How the future of work is not “Jobs” | Rudy Karsan | TEDxCalgary

What do you get when you ask the founder of one of the world's most significant HR Firms about the future of work? A completely unintuitive answer that speaks to the revolution in the world of work and a passionate case for an idea whose time has come.
Rudy is passionate about creating jobs that matter. He revolutionized the global human resource space over 25 years through the KENEXA organization. He grew it to become one of the world’s most significant HR firms valued at over a billion dollars, and IBM recently acquired KENEXA in a record deal. He has gone on to found Karlani Capital, an operating fund that aims to “enable the growth and success of ideas that are original, interesting and potentially useful to people.” Actuary, NYTimes bestselling author, family man, uber entrepreneur. And they will be replaced by new jobs. Blacksmiths gave way to auto mechanics. Computers didn't really exist 50 years ago but now we have hardware and software technicians and engineers. Stun guns didn't exist 40 years ago but now there is a booming business making, fixing, selling and repairing them. The list goes on and on and there are all the things in the future that we don't know about that will make new jobs.

    It used to be that work was necessary for survival. In this situation, capable people who don’t work can truly be called parasites. In a society where jobs are dwindling, calling people who don’t work “parasites” is victim blaming. Once the fear of survival is eliminated, many can focus on their true calling and therefore will perform better at whatever they choose to pursue. Once money is no longer a factor in life, greed will diminish, planned obsolescence will no longer be a business model, products will be designed to last longer, pollution will naturally decrease.

    Great video. "We create work for ourselves" This is exactly what freedom is. Freedom is not about relaxing and doing nothing all day as some people may think if you get a basic income. Freedom is following a passion that gives meaning to your life. Not because you have to, but because you want to. I tackled an aspect of this subject in my new video: 3 hobbies everyone should have. I call work a hobby instead of a job.

    Being someone who's lived on social benefits for 20 years...... yet has also been working for not just my own benefit, but societies benefit too, throughout this time period. I applaud this speech and see the mentality of a guaranteed universal income a high priority. I used to present a community radio show, yet at the end of this show i did not even have the finances to buy a cup of coffee. I went out of my way to present a professional show for my community - for no pay. Yet my community couldn't present me with the human dignity of being able to buy a drink for my hard work. Hence i was financially/socially excluded from my community...... which caused greater damage to my health.

    Really Farmer, really?? You thought/believed that you were providing a professional show, but had the rest of the community/listening audience agreed you would have been sought after to upgrade from just a community show to something that someone wanted to advertise on. Your thoughts, your dreams would have propelled you to bigger and greater things on the radio. Since that didn't happen, then maybe the show didn't meet a need or maybe it wasn't as 'professional' as you believed it to be. Many of us work and then do something (like a community radio show, or handing food out to the poor, etc) on our off time; we feel that that is the way to give back to the community and mankind. Not sure why you've been on social benefits for 20 years but there are ways out of it. As I stated in another post (on this video) the problems with establishing a 'basic income' are HUGE to a point of impossible. The social benefits that we presently provide are there to help people when they need it, glad it was there to help you.

    I had reached a level of professionalism that was more than adequate for a financial payment, yet sadly commercial radio or the brainwashing BBC, are not interested in paying presenters to promote a message that they themselves would deem to be anti-establishment or anti-capitalism. Neither are they interested in promoting music that is expanding peoples' consciousness or merely prompting them to think outside the box. If you don't promote an image which they deem necessary to keep the general populace in a zombie/slave state then you won't be invited to become a social programmer within one of their select/snobbish social circles. The problems with establishing a "basic income" are not impossible at all. In fact i'm already two thirds of the way there, with my current social benefits money. All i need is an extra amount to lift me out of a situation which is currently undignified to the human spirit, and having a further detrimental effect on my overall health. If we want the sick to become better, and the physically disabled to find a niche placement within our society, then i suggest we give them an amount of money which doesn't prohibit them from participating within that society. Or in other words an amount of money that doesn't banish them to be financially housebound.

    Until the masses can understand the basic concept that people can have and can offer value beyond making profit for someone else, we're going to be stuck. At present, we're taking people doing valuable volunteer and community work, with skills, experience and knowledge, and we're forcing them into shitty, bottom rung, zero hour contracts....because we just can't bear the fact that they're not making money for someone at the top, instead 'merely' making lives better in their local area.

