How the Legend Began Scotty Nguyen's Unbelievable Poker Origin Story

There are a handful of true living legends in the poker world and in terms of charisma and entertainment value, Scotty Nguyen is right up there with the best of them. In this candid video video interview from the World Series of Poker Scotty opens up about the early days of his poker career. It all started when he emigrated to America from Vietnam in 1983 and worked as a busboy.
With too many people at home he was always looking for a fun way to pass the night. Enter poker. Scotty says he started playing Seven-Card Stud but went broke every single night. When he switched games, his fortunes turned around on the spot. Scotty says the staff at his restaurant treated him poorly and one day he go so fed up he collected his last paycheck for $270 and told the waiters that he quit, and that the next time they saw him they would kiss his ass.
Scotty took his money to Lake Tahoe where he crushed every poker game in sight. By the end of the week he had a six-figure poker bankroll. He returned to the restaurant, assembled the wait-staff and put $300 in front of each of them. Remember, this is the 1980s so $300 really meant something.
He then told if they kissed his ass all night they could keep the money. He then ordered six of everything on the menu, went out onto the street and collected some people to come in and eat. Legend.

Played with him in the $1500 8-Game event this year for about 3 hours. He was no different than this. Bagged for Day 2 with him at 2am. He signed my entry ticket (it was my first WSOP event). Got knocked out fairly early into Day 2, was walking out through the maze of tables and I hear "you out baby?" Looked down to my right and there was Scotty. "Sure am, Scotty." He smiled and said "it's all good, baby. You'll get it next time."

Met him at the Talking Stick in AZ. He played a woman's hand, looked at her cards and said "Go all in now. With those cards you have to." She went all in and lost. He reached into his pocket and gave her several hundred dollars covering her loss. Class!

Lol Question for you: The last name Nguyen seems to be prominent in alotta different countries in the phillipines and asis where they all speak completley different languages. Why is that? I had a really good friend who was cambodian and his last name was nguyen pronounced exactly like scotty’s last name and I also had a asian friend (i think he spoke cantonese) last name was nyguen. Im askin you because your last name is Nguyen too, Why/how Is that this last name is carried even through different ethnicities of people? Why was it so prominent? I may be wrong but its one of a few last names that Iv heard going across ethicities. There are so many different sub populations with that last name iand that last name is *SO* prominent too. (I dont count american last names because youl have black and white dudes with exact last names too , likely due to slavery or black ppl just picked and used random white names and completley dropped their african names (many did drop their african names, but not all african americans dropped them ) There are so many nguyens some vitenamise some Chinese some cambodian etc. So what do u know about the history of your last name ? Why is it so spread out (not looking for the smart ass answer, moreso does it carry the same meaning in different ethnicities? In cambodian, does nyguen mean the same thing as it does in vitenamese? What about mandarin, and cantonese?

@@effortlessawareness8778 It’s really long and complicated. I’ll make it as concise as possible. Back in the ancient times, above modern Vietnam, a portion of Southern China, there was a dynasty called Yuen. This is the origin of Nguyen. There was also a dynasty called Yuan which was established by the Mongolian ruler, which is different so don’t get mixed up. Yuen vs Yuan, different. Then Yuen dynasty fought wars and its territory borders changes over time and creeped down into where North Vietnam is today. Then they also fought the ancient civilizations such as Champa, SimLa, at what is South Vietnam today. So basically, the old Vietnam country moved from South China to South East Asia. Yuen dynasty was not 100% in power all the time. Clans come and go, some times the Tran clan takes over, some times Le clan takes over the ruling. Then here’s the important part of the story. At some point when Yuen clan regained the power, the clan went beserk and blood thirst. They hunted down and massacred a lot of other clans’ nobles and royalties. The entire nation went into shock. Everybody feared for their lives. The nobles and the royal families started to change their last name to Yuen to avoid troubles, then followed by the rest of the populations. Then it became a normal thing that people change their last name to Yuen to avoid troubles. Then fast forward to closer to the imperialism era, there was a Vietnamese catholic priest, a great scholar and studied abroad, created a brand new language system for Vietnam with the goal of increasing literacy rate for everyone with this new easy to learn language (easier when compared to Chinese Calligraphy). So certain words not only have its writing changed, but also pronunciation slightly changed such as Yuen becomes Nguyen. Also, Vietnam is very diverse, there’s a lot of Chinese and other ethnicities in Vietnam. Then there’s also a bunch of Vietnamese around the world because a lot of people fled the country after the Americans lost the Vietnam War. So whoever the male marries will have Nguyen as last name. That’s why.
