Yeah, 2012 was the year the 3DS both shut a lot of mouths and killed the Vita as soon as pokemon XY was released, it didn't even stand a chance. You're forgetting about Kid Icarus Uprising, that was a damn good game.

hey kid. wanna play half-life on the 3ds? i can but need this weird thing called luma3ds its a custom firmware, and it lets you install apps that 🅱intendo would never let on th 3ds exist with luma3ds you can get half-life for 3ds its called xash3ds and it is based off of xash3d a reimplementaion of valve's goldsrc engine, which runs half-life so yeah hack ur 3ds eedyot there is also quake 2, quake 1, doom, wolf 3d, and duke 3d for people with hacked 3dses.

Wow. I remember back when i was a kid in 2011, i was really mad at nintendo bcuz i just bought the dsixl from the first model grey DS and they dropped the DS like an anchor lol. I remember the 3ds wasnt doing too well sales wise. I wanted it but my parents just bought the dsixl so i was out of luck. So i was happy when the 3ds and wiiu started to cause problems for Nintendo. Once Super Mario 3D Land came out however, I started to see things differently. The 3ds unlike the wiiu recovered. I eventually matured and didnt want Nintendo to fail bcuz i grew up with Nintendo. At this point, 7 years later, the only reason i would buy a 3ds is to play ocarina of time, majoras mask 3d and super mario 3d land. Im banking on Nintendo releasing those games for switch since the 3ds is slowing down and release it just like they did for the ds games on wiiu

I genuinely prefer the intense 3d. It hurts your eyes you say? There is a reason why the 3d option is on a slider. It's called put it on low.

The problem for me wasn't the intense 3D but the crosstalk/ghosting of the display in high-contrast scenes. Unlike what this video implies, it wasn't just due to not viewing at the right angle, but the fact that Nintendo used lower-quality LCD panels. For Ocarina of Time 3D it was extremely disorienting in the dark dungeon scenes and I typically played the game with the slider about 1/3 up. 3D Land had an option to increase the depth of the 3D, but while there was some more LCD ghosting, it wasn't as distracting and typically occurs in the background. The New 3DS addressed this problem to some extent but crosstalk is still noticeable at times. Sure, they needed some cost-cutting measures, but it's a real shame because I remember how hyped up the DS Lite's brightly-lit, high-viewing angle screen was.

That brief mention of Freakyforms got me thinking about how there's barely any extensive or critical coverage of it online. Considering how much of an obscure title it is, perhaps it'd be a fun game to look at in the future 🤔 This was a great, concise video on both certain aspects of Super Mario 3D Land and the 3DS in general. The time you've spent here on it definitely shows.

I think out of all the consoles I’ve played, the 3ds will always be the most memorable. Seeing other people playing games that I owned was such a great experience. 3D land was the first game I ever 100% completed and seeing those 5 stars on my save file was so satisfying. Part of me is happy knowing that people can still have these experiences due to the 3Ds still being alive.

607 Tbh the only other console I remember playing extensively was my Dsi and that was mainly due to Pokémon. I had other consoles but they were only played on short sessions. The only other console that comes close to giving the same experience is the switch.

Am I the only one who genuinely loves the 3D effect and always has?? It blew my mind when it first came out, and to this day it's pretty disappointing when a 3DS game I want comes out with no 3D. (Looking at you, Sun and Moon.)

Sun and moons framerate was already really unstable, if they enabled 3d im sure the frame rate would be in the single digits, so im sure they just didnt bother with it because no one would want to play a game running at 5 fps

I think the 3D effect was done really well in most of Nintendo's first party games--3D Land, link between worlds, and especially Samus returns.

I won't, because it was what convinced me to buy it. When I saw Sonic Boom Fire & Ice in 3D, I knew I want it. I'm surprised I don't regret buying New 3DS instead of 2DS (or waiting for emulator). If Switch was 3D too, I would buy it for Sonic Forces in 3D.

Can talk about the fact that the 3DS has games that came from the N64, GameCube, Wii, WiiU, GBA and all other Virtual Consoles. The 3DS definitely is the best Nintendo Experience I’ve had in a while

The 3DS supports: -NES VC -GB\GBC VC -Game Gear VC Special cases: -20 GBA games for Ambassadors -SNES VC supported only by N3DS line _Ports_ of games from other systems: -N64 (Legend of Zelda OoT\MM, Star Fox) -GameCube (Luigi's Mansion rerelease) -Wii (DKC Returns) -Wii U (Super Mario Maker, Captain Toad) -Sega Genesis (3D series) Simultaneous release with other systems: -Wii U (Sm4sh) -Wii (LEGO games...?) I guess you could say it has "games from" these consoles then, but "all other Virtual Consoles" is misleading.

