    Thanks again for those who joined us for the livestream. For those just catching up - since our talk 18 hours ago, China has started two days of military drills around the island as "punishment" for what it calls "separatist acts" following the inauguration of the new Taiwanese president, Lai Ching-te. The story continues to develop!

    Thanks for the update and in depth stories/chat I really like these interactive formats. Good to see you and Clifford and the others joining the table! I'll see if I can catch it live next time. It's funny how this topic of Taiwan being a country or not still continues. You'd imagine by now there'd be some more clear cut definitions as to what defines a country so we wouldn't have these silly arguments. Some countries can decide on their own to recognise a country or not shows that the world has a long way to cooperate well with each other. In some way the fact that there are no very clear rules to when we can start calling a country as a country might be an issue in and of itself

    PRC never set foot on Taiwan. This is PROOF that ROC in Taiwan has always been separate and independent from the PRC. Mao failed twice to invade Taiwan. Our victories in Kinmen already solidified Taiwan’s separation & independence from the PRC.

    What is clear in the "Taiwanese constitution" is that Taiwan is the administrative province (with the capital city in Taipei) of the country REPUBLIC OF CHINA (ROC) that claims sovereignty over the whole of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Tibet, and the "11 dash lines" of South China Sea, as well as various claims in the East China Sea including the Senkaku Islands/Diaoyudao, whole of Yellow Sea, etc. Until Taiwan formally changes its constitution and declares independence, the "Taiwan problem" is indeed an internal affair of China between the CCP (in China that is the de jure government of the day) and the Taiwanese government (in Taiwan that is the government-in-exile). The current framing and narrative in the West is disingenuous, and is subverting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China be it interpreted from the perspective of China/CCP or Taiwan.

    The "One China Policy" is a diplomatic acknowledgment by countries that there is only one Chinese government. This policy asserts that the People's Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government of China, and that Taiwan is a part of China. In the context of the United Nations, the One China Policy is reflected in the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted on October 25, 1971. This resolution recognized the PRC as "the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations" and expelled the representatives of the Republic of China (ROC), which is the government based in Taiwan, from the UN. This resolution effectively transferred the UN seat from the ROC to the PRC.

    Everything you said here are wrong: (1) policy means it can be changed or modified as needed, (2) USA and most it’s democratic allies who also adapt “one China policy” do acknowledge there,s only one China, however, they asserted that Taiwan is not part of China (though they “acknowledge” that China has claimed that Taiwan is part of China) Anyone who master English must know the difference between “acknowledge” vs. “agree”or “accept.” (3) UN assembly 2758 resolution only dealt with the question which government should represent the mainland China, it said absolutely nothing about Taiwan’s legal status at all( USA and it’s allies specifically brought this issue to secretary of UN that they totally reject his interpretations of 2758 resolution. Since then, US government repeated it’s position on this matter, (4) PRC ‘s ownership of it spot in UN has absolutely nothing to do with Taiwan’ legal state as an independent country.

  • @josephligocki7171

    @josephligocki7171

    28 күн бұрын

    I should also emphasize that people need to understand the difference between “one China principle” (which PRC has tried very hard to impose on all countries) vs “one China policy” (which USA leads the free world adapt). The latter means that the country which adapt the “one China policy” accepts the fact there’s only one China but it doesn’t accept that Taiwan is part of China. Meantime the country also take a position not to recognize Taiwan (also known as Republic of China, ROC) as an independent country. That being said. More than 145 countries in the world not only accept Taiwan’s passport but also grants its passport holder to enter their countries without visa. Most people who doesn’t follow Taiwan-China conflict closely won’t have noticed the difference between “one China policy” vs. “one China principle.”

    We should avoid referring to the government in charge of the mainland as “China”, and instead refer to it as the “PRC”. As a technical matter, as long as most countries have agreed to the “One China” policy, we need to distinguish between China the nation and the PRC the state. A state is the governing authority and the reality is that there are two states, the PRC and the ROC, that govern two different areas of China. It matters not how many countries recognize the ROC and have diplomatic relationship. The reality is that the nation-state of the Republic of China exists. Whether we recognize it or not, there are two states just like there was an East and West Germany, and even now there is North Korea and South Korea. The only difference is the magnitude of the imbalance between the size of the two states. Obviously the PRC is in control over the mainland, and the ROC governs the island of Taiwan. The US agreed that ROC is part of China, but it did not say that it is part of the PRC. Read the agreement and you will find nothing that says that the ROC is part of the PRC. The US agreed to move the diplomatic relationship to the PRC because the reality is that the government in Beijing is in control of the mainland. However obviously this move does not erase the existence of the ROC. The PRC never governed the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan was part of the Chinese Empire under the Ching Dynasty until China became the Republic of China. Today, Taiwan remains under the government of the Republic of China. It is the PRC, the Communist government in Beijing that refuses to end the civil war against the Republic of China. Let’s be clear that an “independent” Taiwan means that it becomes the Republic of Taiwan and makes no claim to any other part of China. The Republic of China is already an independent nation-state. The U.S. position is that these two states should find a way to unify peacefully, and it opposes any effort to force the Chinese people living in the island of Taiwan to come under the authority of the Communist Party. Since the ROC has become a democracy, it becomes a moral question on whether other democracies should tolerate the extinguishing of a flourishing Chinese democracy.

    The One China Policy is significant in international relations, particularly because it influences how countries and international organizations interact with Taiwan. Most countries, including the United States and members of the European Union, adhere to the One China Policy, refraining from establishing official diplomatic relations with Taiwan while maintaining unofficial ties. In summary, the One China Policy within the United Nations framework means recognizing the PRC as the sole legal government of China, which affects Taiwan's participation and representation in international organizations.

With such a critical topic (that people think they know, but in reality very few westerners actually know the background on) - starting with a baseline would make a lot of sense. Bringing in random videos w/o any background is also not helpful. One of the many examples is the randon video & mention of the sunflower movement. It was a critical point and major shift in Taiwan's society and it's approach towards PRC - dont mention it and show 5 images on it if you then do not take the time to explain it. With so many contributers, this program could have been so much better, if only ut had structure and direction.
