How The Batman Reinvented Clayface

The Batman (2004) gave us one of the best adaptaions of clayface while also ripping off Two-face but in a unique and different way. I personaly have a soft spot for this show so I'm glad it won the poll. I will not lie getting this up on YT was hell as WB really doesn't like me.

So as you all can see the video effects on this video are crazy and all over the place. It was extremely frustrating having to do this to my video but I could not post it otherwise due to copyright. I will be looking into different ways to handle this for my next video which might mean more still images stock footage or gameplay. Thank you all for bearing with me through these growing pains.

The fourth season’s second half and the fifth season are kind of where my own interest dips; it’s not bad, but the focus and tone seemed to shift into the bigger role of Batman in this DCU he lives in… It’s shortly after Robin was introduced, and definitely after the future-based episode (definitely one of the show’s best); dropping Yin and Bennett completely was a key part of that. I wish Ellen got to appear even sporadically while we got to know Barbara, as well as Dick after her; same for a post-cure Ethan (who gets to have what Harvey Dent is never allowed, a wasted opportunity to not dive into).

The Batman has a Harley Quinn focused origin episode based entirely around a Dr. Phil parody, that alone makes it the funniest thing ever something I find interesting is that when the show ends up using Superman, its Supes who is portrayed as a loner that thinks he could do everything by himself which is a trait usually applied to Batman.

Man I love this version of Harley. It’s actually fits her “I’m smart (not)” persona that she had since inception much more. Origin as a show man shrink instead of professional one fixes my biggest problem with her.

Hot take: I think Ethan Clayface was overall a better version of Two Face. Same type of arc, but unlike Two Face his gimmick is versatile outside of one or two stories. Also, him ultimately reforming was a great ending.

This version of Clayface was introduction to the character and made me love Clayface. I like most of the people who have dawned the mantle of Clayface, but Ethan is and always will be my favorite. The man was cop who wanted to work with Batman to stop crime. His relationship with Bruce Wayne and Ellen Yin was some of my favorite moments from the first 2 seasons. And his fall from grace was so tragically beautiful. I also love how when he first tries to redeem himself, he doesn’t succeed and instead falls deeper towards rock bottom. But when he finally does redeem himself, I was so happy because I only saw THE 2-parter and didn’t get to watch the full show until 2020 when it came back on Netflix.

While I like how this show used the "Bat-Embargo" to creatively reinterpret Batman's villains, I still hate that DC thought us fans were too stupid to understand there could be characters in two mediums at once.

Yeah I like this version of Clayface because I believe he was meant to be this show’s Harvey Dent/Two Face like imagine if Spider-Man had a friend that isn’t Harry Osborn like have a friend that loyal to Peter unlike how it always goes. I kinda felt bad for Ethan after that ungrateful Chief of his and his first time turning into Clayface was the closest thing to body horror in the show.

You know he's the closest there's ever been to the Preston Payne Clayface, not counting that picture of him you see in Batman The Brave and The Bold. I actually hope it's that version of Clayface that might appear in a sequel The Batman film because he actually suits those films better than the shapeshifting Clayfaces.

Something I loved about the show was the art style, it was so different, but in a lot of places looked absolutely gorgeous. I really liked the Clayface arc, but to be honest, part of me wishes it had been given to Two-Face instead. They've never used the series format to tell a slow-burn story about Harvey's fall - and when they do, it's for a completely different character! But it still works incredibly well.

You're kind of wrong with what you said about how Bruce acts. Bruce usually has friends he interacts with & can be happy. The problem is he let's his duty as Batman usually controll his life. This version found a better way to BALANCE both sides to an extent. He still says Batman is his dominant side but he also finds time to out & be Bruce Wayne as his own person instead of masking Batman as Bruce

Indeed you went a but too flashing lights with the effects, might need to add a warning, just to be safe. I love Batman 2004 and Brave and The Bold, where my first introduction to Batman, and what i think the 2004 The Batman does beautifully, is showing us Bruce Wayne. This Bruce is on screen a lot, showing us that he has a life, and is as much of a character as Batman is, which is such a missed dynamic in the modern mediums. Ethan Bennett was a well written character as you expertly pointed out, and i wish there were more characters that interacted with both Batman and Bruce Wayne (hopefully not all of the tragedies)! I grew up with BTAS, and that's a great series... but tbh The Batman is probably my favorite Batman cartoon. This is a series I could talk about for hours. I don't like everything they did, especially with Poison Ivy, but the stuff that actually hits is some of the best and most creative stuff in the mythos imo. Like This is still my favorite Joker design. The way he moves is eerily hypnotic and I remember being inspired by that to create a villain in an old story that had a vary similar creepy sway to how he moved. And yes, this Clayface is great, easily my favorite of all the Clayfaces. Honestly, it wasn't til this video that I realized the series even lacked Two-Face. I just never really noticed it; there are some many other great villians in this series that its only natural that they couldn't use them all.

I'm going to be real with you. When I was a kid, I grew up watching reruns of the old 90s Batman TV show. It was my favorite thing to watch so when the new 2004 The Batman show came out, I was expecting to like it just as much. I did not like it; In fact, I hated it. The art style the voice of Batman him being a kid and not the aged more refined Bruce Wayne/Batman we all know. I really disliked it. Of course, I still watched it every Saturday morning because of one thing; Ethan Bennett. He was mysterious, interesting and I never quite knew where they were going with him. By the end of the first season, I wanted to know everything about him and luckily, they continued with his character. It got more depressing though but I'm sure you're saving that for another video. If I had a job, I would sign up for your Patreon in a heartbeat because I've been loving your videos but all I can do with it right now is like and subscribe and try to give a nice comment to boost your engagement.
