    It's simple enough, the old trucks had the aerodynamics of a large building. Fashion, and to a larger extent the desire to get the mileage into double figures, lead to a change in design.

I forgot what the model year is but I believe it’s mid 90’s, I’m always excited to see it because it reminds me of the tractors that I would see on the highways during my childhood in the 90’s, and he swears by it because it doesn’t have any of the DEF or other modern emissions crap that cause reliability and fuel efficiency issues… it’s a treat to see that ol girl still rumbling along.

    The improved visibility of cabovers is vastly over rated. You have a lot of blocked vision from cab posts and mirrors. You sit so high up in a cabover and are about 5 feet away from the front edge of your dash that you still have a big blind spot right in front of your truck. In tight areas you can climb over the steering wheel and gain some vision that way. The sloped aero hoods are the best vision beating both conventional and cabovers in my experience.

    It always amazes me how so many people are opposed to change. Anything different from "this is the way we always done it" gets putdown as an unnecessary change even if it's proven to be better overall. The only constant in life is change and because of increasing and far reaching technology change is happening at a much quicker pace.

  • @whotf888

    @whotf888

    I've come to the conclusion that a lot of people are hesistant when it comes to accepting change is because the promises surrounding the change often times are polar opposites of the actual effects of said changes. Take the post-2007 truck engines: we were promised that we will be able to do the same things and be environmentally friendly while doing so. In reality, the engines are prone to breakdowns, needing new parts (which have to be made somehow, the logistics of which already throw the "environmentally friendly" part out the window), causing downtime leading to small fleets, but more importantly owner operators going out of business, because they can't afford to replace new engines (sadly, this is often the case, quality control can be a little sketchy). A new X-15 Cummins costs about $30k, that's without paying the shop for the swap.

    As someone who loves trains, I am beginning to learn to appreciate trucking. Both the railroads and the trucking have been foes and friends since their inception, and oftentimes both have helped advance the technology that both forms of freight transport use. As well, the evolvement of both trucks and railway locomotives is quite similar; from fuel emissions to external looks to streamlining. Still, one thing that can be agreed upon is that the older model trucks and locomotives had a class all their own and even today many are still working dutifully alongside their more modern and eco-friendly brethren. Speaking of which, if anyone loves seeing clouds of exhaust exit the pipes of a truck, then you will LOVE an Alco locomotive. ;)

    The standard conventional is not done and a lot of applications need it. Take a look at the new Peterbilt 589. It still looks basically like a Pete 359, 379, 389. The edges have been rounded off and the windshield is curved, but still looks like a Peterbilt. The conventional Peterbilt has a far longer lifespan than the plastic trucks that so many are now. The plastic trucks have become a disposable truck like so many other things. A lot of the line haul companies buy new trucks, put a few miles on them, and dispose of them. There are still plenty of 1980's Peterbilt trucks with several millions of miles on them out on the road. That is called longevity. The Peterbilt can also be converted from a sleeper cab to a day cab. The long nose is safer for the driver and the engine is far easier to do maintenance because it is exposed when the hood is open.

    2:08 the picture with the two tan trucks is the most interesting to me. There is a tan gmc on the left and a lighter than on the right. The left one has the cab overhang on the front, putting the whole cab on and in front of the front wheel, giving more comfort to the driver over bumps. Just like european style trucks. The right pic is the one that remained popular in the usa as long as they offered cabovers. That design has no front overhang, but the driver sits ON the front wheels, resulting in worse comfort and less tall interior. The cab later expanded to the back which is reasonable, but still. Can someone tell me why they didng go with the left style, which allows even more space if you expand to the back, it can be built with suspended cab, air or regular springs and shocks and because its in front of the wheel, the floor of the cab can be placed lower than the top of the wheel, while on the right design you have the cab bolted to the chassis, driver sitting on wheel, and less tall cab interior. Can someone explain why? Please. Thanks, cheers

When the soot builds up, the DPF's backpressure increases, which can lead to a loss of power and fuel efficiency"

    All comments are true in a sense. My opinion though is that the older stuff was robust. Got an 85 f150 nearly 40 years old except for a rebuilt engine and needing a synchro for 3-4 it hardly ever gets put in the shop. Last time was nearly 3 years ago. I ain't sayin I want everything to be like it was in the 80s but using lighter materials often decrease overall quality. Bump into a truck in the 80s and other than a few scratches, you're good, now bump into one and that can cost 100s or 1000s in fender and bumper work.

    pretty inaccurate research in places, trucks don't travel especially fast and do so at a relatively steady speed so aero advantage is not imprtants, anything looking streamlined is just to be publically acceptable....the engine management and doing away with manual transmissions is the game changer on the efficiency front. BTW Caterpillar trucks closed down because there was issues with the particular emmissions system that was employed and the company didn't want to carry on developing it

The biggest contribution to greenhouse gases reduction has been agricultural practices and gmo’s pulling more greenhouse gases out of the for food then ever before see carbon credit sales for a better explanation

    If You are going to put out a so called informative video why don't You include that the new invasive government emissions have also shortened the life of an engine by better than 50% and the fact that the aerodynamics of cab designers were more because of the price of fuel than anything else, when I started driving in 1980 the price of fuel was. 37 cents per gallon and when I retired it was almost $5 per gallon, my first truck got 5 miles per gallon going down hill with a strong wind blowing on the trailer doors and my last truck was 22 years old and was getting 9.2 miles per gallon with 0 emissions on the truck, newer trucks are only getting half that with a life expectancy of between 500,000 miles and 750,000 miles mine went 1.8 million miles before it was overhauled.

    The end is pure bs. Modern trucks polute less in some categories but WAY more in others. Add to that increased maintenance (a LOT more), the replace vs repair mentality that fills landfills with more plastics and overall how the entire truck has to be scraped after 8 years vs the old ones that still run today. DEF is a disaster too. All the stuff that gets stuck in the cats, ends up in the water table in a landfill. Rich people didnt want it in their air, so they made sure it was in our water. And EV trucks are worse for cooling. Look at power tools and how often they will shut down. Batteries heat up fast. And old diesel will run in every climate on this planet, but the more emissions (dictated by idiot bureaucrats, not engineers) means that trucks need a lot more power to haul the same load. The big thing is Cat leaving road vehicles. They still make engines, for export, or for construction equipment, because they know that there is no solution to what the govt wants. How many Congressmen and Senators are invested in EV motor and battery mfgs in China? We dont know since the SEC wont look into that (but will check out a bank tellers second nephew over trading 2 shares), and the only thing we know is leaked stuff, but that gives a picture of why they push, and dictate to us plebs what we can and cant buy.
