How Talking About Your Goals is (secretly) Destroying Your Success

We all like to tell everyone about our ambitious plans to build successful companies and take over the world. But does talking about it really do anything? Does anyone care?

I suck at personal stuff I want to do, but I realized I'm decent at school, because that's my first priority. It's not that I'm smarter, but people sees it like that, I'd say I'm just dedicated to it. I have high grades, so people always wants to work with me, and sometimes recieve compliments. Never pretended or bragged about being good, or told I was gonna do well. Let's keep it this way. Hope my comment didn't sound bad

Right? And the worst part is that you get into a spiral of not doing what you actually want or need. You just get addicted to the feeling of being validated so you do what you think others find impressive instead of making a difference in your life. It is like Dale Carnegie, but you are the tragic mediocre person always looking to boost your ego, who is so easy to manipulate because you are wanting the praise of others more than anything else. God I can see why I failed so much this year, can you believe it, I fantasized about success more with how others would respect me than with how my life would be more enjoyable.

@@Tre3141 Well I mean the important thing is you've become aware of it man. You can't change what you don't acknowledge. And of course, consciously or subconsciously, some part of us is always going to yearn the approval of others because we are sociable creatures by nature. I hope you define your own success and make it man, all the best!

@@DamjanManevski Thanks, Yeah, I am realizing lately that I find no joy in the things that used to mean success to me. Basically I have no outcome or end that excites me, an existential crisis? Anyways my parents are pushing me to go to college and start the 9-5 career, but in reality I suck at that life and hate it. I think approval from others is a coping mechanism, even if we don't like ourselves we can deal with it if others approve. The problem is that literally no one cares about my goals, aspirations or dreams a tenth as much as I should, so leaning on others to measure my success is always going to lead to negative feedback, they don't care. Like he said, be secretly a badass and if recognition comes take it, but don't fake it or you loose all respect for yourself and from others.

@First you are extremely right here. I'm experimenting with the oppose theory which is telling my incoming life plans with most of people who close and who I know well, so apparently their interest and curiosity helps to increase my motivation and energy levels. However this way is a bit extreme, in case you don't fulfill most of plans which you have told to others, it could backlash the negativity towards you by close people and will minimize your next new plans untrustworthy for others as you talked much and did less. BUT!!! If you tell your plans and do it as you describe, it will bring social positivity among close people and sufficiently increases your trustworthiness which is very important part of being human.

This also works really well to stay true to what you really want and just don't tell everything what is coming on your path. Because sometimes you just need to think about it and you realise you have to say no to it.. but when you already told people they are like 'Oh I thought you wanted to start with this and this' and it looks like you 'failed' but in fact you just said no what can also be a good thing. So it feels good to keep things for myself so I can make a good decision without people interfering.

The only reason i ain't achieving all my goals, is because i have 46 of the fuckers and i have to pick and choose which ones i want. Half the time, most of them conflict with each other. Can't achieve my car goals because i have investment goals. Can't achieve my investment goals until i achieve my financial goals. Couldn't stop smoking unless i stop drinking. Can't lose weight because I'm busy living my now smoke free life which has only happened because i gave up the drinking this year and don't want to hinder my willpower. Can't achieve my business/entrepreneur goals until i develop a few key areas in my life. Do you know how frustrating it is to be ambitious but have to start from literally a shit situation (if not physically then mentally)? I need everything done yesterday, but shit takes too fucking long. Even developing my work ethic is taking too long. At this rate, idk how I'll develop an 80 hour work ethic before the end of the year. Only get paid for 40 hours a week but already consistently put in 50. Then there's all the reading, then the stupid hobbies i wanted for myself which now I'll need to get rid of to make room for the other goals. Nobody is ambitious. All my mates fucking dream but can't pick up a book to learn, or can't fucking put in any hard work on business projects because it's not "paid". I can relate from my own experience. After talking too much and achieving nothing (or at least I did achieve some things but at a very slow rate) I felt like a loser because I couldn't catch up to all these talk to talk ambitions. The recognition you get from people when you talk about your ambitions is really dangerous because it gives your that small dopamine rush without putting the work. It's like jerkin off while watching porn instead of having an intimate relationship with a real person. Now, I've become so silent that I always avoid talking about myself and I always act like I do nothing in my days. But people notice the changes. They will notice your bigger muscles, your new stylish clothes, your fat wallet etc...And it's even funnier to see their reactions when they see you achieve things while "in their mind" you're just scratching your balls all day xD Trust me it's far better than the "okay dude it's cool that you're planning on doing X thing"

