How the global cost-of-living crisis could affect Japan - BBC News

People globally are facing a cost-of-living crisis, but in Japan shoppers have been used to decades of stable or falling prices.
The country now faces rising prices, which is a big deal, partly because people's wages haven’t gone up since the 90s.
Japan hit its inflation target of 2% in April this year, almost a decade after it was set.
But with much of it driven by the global rise in prices, rather than consumer demand, many are questioning whether it is the kind of inflation the country needs.

Well it really isn’t as insane, given the fact that Japan is more of an isolated and absurde case in the world. Why raise wages, when prices stay stable due to the odd spending (and must save as much money as I can) behavior of the citizens. Japan has been trying to counter off its deflation for decades too. That being said, now that everything is becoming more expensive, it’s really going to be a big problem for them for sure.

Since 1990`s after Japan`s bubble economy was burst, Japan`s productivity has been levelled off. As a result, Japanese purchasing power has not changed at all for the past 30 years while other Asian countries have achieved great improvement of living standard. Compared with other Asian nations, Japanese standard of living has been on the decline, and many people are concerned that Japan could not be an economic superpower in the near future. So it`s quite crucial to improve labor productivity dramatically in order to keep Japan`s position as an economic giant.

it's demand and supply. Japan's economy is different, plenty of supply but not enough demand to meet those supply thus sellers have to pick up the cost in order to compete for the little consumers they have in the market. In the US, we're heavily consumption based economy where we just keep on borrowing to consume more and more each passing day, thus, our inflation is not only driven by global energy price crisis but also our own demand. With so much demand for more goods, retails can pass the cost to the consumers.

What an old way of thinking. Japan does not need to "produce more" to increase wages. What they need is to abolish once and for all, the male seniority based approach for higher wages, and increase global market focused innovation. With global market focused innovation you can produce less but have higher aggregated value, which leads to higher earnings.

The economy depends on the image people have. "A light car is enough" "Lunch is good with a raised bottom lunch of 500 yen" "House is small and cheap rental is okay" "Suit is cheap polyester and be patient" "Let's refrain from giving birth" When Everyone thinks about it, it becomes commonplace. The average cost of maintaining a living will go down. The salary is determined by social conventions, so the salary will eventually decrease. The salary of college graduates in the first year has hardly changed in the last 30 years. If you're a small company, you won't get out of it. The payer says, "You can live with a payment of 200,000 yen, right?"

Inflation 2% but for other countries it is higher , main reason Japan's transport system connectivity is mostly trains electric trains. So plz identify the reason for 2% it would be the dependency on crude , transport charges involved to get the raw materials to the factory.

My local street features heavily throughout this. I'd argue there's always an elephant in the room in Japan's case and that's the public debt. This idea that the nation is somehow "cocooned" from the outside world only comes by virtue of years and years of unprecedented quantitative easing, fast approaching 300% of GDP. It's to some extent irrelevant whether that debt is internal or external; the point is this mere "stagnation" for 20 years is an illusion: It ought to be much worse. While the world has been busy talking about Brexit and Trump, this has been a frog on a slow boil.

Carry cash as not all places take card. Be very careful about camera use, lots of places are uncomfortable with people filming and taking photos as its seen as an invasion of privacy. Finally, most of Japan is *extremely* safe but be wary about Roppongi, some people see foreigners as easy marks and rob them there, one of the few places you'll ever have issues.
