB runs his own routes. He adds an extra cut to create that seperation.

I know this is plenty late, but I wouldn't say the Chiefs have a good offensive line, especially on Mahome's blindside. Fisher and the smorgasbord of left guards really aren't anywhere near the level of Dr Duvernay-Tardif and Mitchell Schwartz. The majority of the Patriots successful pressures came from the left side of the line, and that's moreso Belichick recognizing a weakness the offense tried to compensate for rather than straight up beating a good position group.

This isn't anything new, teams have been doing this for a while against star receivers, just ask Julio Jones. The problem is it really isn't effective if the other team has good alternatives to throw to. The Patriots defensive line did a good job of putting pressure on Mahomes to force mistakes in the first half, but in the second it wasn't enough and the Chiefs had no trouble scoring without Hill having a direct impact. Other teams did this to the Chiefs earlier in the season, and it almost never worked.
