How The LEGO Movie Led to Spider-Verse
Фильм және анимация
My Spider-Verse video is here: • How Spider-Verse Broke...
You asked for it, here’s my take on The LEGO Movie and how it changed the animation industry!
Join me as I dissect how The LEGO Movie revolutionized 3D animation, exploring pioneering techniques that set a new standard in the industry. I delve into the distinctive aesthetics of "The Lego Movie", highlighting its innovative use of dynamic character animation. Drawing parallels with "Spider-Verse", I explore how both movies challenged conventional norms and introduced a stylized animation vibe. I also discuss the theme of 'rising through failures' in the protagonist's journey, a narrative that resonates deeply with audiences. Finally, I reflect on the enduring legacy of "The Lego Movie" and its game-changing impact on animation.

Honestly, the main reason I went to see Into the Spider-Verse was because Phil Lord and Chris Miller were involved. As an avid lego fan I adored the movie they helped create and The Lego Movie was my favorite movie to watch (until Spider-Verse lol). I have little doubt that anything involving them will be nothing less than visually stunning and oozing endless creativity. I always enjoy learning more about what goes into the creation of these kinds of movies, it gives an even deeper appreciation. Thank you for the videos on these masterpieces, I am excited for more :D

Thank you so much! Yes, they really did the Lego franchise justice
The lego movie was literally my favorite childhood movie, i never knew the directors of the film were the same ones who directed spiderverse. It makes a lot of sense coming from the animation style. Also you should do a video speculating the new upcoming Ninja Turtles movie the animation is also inspired by spiderverse esthetic.

I don't think people give enough credit to the Lego Movie for single-handlily changing the animation industry. I mean you can argue that Spider-verse was the one that had the bigger impact but, the point I'm trying to get across here is that The Lego Movie walked so the Spiderverse could soar!
I would say the Lego Movie is more photorealistic than Pixar, because they look like actual Legos, not stylized humans.
Dude keep up the great work. Your videos are incredible. And about the Bad Guys, did you guys have any specific frames of reference or inspiration for the style of the film? It’s one of my favorite movies ever and thanks for sharing your insights as an animator.

Commenting so more people see this masterpiece. and the question bit. How did you get invited to work on it? With the number of sequels and remakes currently in Hollywood, people say that original stories are less profitable by companies. As you worked on Bad Guys, an original story, what do you think about this? What are you planning on working on in the future?
The lego movie yes. I have such emotional feelings about this movie and so calm that I could even describe, when I saw this movie in theaters, I don't know, it was something magical for me at the time. And the fact that this movie has taken the creation of the Spider-Verse to even greater heights is incredible. and the release of the first film in 2018 brought me a certain amount of happiness. because my life was starting to go downhill from 2018 until now I don't need to say the affection I have for creation
The Lego movie was my childhood. Having two of my favorite movies being made by the same people and both being loved and appreciated for what it’s done for animation just warms my heart!
Both are in my top favorite films

….. you’re not wrong
Both are animated masterpieces. Lord and Miller are true geniuses in animation and filmmaking
Yesss Lego Movie really pushed the boundaries for stylized 3D. It had been tried before, Flushed Away was animated on 2s to get a “stop motion” look, and Disney did a lot of CG on 2s in Fantasia 2000 (like the Steadfast Tin Soldier sequence) but those techniques were all kind of overshadowed by the smooth naturalistic style of animation you got from the more popular Pixar, Disney, and Dreamworks CG films. I’m definitely happy to see CG moving in a more stylized direction and being influenced by other mediums such as stop motion and hand drawn! It really gives the animation a unique look.
And this is why I love the Lego Movie. Not only was the story cool, it LOOKED AWESOME
Question for ur bad guys vid: what is the most interesting/impactful thing u learned while working on it? Could be about yourself or about animation as a whole or whatever u want to talk about.
Great breakdown. Look forward to more! I believe these movies were groundbreaking, and there’s a lot out there on these movies, so it’s nice to see some connections highlighted between them!
When rewatching the Lego Movie, I never realized that the movie was a lot like Spider-Verse.

