Milo of Croton was the greatest athlete of all time, any sport, any era. Legend has it he could break the fingers of his opponents whilst grappling with them. Along the same line, there's a story of him holding a pomegranate and challenging people to get it out of his hands without damaging it. Nobody ever succeeded, and the pomegranate was always unharmed. Fun fact: Pankration comes from the Greek "pan-" meaning all and "kratos" meaning angry video game protagonist.

Phayllos of Kroton, was a runner and a pentathlete from Kroton in Southern Italy from the late sixth and early fifth century. He won three victories at the Pythian games, twice in the pentathlon and once in the stadion. For these achievements he was honoured with a statue at Delphi. The Athenian comedy-writer Aristophanes mentions him twice as a runner, but his biggest talent was the long jump. Once he jumped 55 feet (16.3 m) and because the sandpit was only 50 feet (15.2 m) long, he landed outside the pit. This achievement soon became proverbial. This jump, one of the few from Antiquity of which the exact distance is known, forms an important argument in the discussion whether the Greek long jump was a single or a multiple jump. During the Greco-Persian war Phayllos was the only Greek from Southern Italy who took part in the sea-battle of Salamis (480 BC) with a ship. As he paid the equipment and crew of the ship out of his own pocket, he was clearly a very wealthy man. As a reward for this feat he received a statue on the akropolis of Athens. The inscription on the statue base has been preserved. One century and a half later Alexander the Great sent part of the treasures he had seized in Persia to Kroton in order to honour the only Greek from Magna Graecia who partecipated in the Greco-Persian Wars.

The Olympic games were a wonderful invention of the Greek. Not only they strengthened the unity of people with different social status. The competing aspect gives the human a meaning in his life. Great video as always! Some famous Ancient Olympic Winners. Diagoras from the island of Rhodes: perhaps the greatest boxer of the ancient times, was called "ευθύμαχος", because he never moved his head while he was receiving the hits. Theagenis from the island of Thasos, one of the greatest wrestlers of the ancient times, when he was a teenager he moved a huge statue of Artemis with his bare hands. Milon from Kroton (Southern Italy), one of the greatest winners of Pagkratio, the ancient Greeks said that his strength was similar to Heracles's. Failos from Kroton, one of the greatest ancient athletes in long jump, it was said that "υπερέβη τα εσκαμμένα", i.e. his jump surpass the pit. Failos he was the only Greek from Southern Italy who partecipated with his ship at the Battle of Salamis against the Persians (480 b.C), for this reason, Kroton, his birth city, was honoured by Alexander the Great, after the Battle of Gaugamela.

My take on the "women cannot enter": single women could enter because (at least theoretically...) they would not know how men looked, so they could look at these and wish for one like them. _Married women_ , otoh, knew men... and would go "ooo why can't my husband be like that?!". So the married men, worried, banned them. :D