    Yes. There is much work that needs to be done, but it's not being done because it's not profitable for the elites. Schools need tutors and helpers but can't afford them. Hospitals and nursing homes need caregivers, but won't hire them because they eat into profits. The roads in my county are in terrible shape but the right wing government doesn't want to raise taxes on the rich to pay for repairs. My city can't afford an animal control officer. Our bridges are literally falling apart. We've got work that needs to be done and workers who don't have jobs. Any system that is unable or unwilling to pay those workers to do that work is a failure by any definition.

    I was on sickness benefit for a little while but rose out of actual sickness when I realised you can do some paid work without losing the extra cash. I used this as a springboard back into full time work. That's the way out of the trap in the UK. YMMV though as I'm a skilled professional with a master's degree and 15 years experience. If you only just graduated high school then you may be better off on welfare handouts than taking some awful badly paid degrading drudge work.

    sonfo hendrix - then look FOR meaningful work. Oh and BTW, it IS meaningful to the company that hired you to do the job, or they wouldn't have hired you. Look, most of us have done 'meaningless' jobs in our lifetime. I was a grocery clerk (full time) one of the things it taught me was I didn't want to be a grocery clerk for my career (although some people did do that). I waited on tables, I ran a wave soldering machine, I trimmed Christmas trees and the list goes on. Don't get hung up on whatever job you are presently in, especially if you know it's NOT what you want to do with your life. Look for the next experience, do something to enhance your ability to take the next step - oh and don't quit what you are doing until you have that next job.

    That's good advice. But actually if you think about it what most people want to do is either create something significant, or study, or play. That is the truth, the majority of people have jobs they don't like but that pays the bills.. Hopefully AI will mean we wont have to go to work just to do something we dont like in order to earn an income.. I personally would choose both creating things and studying/learning.. Things i can't do now unless the government had universal basic income.

  • @mmmarvel

    @mmmarvel

    sonof hendrix - So what is stopping you now from doing your creative stuff/studying and learning? If you (or I or anyone) WANTS to create something, then we FIND time to do it. Hey I like roasting my own coffee, I also roast for friends, but (obviously) I do it in my spare time/my free time. I study courses that are going to help me in my career, I've even been told that should I pass some tests there is a raise in it for me. Not sure about the 'majority of people have jobs they don't like'; yes some do, others (like myself) do NOT dread going to work every day, I like where I work and like what I do. Wasn't thrilled about running a wave soldering machine, but quickly figured out that wasn't a job that I wanted/liked and went about finding another one. UBI is just a crutch, too many people will complain that it doesn't give them enough money to ___ you fill in the blank.

  • @sonofhendrix1618

    @sonofhendrix1618

    I cannot afford to do courses, the only studying i can do is the free stuff which does not earn you a certificate or qualification. And where as i can find free time to do creative stuff, i meant in an ideal world, like being part of creating something very significant, like a huge project to create a mega-structure or something. Rich people and upper classes are the ones that can afford to study whatever they want because it does not matter if it does not lead to a job. UBI is not a crutch, its an enabler. But there will also be a lot of lazy, useless eaters and reprobates receiving UBI eventually, because the governments will have no choice at all in the matter. It will be UBI or violent riots and revolution. Because all the unskilled jobs, truck drivers, taxi drivers etc wont exist.

    We're doing jobs based on A) an old system, and B) out of habit. Making ends meet should not be a thing in the 21st century and something like a Basic Income should have been introduced 20 years ago to preemptively cope with the changing technological world. The old bleat of "Just get a job and you'll be ok" if false. There's no security in most jobs and the pay is too low to realistically live on, and when I say live I mean LIVE, not have basics covered. That just covers existence.

Resulting in a large section of the population unemployed. So, what do we do?

    There is something that is altogether missed in most speeches I hear about the structuring of societies. Until the core of this one problem is truly recognized and understood by the larger population - we are destined to experience the resulting pain. We need to understand what mental illness is behind fear based methods of control. Most systems use methods of revenge, vengeance, and condemnation. They ravenously seek to establish guilt to satisfy or quench a gruesome desire to destroy through punishments that are designed to torture rather than correct, restore or heal. These depraved ideas do not serve justice. If they were seen for what they actually do serve, there would be no such thing as prison, privately owned or otherwise. This illness is hidden in individual minds as well as collective. Minds have been conditioned in a way that obscures the real opportunities for intelligent, peaceful responses that form societal "norms." Until the roots of these insane ideas are exposed they will continue to make extremely imbalanced systems. These systems always promote pain through guilt, ignorance, fear and scarcity.