It is good when characters fail, unlike Rey from Star Wars. I think this is a good storytelling technique that is in the majority of movies.
The influence of Alberto Mielgo was also crucial for the art style of into the spiderverse. he is also the animator behind "the witness" (Love, Death and Robots on Netflix)
I got to tell a short story about that shirt you're wearing. Two friends and I were looking at clothes on sale at a shop near our school. We all bought that same shirt three years ago cuz we thought it looked goofy af and it would be funny to come to school with all three of us wearing it. After that day it became a tradition for us to wear it every Friday throughout high school!

This is exactly something I’ve been saying for the longest time!! The Lego movie really was a game changer, and the first spiderverse used that and got to go even further with it. Heck, some of my work is in the new spiderverse movie thanks to lego scene being made by a kid in the community, a community that I helped create so I’m very proud of it all.
The lego movie is perfect, so funny, and so well crafted. I'm so HAPPY to hear you bringing attention to their amazing work and how they inspired this new era of animation.
Idk why, but I rewatched/want to rewatch all these movies several times. I was pretty obsessed with Legos when I was a bit younger, so that influenced it (I watched Lego Ninjago 8 times over and over before) I have watched Into the Spiderverse 5 times, because I was bored, too much free time, and it was just really good. I want to watch Across over and over for all the easter eggs, the music, aesthetic, and because I missed the first scene in theaters and am really miffed about it.
2014: Damn you Academy for not giving Lord and Miller’s masterpiece an Oscar! 2018: Ok, you’ve been redeemed…for now. 2023: We will see…

I’ve always felt the 2 films had a similar feeling to them despite their animation differences. Phil and Chris being involved in both helped but even just the feeling of the films. Spiderverse had some stop motion aspects to it as well that kinda reminded me of the Lego movie. Both movies I went in not expecting much, but as I’ve come to realize never underestimate Lord and Miller.

Unrelated to the BadGuys, but since most of Hollywood right now is going on strike, with the writers and actors guilds joining each-other, is there an animation/vfx artist union? I've heard about the unfortunate conditions movies like Across The Spiderverse and most modern Marvel movies are made in, i feel like you guys deserve way more :D
@NoTheRobot
Жыл бұрын
There is a subset of IATSE (largest union in Hollywood) called The Animation Guild aka TAG, but I believe it just protects American animation artists. There is some momentum building for a VFX union as well. But for the majority of animators outside the US, there is very little protection, unfortunately :(

How both led to a 14 year-old animating the lego sequence on sequel of spider-verse, that the title ever
You know, I don't know why there's no movie or show with ps3 cgi graphics, not with cartoony looking character, I'm talking about realistic looking character you see in cod 4, mcla, I can't think of anymore games to list

0:26 but Bionicle is Lego
i thought it would be something like "the LEGO movie is connected to spider-verse!" but ok
For a while i've wondered if there's another precursor to this new styles of animation that try to replicate traditional 2d animation techniques since about the same time the Lego Movie released, Guilty Gear Xrd also released, which also made waves thanks to their technical prowess and unique direction. If you haven't heard about the game, I feel like you'd love their talk "GuiltyGearXrd's Art Style : The X Factor Between 2D and 3D" -> /watch?v=yhGjCzxJV3E

Bionicle counts because it is lego.
Additionally, neither of these two movies seeks to be realistic. The Lego Movie is based off of stop motion Lego videos, and there’s the meta thing at the end where we learn the whole thing was being played out by a kid. Spider Verse is based off of comic books, and it directly addresses things like Hammerspace and Canon

Lego movie is better than spiderverse by a long shot so I could see why
Wonder what the next animation revolution will be. First stop motion did what it could, 2D seemed laughable at first, 3D opened up so many possibilities, and now they mixed them and imitated different styles. So what’s gonna blow the 2D/3D hybrid out of the water after we get bored of it