I wish you had included the negative neurological/psychological aspect of this matter, instead of just ranting about how people who do this suck. What happens in your brain when you talk-- or even think excessively-- about your goals is that your brain releases dopamine as though its already doing it because you're going about doing it in your head, getting amped up about it and getting approval from others.. but then once its time to actually do it, that same capability to produce dopamine is decreased because your brain thinks you've already done it because you thought about it and talked about it a bunch, so then its that much harder to actually do because you spent your neural resources just thinking and talking about it instead. That's why most people who talk ad nauseam about what they're going to do don't actually do it. Yes, talking about your goals literally does ruin them, but I didn't hear you explain HOW anywhere in this video.

I know I'm a little late to share my thoughts about this video but, here is my point of view. I do talk about my objectives to others, because it forces me to reach them. Whenever I have an idea, if I keep it quiet, I'll forget about it after a while. But when I talk about it, I have to do it because everyone is expecting me to make it. And people trust me, because when I say that I'll do something, I always do it. Also, it allows me to see what others think about my project, get some feedback. That's why I'm acting this way. I know that I don't have to prove you that I'm doing the right thing but still, I wanted to share a different opinion with you on this matter. Still, nice video my friend ! Stay safe !

I have a personal story about this exact thing, probably about 7 years ago I decided I wanted to run a marathon and so I got a beginners program, started running and started talking about it. While I was training it was taking up a good bit of time so I ended up of telling everyone I was running one. Unfortunately I got injured a few weeks before the race to the point where walking was very painful. So I missed the race and for multiple months every conversation I had people asked me how the race went which made me feel worse every time I got asked that. So the next year on the tail end of my injury I started training again except this time I didn’t tell a single person. I just ran and honestly it was nice, my roommate eventually figured it out because he saw me walking out the door in running gear for hours at a time and I even waited till a few days before the race when I 100% knew I was running before I told my mom so she could come watch since she didn’t get to watch the year before.

I already noticed talking about my goals ruins them. No one wants me to be “higher” than them because they KNOW I will succeed. Every single person I know puts me down about everything because they are mad they don’t have the commitment that I have and they try to destroy it. For years and years I’ve let people win. I’ve helped them in countless ways to bring them up and they say they are there for me but they aren’t. Those exact people would tell me to stop letting people take advantage of me. THOSE SAME PEOPLE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ME WOULD TELL ME TO STOP LETTING PEOPLE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ME!! It’s time for me to let things go and work on myself. Almost four weeks into eating healthy and exercising and I am feeling amazing. I will never stop working on myself. I am turning 27 years old on the 24th of October and I haven’t done anything in my life but cater to everyone’s needs and then get shot in the face. It’s my turn. Never looking back.

I know right! Spot on.. this is what I always felt like. Also with people who post their goals on social media about their weightloss goals, just go and fucking do it! Forget about social media and workout for you, not for the validation/likes.. you just gonna sabotage your own goals/fail because in the end you're not doing it for you and that's the only way to succeed🙏

I don't usually comment videos but this one is extremely good! I always feel the urge to tell others about my ambitions and I realize everyone is like that. Today's world is all about appareance, right, we talk a lot but very few take actions. I'm now setting one new good habit: watch this video every monday morning!

Great video. Sometimes talking about goals make people feel inferior or make them jealous. It's a bad thing for me cause then I want that hate to go away but is not in my control.

I love this. I had a recent experience with a very close friend of mine, basically giving a patronizing comment of saying how, "don't you feel behind on life, since your main job isn't consistent?" (AKA because of Covid), and proceeded to say, "if I were you, I would feel so depressed, and feel like my life isn't going anywhere." - and she had just gotten a promotion in her field, which as a friend, I’m obviously very happy for her. But it seemed like she was genuinely trying to put me down. I have started my own online shop this year, and have made a significant amount of money for something that I am sooo passionate, proud and excited for. I hardly ever share news about my behind the scenes work though, with her especially because she has never shown interest in it (which is fine, I'm not expecting her or anyone to, since it's my life). & A lot of our friendship is based on her talking, (which I am happy to listen to), and me listening. So she usually tells A LOT of details of her life, where I am extremely private, and only share what I feel comfortable with. It still hurts to know that someone so close to you isn't supportive of your dreams, but I have come to realize that my success truly is a personal thing, and my goals are not shouted to the world - but they are still very real and true, and you have to be proud of that. Silence is truly key.