Advanced 3D Printers capable of building everything we want and need. We should be living in abundance free from 9-5 illogical mind numbing routines that a computer can do. I would argue the biggest threat of automation is perfection. Humans are not designed to exist in perfection, we need a purpose to keep on living, or we'll kill ourselves (or waste ourselves away, being essentially dead but still alive). If the world is perfect and all human problems are solves, there's noting left for us to do but sit around and be perfect. We would go crazy. What purpose we could potentially have is taking over the solar system/universe, which would keep us occupied, but robots could probably do that for us.

    The problem with UBI, as well as many other ideas from great minds, is assuming that those who receive such entitlements will use them to benefit themselves and those who depend upon them. Without a sense of "personal responsibility" there can be no success of anything given yet unearned. Alcoholism, drug addiction, child neglect, elder neglect, any and all human failures, will not improve with UBI. What happens when the benefit of UBI given is wasted by those that will not take responsibility for self and dependents. By what mechanism can government (or any other authority) insure that those given the blessing of UBI use the resource in a responsible way. Will failure to do so force those that cant, or won't, use it correctly onto the world as homeless and useless? What becomes of those that can't be convinced, nor coerced, into compliance to be a better race of human? What penalty?

  • @EvanCDavies
    @EvanCDavies7 жыл бұрын

    As a serial capitalist and economist, the idea of any government entitlements raises red flags. The threat of incentivizing people to NOT be contributing members of society is always there. I also believe in living in a society that doesn't leave a portion of its members in destitution and poverty unnecessarily. Exhibit A, the healthcare debates raging in American political circles. If we guarantee care to everyone, how will we ever be able to afford it? Government spending is already way out of control. If our system doesn't cover everyone, how many people is it acceptable to leave out? Who gets to decide? And can we justify the morality of that situation? Universal Basic Income I'm picturing as something akin to an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit would be extremely valuable as we move toward an economy that may require vast swathes of the workforce to be retrained. Farming went from 90% to 2% but it took 200+ years. This tech-caused shift in work could be just as drastic and happen during our lifetimes. I sometimes consider whether the degree I recently earned will be worth much of anything at all in 50 years...

I am freaking out doing meaningless jobs for somebody else... My father was an entrepreneur and he never worked for somebody else. And he had a phd. I couldn't understand at that time why he didn't choose a nice job working for somebody else. Now as I am a grown up, I can understand him.

    Rudy made some good observations, but when he mentioned "Universal Basic Income" he went off the deep end. The "Government" is supposed to provide everyone an income. Mind you, where is all this money going to come from? Who is going to decide how much anyone gets? What happens when the distribution of income is deemed "unfair"? How does a person get appointed the one who determines who gets an income and who doesn't? What if someone, or a group of people, happen to need more than what they are given? There are far too many questions than there are answers. This is a really bad idea that has not been thought through very well.

    Universal Public Income is fine but it's not a substitute for social programs. The one example of Universal Public Income I am aware of is the treaty payment system for American Indians. I haven't studied it and I'm sure there are a lot of things I don't know about it but my understanding is that the results of this system are troubling. There are going to be people who piss away their UPI check (like me probably, I'm terrible with money) and they're still going to need food, shelter, healthcare, consumer protection, legal representation, transportation, etc. and many of these things are going to be out of reach of even the responsible recipients without government social assistance, especially if something isn't done about the cost of urban housing. I agree that there aren't going to be enough meaningful jobs for everyone going forward and that distribution of resources, including labor and employment resources, needs to be rethought, but that's only part of the problem. We're going to have to figure out a way to involve, in progress-oriented society, those who can't get jobs so that folks can take pride in their roles and not turn to things like martyrdom to find purpose, and bs entrepreneurship will only satisfy a small chunk of the affected population. Government has the power to mobilize populations and probably will be tasked to do so at some point. Hopefully it won't be for war, but even getting everybody out into a field marching around in circles can give people a sense of pride and personal value if you make it competitive and you demand and reward excellence. If you tell people they can work up to four hours a day but they have to do four hours of competitive circle walking with no overtime allowed then that really tightens the labor market more than doubling the number of jobs available. Of course it will also annoy everyone who thinks they could do better in a system that doesn't circumvent the market and it does put the kind of burden on companies that will drive many to seek more pliable work forces but hey, you can't please everyone.