@@zetaman8924 Ok, but not _exactly._ You can Spin Dash in Sonic 1(unlike originally), and the 3D effect was definitely not present in the originals. I consider them ports for those reasons. They're kind of between the VC games and the 3D Classics games in this way, so I guess the argument can be made for either.

This video is really bringing back memories of when I got my Cosmo Black 3DS with SM3DL for Christmas 2011... ...now i wanna play it again. Once again, great work on this video, AK!

Nintendo really did do a great job with reviving the 3DS, now it's probably their best handheld system. It's a shame they couldn't have done the same thing with the WiiU, it was a great console but had many of the same problems as the 3DS.

Remember, the SP is not only the first GB line to feature a backlight, it is also the first one to have a rechargeable battery...

Agreed, the Wii U had so much potential, but it was handled so poorly...

Everyone talks about Wii U game ports to Switch, but I really wonder how many 3DS Games will be ported over. I can see this game coming to switch with some other minigame or puzzle instead of the 3D puzzles... but then again, it'll fit Nintendo to leave them as is with the 3D button and call it a day. Maybe they'll make it a bundle game with 3D World too. Great video as always! 🧡

My dude, Freakyforms was one of the most fun games I had! I think it's been gone from the eShop for a LONG time, but I do have a physical copy of Freakyforms Deluxe.

The one game that pushed me to buy a 3ds back in the day was Paper Mario Sticker Star. I had a rough start with the 3ds. Animal Crossing New Leaf saved it for me though.

I had a 3DS since elementary school and today it is still one of my favorite systems

So did animal crossing, smash bros, Mario kart, etc.

The fact that Nintendo is never going to release those GBA games to the general public really grinds my gears. But hey, I guess that's your reward for paying an extra $80. That, and some other bonuses that I can't remember.

I remember getting my first 3DS. I was suddenly the coolest kid on the face of the earth. I still use it to this day. Just because I have a switch doesn’t mean the 3Ds automatically becomes obsolete.

I remember receiving my first 3ds on Christmas, and it came with super Mario 3d land downloaded. I played that all day. Then I got stuck on world 5 because I couldn’t get the castle because I didn’t have enough star medals. I finally got the 50 star medals, two months later, and then I beat the final castle. I picked the 3ds up once again, and I felt that feeling of nostalgia. It felt amazing. I collected every star medal, got the gold flags, and played the final level. The most beautiful feeling ever.

I got my 3DS 8 days before my 11th Birthday on December 12, 2013. It was a Red Limited-Edition model with Super Mario 3D Land installed on it. My 3DS will be 5 years old in a few days.

Nice video. I have to confess I don't remember much about the early days of the 3DS. I feel like I looked at it and saw no reason to buy it but felt that I was destined to get it some day. Then there was the price drop and the whole "early adopter's only games." I cannot remember how I pulled it off but I somehow managed to buy it in this tiny window where I got the $170 price tag and had enough time to register and get those exclusive gba games so yay for me!!! 3D land definitely was a big pick me up and I think the first game I really got into on the 3ds.

I'm one of those people who really like the 3D! In fact, if the game doesn't have 3D I might not buy it. EDIT: I'm fine with games that use the touch screen a lot not having 3D, like Warioware or Picross 3D 2 (even though that game has 3D for some reason).

Amazing video man!! Glad to see it popped up in my recommendation today 👏👏👏

This was an enjoyable, informative perspective of a title staying true to it's form. 3D Land is a key example of a simple, direct, and effective video game contribution for entertainment value. Plus that Bowser (reappearing) last battle is just dang memorable.

I got my original Nintendo 3DS in July of 2011 too!

@@p_yoshi I really wished I did. You see, what happened was I purchased a Nintendo 3DS before th price drop, so I automatically get the Ambassador Program right? Well... here's what happened, I didn't connect my 3DS to eShop in time. Because, I was a little kid back then, and I didn't know any better. I regret it everyday.

@@colinkrulz I heard that the trick worked after the price drop and I had gotten my 3DS after 2013, so if I did get the gba games it wouldn't be exactly intended though :P Sorry if you misinterpreted my previous comment

The 3D in the 3DS is amazing and I miss it. I never had issues with the 3D. My first 3DS game was Super Mario 3D Land. I got Rayman 3D and turned the slider down, easy fix for the intense 3D. Also Sticker Star is underrated and its tiring to hear people take a jab at it everytime it gets mentioned.

