How The McLaren P1 Was Designed! Ep.7

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hi, everyone!
Welcome to the season finale of 'How I Designed...' It's been a pleasure to walk you through some of processes of design for a few of the cars I've had the privilege to be involved with. This episode we are sketching the McLaren P1. With this car, the main challenge was to take all of the success that McLaren had in racing and translate that into a brand. With the way that this car was, and still to this day is, received I feel like we did a great job.
Thanks for watching so far, please subscribe for more great content!
Thanks,
Frank

@@bobinpune I don't know if you're either little child around 6 years old or just a troll, the 430 is iconic just like the Maserati MC12 and Mini Cooper and Fiat 500. Pretty much every person understands how important the design of the P1 is too its performance, like the 918 and LaFerrari. Power without elegant design is meaningless to people with taste, a reason why the Bugatti chiron is such a popular car, it has both en masse. When you look at his portfolio you can see he did pretty much every type of car, small compact cars with retro design, SUVs and Supercars. All of his designs are still today considered very tasteful and successful designs.

I saw my first P1 in person on the 30th of November. I had wanted to see one for over 7 years since it first came out. The car in video games grew on me and it quickly became my lifetime dream car, the dream car I had never seen. I went to mclaren Dallas with a rumor there was a P1 on the floor, and it was under a cover. I stared at it for about 10 minutes while casually sipping a seltzer water and the guy who kinda runs the showroom floor said from behind me “I bet you wanna see it eh?” And then I told him I had never seen one in person. He put his phone call on hold and took the covers off of the car from the tail. It was the most beautiful car I have ever seen before, the carbon fiber was literally everywhere except the paint, a pretty metallic silver. I shed some tears, took some photos while he resumed his call, and helped him put the cover back on the car after I was done. He had shown me the mechanical locking mechanism and opened the door so I could look inside, the chassis number is 126. It’s a number that I can’t forget anymore. My favorite parts of the car are probably the scoop, the aggressive bonnet, the carbon door panels, the carbon door sills, the rear wing that was also in exposed carbon, headlights and taillights, and the fans behind the mesh in the rear of the car. The only cars I could even remotely compare to the P1 is the Huayra BC and BC Roadster, a purple carbon Huayra Roadster I saw (sadly it crashed last month and was completely totaled, still have a piece of that one), the Pagani Zonda Barchetta in blue carbon fiber, and honestly nothing else. The P1 and the Huayra BC Are both my favorite because of how unique they are, and their powerplants. Fairly, the Huayra has a very unique V12 while the P1 just has a V8, but I love the way the P1 looks, how futuristic its design is compared to the classic Huayra design. It’s more curvy and sharp than the Huayra is, being more boxy and squared off, yet still intricate throughout. Thank you, for designing such an incredible machine, I hope to own one someday. The one I saw was pending deposit and selling for just $1.4M. I can attain that by the time I’m 40 flying planes across the world. Take care, and again, thank you. It is a truly special car and always will be my favorite mclaren.

I gotta be honest here. I never really liked the new design language of McLaren, the P1 in particular. BUT after watching this video and seeing how much thought and spirit went into the design of this masterpiece, I actually started appreciating it a little more. Now, after spending hours watching videos about the P1, I actually come to like it. It's amazing how much of an impact the "making of" a car can have on a person's opinion about it!

Frank, thanks again for another beautiful exposition. I was a mechanic for years, and for the last 30 years I've been a violin maker. I love the idea of using the rules of mathematics and proportion, and learnt a lot about forms and geometry from Kevin Coates' excellent book Geometry, Proportion and the Art of Lutherie. 1.618 (the golden section) is also used to determine the musical scale, which of course is mind blowing!! (i.e the fret positions on a guitar etc are positioned in that proportion).

My favorite looking car of all time. Love the sleek cheek bone look in the door. The rear of the car, where most cars seem to lack, looks sleek and extraterrestrial. Not to mention the engineering, using internal combustion and electric in unison. Gorgeous work.

I love what he said about drawing on paper vs drawing on a computer. The p1 is a great example of a car that you can absolutely tell was drawn on paper - the the way the lines flow is impeccable.