    In the middle ages most people has several income streams in their lives, most were subsistence farmers but not all. Some were artisans who also has a skill learnt from a master which they used to make money or swap things they could not make or do themselves, barter. There were very few single tasked or single source incomed people, even the rulers and religious has farms and land as a source for their food and material wealth.This was a source of reliability resilience in the face of adversity and uncertainty. Basic income for all provides a floor to support basic living costs for all in order to provide security and freedom from severe want for people in the face of mass job losses.

    Getting from where we are now to his idea of how we should be is slightly impossible without requiring everyone to work. Currently so many people are taking "entitlements" without contributing any work that we can barely stay afloat as a society. Forcing people to work would be called slavery. The solution is to let people take personal responsibility for their choices in life. Communities have always looked out for its own people and I believe we all still will if the government would just get out of the way.

    5 billion people added since I was born in 1960, all due to use of oil. Barely 1 billion existed prior to the petroleum age, which is also when electricity was figured out and perfected, still mostly generated by coal, natural gas, and nuclear. The progress made for many out of poverty has caused pollution and impending doom as per the man made climate change proponents. What if, what if the population today was same as 1960, as it is for European people only. Yes, yes, what a wonderful world it could have been.

    This is fascinating food for thought. If we distributed all our social program spending between people under the poverty line that would be 40,000 a person a year. I'm not saying we should do that, but we could feasibly eliminate poverty with a basic income and allow the free market to decide how exactly the poor get food and housing. I'm generally opposed to anything that sounds socialistic but with better automation this may be the best path.

    Troy Gardner the universal income COULD be made high enough for someone to CHOOSE what food and how much to purchase and whether to have insurance and how much and what kind, using the choices available in a FREE MARKET. A universal minimum income should be prevented from becoming YET ANOTHER failed communist or FAR left socialist nation. Capitalism is STILL the best system for innovation, freedom of choice, etc. It simply is too easily abused due to the INEVITABLE and self reinforcing concentration of wealth. But we should keep as many of the good parts of capitalism as we can...NOT CRONY CORPORATISM *AND NOT LITERAL WORSHIP OF THE RICH AS INHERENTLY SUPERIOR HUMANS,* which IS what we have now.

    You miss understand ethos of UBI. It is not 'welfare' as we know it ...a privilege but a universal citizen right which poor and rich alike will receive. Quite a few on the right support it coz it reduces gov size & meddling in economy through reduction of the 'welfare' bureaucracy. Open borders is another issue ...some studies indicate that open borders would actually ultimately benefit economies of inward-migration countries. but until states get their head around that border control would carry on as before. If it is successful in practice as in trials more and more countries will take it up so it will become less an issue. Also free movement within countries & between will even out regional, city/rural & inter-country disparity as well. A better world is possible.

    Basic income is a really bad idea. Basic income for where?? Let's say (I'm picking a number out of the air) that you could get food, shelter and utilities in Omaha, Nebraska for $1000 a month, so we set that as the 'basic income' number. Well, how far will $1000 a month go in San Fransisco, or Seattle, or New York City?? Let's say out of that $1000 a month you were suppose to be spending $300 a month on food (single person) which is $75 per week. But they say, the foods I want and like cost more than that $75 per week, you need to give me more. Or I don't like to cook, so I eat out as often as I can and the rest are pre-packaged foods (which are expensive) so you need to give me more money. Is internet and cable TV included? If not, why not and what happens when the costs of those two things go up? How about my cell phone? I want the latest and greatest iPhone, and a plan with unlimited talk, text and data; oh and it HAS to be on Verizon, I won't do any other carrier. I don't like taking the bus so are you giving me a car? Cause I certainly don't have money for car payments, oh and I'll need extra money for the gas.insurance and maintenance. Your 'basic' plan allows me (single person) to live in a 300 square foot apartment - well, that's WAY too small for me AND I don't like the part of town that it's located in, so you have to change all that. Are you seeing the problems??? Or is it just a 'feels good' idea??

    A universal basic income, whether a check, a series of product vouchers, or a combination of both is only part of the solution. In order to work it will have to be coupled with a dialing back of credit eliminating or at least greatly reducing permanent debt, and some kind of mechanism for people who are unable to participate in labor to find value in themselves without resorting to destructive behavior (this libertarian fantasy that everybody will invent marginally useful applications for a living is highly dismissive of human reality). Of the three the universal basic income will be the easiest to implement so we probably should get started but, golden age or not, we are in for a rough ride.
