Sweden is nowadays known as a bit of a paradise. 400 years ago it was a frozen hellhole where the poor locals sustained themselves on bark bread. Yet somehow, this barbarian country of just a million inhabitants was able to smack in the teeth of its much larger neighbors, and make itself known on a global stage. There was a time when the fate of Europe rested in Swedish hands. But how? In this video we will explore the systems that enabled Sweden's explosive rise to power.

This far north the winter part is extremely dark and daylight rare, on the flipside the summers are bright well into nighttime. Seasonal depression is definitely an issue in northern Europe 😅
Digging the new presentation! That troll had me laughing! I kept rewinding to see if it wasn’t me seeing things lol

Welcome lad
What a fascinating and rich history! As a young lad i never knew much more about Swedish history other than some books i read about Vikings.
Didn't realize we walked Poland so back
I am sceptical of the 15th century wars of liberation. For example, at battle of Brunkebergstog, the Uppland yeomen supported the Danes. It looks more like the Hansa supporting rebellions against Denmark. Scandinavia had two chances to become unified. In 14 century under Denmark. And more brutally under Charles X in the 17th century. As history turned out, I mourn both missed opportunities but the former more than the latter. Well, maybe Canute had a viable bid too.

What benefit would there be to united scandinavia?
Thanks for this video. European history is so interestingly complex . I'm interested in the Yellow flag shown at 18:40, could you please tell me what it is and what it represents?

Hmm, as a Swede with some familiarity with our royal symbols i can deduce a few things. Danish flag canton means it's Danish. There's a crown symbol above a C4 combo which stands for Christian IV, king of Denmark. IEHOVA DIRIGE MEVM (Jehova directs me) would be his royal motto. The flag is too simple to be his standard so it must be a Danish battle flag, honoring the king. There is allso a heart and an eagle. There are several hearts on the Danish coat of arms which presumably have some significance but i don't know what. Can't tell you anything about the eagle except that the symbol is common.
Nice video. Just 1 thing, Spain was not really centralised, under "Catholic Kings" and even after it, Spain was divided into several Kingdoms which had different institutions, justice and laws.
Please please a video about the Dutch Baltic trade (the unknown trade wich made possible the Dutch Golden age) Completely unknown even in Holland is the baltic trade wich preseded the Atlantic trade, build the Dutch merchant marine. Made possible Dutch don't produce food so early while other lands are still feudal
Great channel, has been entertaining and educational as i plan my time travel takeover of the 1500's
To this day Sweden has not paid reparations to Poland for the Deluge.

Fiscal Military States sound pretty cool.
Ära!
The wealthiest person in swedish history might have been Bo Jonsson Grip. It is claimed thet he personally owned all of Finland, and big parts of Sweden an Norway. His methods were of the more unorthodox kind. One of his wifes, of a very wealthy family, died in childbirth. Grip was asked, as it was clear that a choice must be made who to try to save, he choose the child. The woman died, and the child maybe a day later. But the law was such that the child inherited the mother, and the father inherited the child. Her family was not happy.
Gotta love the Historia Civillis bop
I am a second generation American of Swedish heritage. I grew up listening to my Morfar tell stories about our ancestors.

Food from the baltic was so cheap for the Dutch. Farmers here just stopped and went to the cities to specialize in trade

This pattern of states centralizing for more military power and thereby becoming worse places to live for almost everyone makes me wonder if LOTR is a sort of "What if the centralizers lost?" fantasy.

Propaganda and illusion of self rule? Sounds oddly familiar.
All this begs the question: what the hell was Norway doing! Its funny to watch this as an American of Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, and German descent. All my ancestors beating the hell out of each other over trade routes in the baltic. Recontextualizes my Medieval Two campaigns in these regions.

Norway was part of Denmark at the time so whenever Denmark did something so did Norway.
Sweden and Finland was during that time one country
