This video was the best video I found that clearly demonstrated the mechanics of the Kohler Valve cap. I discovered the contractor had installed the Valve cap upside down, and the orientation placed the limit stop for the hot water adjustment at the bottom. As others have shared when the cap is installed wrong; full Hot position was cold and full Cold position was Hot. When installing the new cap, inspect the O-rings for the valve cap and the water ports are present and not damaged. Also apply a light coat of silicon grease to the seals. The tiny capsule that is included is enough for the water ports.

Your video on installing the mixing cap and PBU was great. Thanks. So now I'm watching this one. My plumber who installed these in 2006 couldn't figure out how to get the cold to be a 7 o-'clock and the hot at 11 o'clock. So ever since then, the Kohler says "Hot" when it's cold and "cold" when it;'s hot. Stated another way: From off, the hottest water starts and it goes to colder and colder when the handle is in the position farthest from off. He was a great plumber who re-plumbed the entire house. But this stumped him. He even changed all the pipes thinking that was the problem. So the back shows pipes at lots of 90 degree angles. He moved away ten years ago. I wish i could tell him the key is that the cap was probably installed in an orientation that explains it the mix up. It's dripping now, Kohler is sending replacement mixer cap and PBU under warranty so this issue can be fixed when these parts are swapped. I'm surprised that this is a little known fact. I guess most people don't have this happen.

Superb video. I was having problems re-installiing the old Kohler valve for my freind who was moving and was taking the fancy shower kit she purchased with her. The mixing valve doesn't have an up or down indicator on it. Other brands do have that. This video helped me figure that out. I still have an issue though. I get cold, cold, cold, then hot. No warm. I took it back out again to make sure there wasn't any sort of contamination in the valve anywhere. But still have the same issue. What could cause this?

Make sure water is off to the shower and then try removing the mixing cap and also the Pressure Balancing Unit (PBU). Go back to water line, and turn on for 3 seconds, then off. Do again like this 2x. You are flushing the lines to clear possible debris. Now go back to your PBU, remove the o-rings, put silicone on them, re-install them. Do same for 3 o-rings on mixing cap. Reinstall everything. Test things out and hope it resolves your issues. If not, then you need a genuine Kohler replacement kit. Good luck. Let me know how it goes!!

Thank you for this, very helpful. However, in our shower there’s very little transition from warm to very very hot. So, it’s cold or luke warm from 6 until around 11, then it suddenly goes very very hot. This transition from warm to very hot occurs within just a few millimeters of the handle being moved. I’ve had 3 of these valves they all behave this way. House water temp set at 125. Any ideas?

Sorry... I haven't come across that problem. I would say that there is a restriction of some sort in the mixing valve but hard to believe it would happen to 3 valves. 🤷🏻‍♂

Thank you for the video. My problem is that the handle on my Kohler doesn't seem to be working properly. If I rotate all the way counterclockwise. the water gets scalding. Then, as I turn it back clockwise, the temperature won't change until it reaches a certain spot, and the water gets cold. Any suggestions?

Sorry... I'm not sure. My Kohler shower valve works in the opposite direction. We turn it clockwise to open. Cold at first and warmer as we keep turning clockwise. Then turn counter-clockwise to go back to cold and off. Here's a video on how I replaced the guts to stop a drip... kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6V-09Sgn7OXdtI.html

Hard to say without seeing the setup. Are the pipes exposed to afternoon sunlight? I’ve seen setups where afternoon sunlight heats the cold water pipes. 🤷🏻‍♂️

120F? Try 180F. Let me guess, your dishwasher detergent doesn't have chlorine or phosphates either. Totally gross.
