What I’ve discovered is that many actors, athletes, musicians, and others at the top of their career aren’t that different from you and me. They have the same insecurities and flaws that we all deal with every day. In a dark, yet enlightening way...I find a lot of comfort in that. I invite you all to join me while I get inside each of these fascinating people.

You’d be write if their goal was simply to be famous. They were actors. They wanna act. And if you’re characterized in a certain way, you can get stuck playing the same thing or being ignored. Being successful isn’t fun if you don’t enjoy the things that are making you successful. The average person does jobs they don’t like for money. Artists take a huge risk trying to do something they love for a living. I can imagine it’s enormously frustrating to, against all odds, actually “make it” but it’s like some warped, limiting version of what you thought it would be.

He's right that it hurt most their careers. Emilio and Demi never really took a big hit but the rest of them had that label for years. Most of them were doing B movies and guest spots on shows in the 90s and 00s. Molly and Judd never really got to move on.

Most of them were never gonna have a hugely spotlighted career to begin with. The fact is they were a part of a zeitgeist moment in time and times change and that’s just the way it was. Now he’s bitching about being a millionaire with fame but boohoo it wasn’t enough. He’s delusional and entitled. Most actors fade away. The article didn’t nuke any of their careers. He just didn’t adapt to the landscape and you know 99% of actors don’t last longer than a moment in the spotlight.

Demi Moore moved past it. Molly Judd andrew probably just flamed out. Anthony micheal hall did more things still has a career in movies albeit smaller roles & did a show people love. Emilio had roles in the late 80s & 90s. I agree andrew wished his career was bigger. The other actors around the " brat pack " had much more success rdj jon cryer made a fortune on 2 1/2 men. Ally speedy did dissappear too but at least they had their time & did still get work. Acting is a tough profession to stay relevant in if u make it that far. Look at Marlon brando. He was uncastable for years & by the 90s became a joke. He was also a heavy set older man. James spader is another actor cast w/ brat packers who kept a good career going. I mean Val Kilmer was smart who stayed always away from teen dramas. I think that hurts a lot of actors. Winona ryder for a long time had a career but she got eclipsed by Jolie but her career is pretty much over. Andrew is one of those really cute young guys u just sorta know as he hits a certain age the cuteness is gone. Jason priestly was like that. Huge huge star in the 90s was freaking beautiful light hair blue eyes really cute but he couldn't go past 90210. Im glad in his book he realized he was a snob to leave after 9 years ( should have just stayed for the final 10th year ) & can embrace the show. I guess every actor is never happy unless they are in big films & nominated for oscars. Every genre is a stepping stone. Some are quite happy where they are. I'd say the most bitter are the ones stuck on soaps. Some are thrilled to have the job & sadly they get as much recognition as movie actors b/c it's a 5 Day a week all year medium. Sadly it's dying out. Many soap stars have said over the years they only used a soap as a step to prime time. Than u have prime time people mad they aren't in movies. For decades now it's funny how film actors got huge come backs & wealth doing tv. Rdj I keep saying b/c he was in a bunch of 80s films & w/ brat packers like molly andrew , hall had a major collapse after a serious career in his early 20s nominated for an Oscar than went to jail over & over for drugs than his first steps to a comeback was tv ally mcbeal while still making lower budget indie films then kept at it got sober got married a family & blew up as iron man & is like a billionaire from that whole mcu universe. So to hear andrew complaining about a movie career when he was so young is sad. Ok u hated being labeled in the brat pack. Most people don't even get that far. I know Chris reeve the late great admitted as well he was snobby about superman but actually became a huge fan of the films & the character that when he did smallville they were shocked by his knowledge of the comics. I feel the worst for the little child stars who literally are abused & wind up drug addicts in prison or dead or just vanish. I'll never get parents who put their little kids in show biz. Esp when they can't make that choice. Corey Feldman I believe him about abuse & others conformed his parents treated him as a working machine. Sean Astin said on the goonies Corey had nobody around him except handlers to get him to the set. Corey haim died at 29. Also abused. Drew barrymoore tatum oneal horrific childhoods. So in closing andrew embrace the brat pack u became a big star & people still love ur movies. Molly irks me too as w/ pretty in pink she forced an ending change b/c she as a person not as the character didn't want her character w/ jon cryer. Sounds like she tanked the ending as she said she was sick & miserable. Funny she was fine when they reshot it. I heard audiences didn't like it either but maybe she didn't sell it well ! Actors have some egos. At least brando said he only did acting b/c it's better than doing manual labor. Pacino said the same thing. Doing movies like insomnia or all over he Said how grateful he was that he was acting 1st class everything while seeing people working outside in freezing conditions or landscapers in 100 degree heat.

It didn’t hurt Demi Moores career because she was talented. She knew how to act and could carry a picture. She became one of the biggest movie stars of the 90s and survived the 80s brat pack label. Andrew McCarthy was never a very good actor. He was mannered and you could see him acting. He also admits himself that he was aloof on set and generally didn’t get along with fellow actors. That’s what hurt his career not being labeled a brat pack.

McCarthy’s entire premise behind his book & documentary hinges on casting & talent agents not knowing what they were doing from 1985 onward. Which is false. The town simply didn’t see him - and some of the others - as the best choice for various features. With some of the others, it was an issue of their attitudes toward peers & representatives. Michael Hall infamously alienated Stanley Kubrick, ffs... The cream rises, always. Robert Downey, Jr., Sean Penn, James Spader, Kevin Bacon, Matthew Modine, Demi Moore, even Brad Pitt (not the best actor), managed to navigate around supposedly deleterious press labels & work consistently, winning accolades along the way. McCarthy’s doing fine, by the way. Directs television & clearly remains in the public eye 40 years later. Others, like Michael Schoeffling, took the hint & left the business entirely, to his great credit.

I think he is putting too much attention on an article that used a catchy phrase to label a group of actors who were hot in some movies of the mid 1980’s. No one wants to be called a brat so I can see how it may have stayed with you for awhile but for 40 years? Now you sound a bit like you are whining. You can’t blame an article for the lack of film roles that followed. Careers take twists and turns in Hollywood. It is extremely difficult for an actor to make the A list and even more difficult to stay there for a long time. So I would argue the movie roles would not have been flowing in after awhile regardless of being called a brat pack. How long can you play young men and women in their early 20’s anyway? Some of the Brat Pack went onto cultivating successful careers. Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Jon Cryer…. Those actors have continued to work in popular television and movie roles. Some of the others not so much but that’s to be expected in a competitive and fickle industry. Don’t blame the label Brat Pack. Embrace it.
