How The mediterranean Diet Improves Your Mood - What The Science Shows

Did you know that A healthy diet is associated with an approximately 30% reduction in the risk for depression and a 40% improvement in your thinking? There’s been a growing body of research showing an association between diet, inflammation and depression. Recently two Australian studies show that eating a Mediterranean style diet actually improved depression symptoms. That’s only two studies, so we have a ways to go to get to where we can rely on this as an official protocol. But even with what we have, the results are consistent enough to recommend this as an intervention for depression.
The diet is a modified Mediterranean diet, called the Medimod diet. You don’t count calories or keep up with points. Instead, you eat brain healthy foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, beans, fish and extra virgin olive oil. You also reduce or eliminate foods that are bad for the brain like refined cereals, fried and sugary foods, processed foods and refined flour like white bread,
What are processed foods?
Things like deli meats, crackers, cookies, and chips. You want to eat foods as close to their original state as possible. Foods close to their original state are called whole foods.
If you can’t tolerate gluten, you can still follow the diet but eat non-gluten containing grains. Gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley.
Some non-gluten containing whole grains are buckwheat, oats, millet, and rye. Whole wheat is the most common, but variety is important, so you want to try some of the other grains. Whole grain options for rice are brown or black rice. Other whole grains are couscous and quinoa. For pasta and bread, you want to look for 100% whole wheat or whole grain.
What makes this work?
We know that inflammation contributes to depression. Healthy diets are ¬anti-inflammatory, and are rich in B-vitamins and folate which is important for brain function. These nutrients improve neuroplasticity which improves depression. Neuroplasticity refers to the connections between the neurons. Tight connections are good because that’s what the nerves need to communicate with each other. Loose connections are bad because it makes it harder for the nerves to transfer messages between the cells.
How long does it take to work? In these studies, they didn’t retest the people until 3 months later. So we don’t know if people started to feel better sooner than that. But there have been other studies using the Mediterranean diet. Some of these studies show that your gut microbiome changes in just 2-3 weeks. What kind of bacteria you have in your gut, dictates the health of your gut. The health of your gut influences the health of your whole body including your brain. What we don’t know is the lag time between improved gut bacteria and improved mood.
Even if you don’t have depression, the Mediterranean diet is associated with decreased risk of stroke and heart attacks. You may need to adjust it to your special needs like if you are lactose intolerant or need to have low protein because of kidney disease. But the best part of this diet that works no matter how you need to modify it, is the reduction in processed food and sugar. Whether you eat Paleo or keto, eating whole foods can make a world of difference.

One of the toughest things as a kid when it comes to diet is you are usually eating what the family is serving. So if your family is not open to receive information about healthy changes that should be made and you can often be stuck. But I absolutely agree that this should be taught in schools and that everyone should have more information about eating a healthy diet.

I can vouch for this. I changed my diet and noticed, funny enough, about a 30% improvement in my mental state. I’ve been mostly consistent with my diet, exercise and sleep routines and feel like the effects have compounded and I generally feel better. And now when I notice my depression return, I just assess where I’ve fallen behind and can often trace my mood changes back to an unhealthy meal or skipping days of exercising. And when I do succumb to my symptoms, they don’t feel as intense and unshakable as before. Been doing this for about 2 years and I’ve also been consistently loosing weight, which is just another mood booster and motivator. I strongly recommend anyone with depression to consider changes in their lifestyle and be conscious of their intake and see what works best. You might unlock that willpower you didn’t know you had. Ps. This is just my experience, everyone is different, and in no way do I intend to belittle the struggle with mental health. Just wanted to share in hopes it can help someone else.

I can also vouch for this as it has been my story as well. I received multiple diagnoses about three months ago when I started a consistent (daily) training regimen. I'd already been eating quite healthily for the past three years and counting. I've also been studying neuroscience; the long-term benefits of exercise for the brain from Dr. Wendy Suzuki and I can completely attest to the increased neuroplasticity. My psychiatrist recently reduced my antidepressant dosage because I was tipping into a hypomanic state - I took this to mean that training and healthy balanced eating (which also helps in muscle recovery between training sessions) truly enhances mood. Today I tried on a dress I couldn't fit into last year that now fits perfectly. So there's that major confidence boost from witnessing the tangible results of my dedication to living well with mental illness. (NOTE: not "curing" myself of my mental illnesses or "losing weight"). My motto is: Do it for the endorphins, your mental health depends on it. Just like Joss, this is my current personal experience. I know how debilitating and incapacitating depression can get. I spent the last 8 years hiding symptoms because I was invalidated and shamed at age 15 when I first came out with depression. I never thought I'd get to where I am now; on medical treatment with a wonderful support system in friends and family. So be kind to yourselves and live well my friends. You are all beautiful and you matter no matter where you are on your journey. I am rooting for every single one of you.

Along with body aches/pains/intense itchiness/brain fog, horrible constipation, mood swings, hot flashes/night sweats, etc. I tried a carnivore way of eating and was a new person in 3 days. ❤️ Not everyone can digest fiber and/or thrives on this “heart healthy” diet. Unfortunately I’ve been a vegetarian and focusing on my diet since I was 16 and sadly I still struggle with depression 10 years later. It’s a good thing to focus on your diet in addition to medical treatment if you don’t see any improvements after years.

The problem with a vegetarian diet is plant protein only synthesizes 9 of our 22 amino acids. You need animal protein for the remaining 13. These acids, like GABA, are those which produce a sense of calm, for example. I'm not saying you don't have underlying causes for your depression, but you are missing a lot of essentials with your diet, which of course also affects your homes, which impacts your mental health.

Not being on any special diet after years of ED is what helped my depression. Not second-guessing every bite of food and feeling like a failure after a piece of cake. The first few weeks on a new diet can also come with a high and feeling of finally being in control of one's body, which looks a lot like getting better. I wonder if the studies took that into account and if they considered ED's as lurking variables. Mediterranean food (well, what diet culture calls "Mediterranean food" - if you've been to Greece, Italy etc, you know that's not how local people eat every day) is great on its own, I hope it works for those who rely on it for health reasons! As far as diets go, it is a bit less restrictive and easier to keep long-term. At least it allows fruit (thanks, keto, I want the last 5 years of my life back, please! :)).

Just in case others are like me, I found diet and healthy lifestyle options to be wonderful!!! In fact, they helped so much that I didn't even recognize my depression. In a way, they were a cover. I refused to recognize my traumatic childhood and how it was still affecting me or the toxic people from my childhood that were literally following me around the country as an adult. I continued to accept these things as normal and keep trying to "fix" myself with healthier choices. And the toxic people both celebrated this behavior because it confirmed that if anyone had a problem it was me and laughed at me for my obsession with perfect health and lifestyle. Now I am trying to find a balance. Eating healthy while realizing that it's not the full issue here.

When you ve spent enough time with toxic people especially as a child they begin to seem like the norm and you stop looking for healthy relationships in general. But it s not like you can't see where the toxicity begins.. my humble opinion. Diet wise.. noticed that for me it s the opposite. Always eat Mediterranean style diet due to being used to it after long diet plan and being Greek too lol and my depression wasnt any better. But noticed a bad mood would kill my appetite so thats a crappy cycle. Anyway.. reducing smoking, coffee to 1 cup and alcohol, instead having more water, better sleep pattern and avoiding certain people and situation did the trick for me! (ptsd induced depression symptoms). Best of luck in bettering your self and hope you feel better than when this comment was posted. A little advice.. get rid of those people and don't ever look back!

My mom calls me a health freak for eliminating sugar, seed oils and refined grains. I want to educate her on why but don't have sufficient knowledge at the top of my head for it to even persuade her. I don't think she'd buy it either way, she's too into her candy, chocolate and processed vegetarian food. Good for you for finding your balance and coming to terms with trauma! Things like cultural norms can really make you feel left out, enticing you to go eat that slice of cake or what have you (but i bet in your case it damaged apart of you, you were scared to explore). Imo, it's healthy to sustain and consist a dietary lifestyle that doesnt feel restrictive. I'm sharing bits of my experience here, It sounds like you've come from a place where healthier food choices were a distraction and more so a way of relief. So you became fixated on that, restricting you from what was really going on? Hope you're in a better position now!!

Depression can often come from abuse during childhood and no amount of health foods can rewrite the neurons in your brain that were being develop while you went through traumatic abuse. A lot of people do not realize traumatic experiences physically change the body through the nervous system. A healthy diet can only do so much. Eating healthy doesn't make you Happy. It just makes it easier for your body to create and transmit happy feelings.

I especially like how you give examples to explain concepts that can be hard to understand. I have battled depression since my early 20's. I am now in my early 50's. I am currently in a very low mood cycle and struggle with negative self talk. I know that exercise and eating right can help, my trouble is with motivation. I make lists in my mind and even keep a notebook of things I 'should' do to feel better. I am able to sustain a job because I can turn on a switch sort of speak, and mask my symptoms by pretending. But, the energy it takes to sustain this act exhausts me. I have no energy or desire to shop and prepare the right foods, or exercise. My interpersonal relationships suffer because I have no energy left to give. I just want to sleep, or I will research online all of the things that can help me recover, but never seem to follow through. I hope I am making sense? I am wondering if you can speak on the issue of motivation, or lack there of? Knowing what we should do, but finding it difficult to get there. Anything that can help. Thanks again.

Yeahh.... so I'm looking forward to my 'Mac Donald's Dinner' this evening Dr. Marks 😁 Thanks for the interesting video 😃🇳🇱

Its interesting, because I did an elimination diet ( was a strict vegetarian for years) but I was so desperate for help I decided to bring back meat, and cutting all my juicing out of my diet is what helped me. For whatever reason vegetables and grains make me very anxious, but high fat like ribeye and fatty fish only keeps my anxiety almost gone. I have wondered if the vegetables I was juicing, even though it said organic, may have been sprayed with something? If it was sprayed or had bad soil and I was juicing a 20 cups of it a day then that was a massive amount of chemicals I was ingesting

The depression you used as an example wasn’t really that great because some ppl experience deeper routed issues such as sexual abuse or death, tragedy etc. and those can create a depression that a diet won’t necessarily fix but i do agree that eating well can help make your body respond in a more positive way in many ways. I train in kickboxing and eat very well but dealing with a loss and now have a therapist because of depression from tragedy

Clinical depression requieres a lot of work, regardless of the cause. It is a medical disorder and needs to be treated as such. Here she focus on the diet but depression should be treated with medication (in some cases), psychotherapy, a good diet, healthy sleeping schedule and physical activities. It seems like you are doing a great job recovering from depression. It is really brave of you!! You and others can also find support in alternatives like meditation, mindfulness, spirituality to understand complicated concepts from a different perspective. It can be really healing. Sending you light, and good luck in your journey!

Yes, diet is extremely important! Going wfpb has really improved my health. However, getting to a healthy mental state isn’t just on diet alone. You have to work on your mind and emotions as well. Whether that’s through mindful meditation, CBT, or a combination of the two.

For most of my life I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety. I was neglected as a child and rarely taken to the doctor and never a psychiatrist or counselor, despite showing significant anxiety symptoms even in infancy. All my life I’ve been told that diet fixes everything and that drugs were poison. Finally in my mid 20’s I was able to be independent enough to seek medical attention. I was also at the lowest point in my depression. All those years of eating “whole foods” and “clean diets” never improved my symptoms at all. The only thing that helped at all was medication and cognitive behavioral therapy. Now I have an eating disorder and feel paralyzed by food and don’t enjoy eating. I feel like dieting with the promise of improving my mental health traumatized me. I feel like I was lied to all these years. I eat more processed foods nowadays thanks to my eating disorder (cooking is so overwhelming I have to eat premade foods) and I don’t claim that processed foods are healthy or good for me, but I’m also at the best place mental-health-wise that I’ve ever been. The real solution was finding the correct meds for me and years of therapy. I know that my case is anecdotal, but it sickens me to think about people suffering from mental illness putting all their faith in something that is not proven to significantly improve actual mental illness, in leu of real proven medical interventions. The diet industry is preying on people’s fears, and I’m extremely disappointed to hear this kind of thing coming from a medical professional. People trust you and take your advice to heart, you have a responsibility to them. AT LEAST add a disclaimer that this diet is not a replacement for medication and therapy.

Agreed. While diet is imperative for and indicative of health, mental health issues are physiological and cognitive. As much as these diet are important, seeing professionals in mental health care is important. Also persons suffering from IBD may not be able to consume vegetables and whole grains. It is informative, but I agree with the disclaimer.