I remember freaky forms, I used it to get home brew on my new 3ds xl ...

@@squidstems FF7 is overrated, and Crash has aged better than SM64 but it was nowhere near as revolutionary. It's just a traditional platformer with 2D-esque level designs where you walk forward instead. Mario 64 actually made use of 3D space so was way more exciting at the time. Nowadays I'd rather play Crash but in the context of the late 90s it's clear which game shits on which.

SOMEONE ELSE KNOWS ABOUT FREAKYFORMS?!?! NO WAY! No joke, I am actually really surprised to see mentioned it in this video. I bought it when I was a kid and played the hell out of it.

I remember when the original 3ds came out. I got mine in June of 2011, I entered 5th grade playing it every day. Now I’m a senior in high school soon to graduate.

4:20 I used to love that game. But nowadays it feels like 12 year old me wasted 7 dollars.

3D Land and NSMB2 were my first games on the 3DS, and I still think those are the best games I've ever played with Maker 1 and 2 on Wii U and Switch.

Free D

I never found the appeal of Super Mario 3D Land. It was easy and slow to death by boredom. Actually, for me the 3DS was exactly the contrary of the DS. By that, I mean that on the DS, I loved every game series but Pokémon and Zelda. While on the 3DS, I hated everything except Pokémon and Zelda.

Barely, to be quite honest. A few times playing it broke my circle pad and I had to manually replace it. Needless to say, it's not my definition of "enjoyment". Smash 4 was much better on Wii U when compared to 3DS, but Smash 4 is far from being my favorite in the serie overall. If I'd have to rank Smash games... this would be my list: 3DS > Wii U => Brawl > N64 > Melee

I ACTUALLY JUST STARTED PLAYING FREAKYFORMS DELUXE AGAIN YESTERDAY!

I remember playing Freakyforms when I was younger, people should talk about it!

The 3D effect on Dragon Quest 7 was great

OoT 3D also helped the 3ds, but it launched before the price cut and was just a remake. Despite that, it did push the 3ds further when it released and helped it leg out a bit better, was the first million seller for the 3ds, and after the price cut/around that same Christmas, it did pretty dang good alongside Super Mario 3D Land and MK7, basically 3rd right behind those 2. (I remember the sales data back then) To date, it’s pretty close to the original OoTs sales. For a remake, that’s pretty dang impressive. Just thought I’d add that, because while not as strong as new Mario games, it was the first start of the 3ds slowly turning things around, helped it last up to Christmas, and also performed well alongside Mario when those games released, but it often doesn’t get any level of credit for that just because those 2 games changed things even more...but remember, they got to launch after the price cut and around Christmas which gave them and the 3ds a lot of sudden momentum. OoT 3d wasn’t as fortunate to release at that same time, and is also just a remake rather than a new game. It deserves some praise for holding the fort before Mario showed up. Not to take anything away from 3D Land and MK7, obviously they were the most key to the 3ds turnaround, I just wanted to shout out the unsung hero that is OoT 3D Also, 3D World still > 3D Land

Man, I remember only getting GB games and not having much for a while until I got Fire Emblem Awakening and just getting absolutely blown away. I really doesn't feel like it been that much time...

3D land is my go-to pick up and play game without a doubt, I never get sick of it!

Actually, after playing Pilotwings Resort, I noticed something interesting: you can look past the player. This is actually a useful effect to help the player see where they're going. Other highlights on the 3DS include A Link Between Worlds, Ever Oasis, and that one game with the Noble Haltmann.

6:38 is what got me to subscribe And I expect more of this!

If you press L, R, and Start in Super Mario 3D Land, you can reboot the game, which is pretty useful for deathless runs. If you complete the game without dying, you get shining stars instead of of stars that don’t shine.

I remembered freakyforms for being a wacky game I played a lot... But now I remember Freakyforms for its deluxe version, and it’s usage to mod the 3DS lol.

Don’t you dare insult Freakyforms. I remember spending soooo much time on Freakyforms Deluxe. It’s way more fun than you’d expect. I’d actually want a new game for the Switch, if they added more content and made it more suitable for older people, and polished it a bit, but kept the weird aesthetic. Maybe I’m just weird for liking it though

With Mario 3D World, Nintendo finally realized that 3DS games don't have to be like looking at a whole world, but rather, looking at a diorama is much better, and fits the system.

I subscribed, as this video entertained me. I shall say you are underrated.

And now the 3DS is 11 and Nintendo killed it in favor of the Nintendo Switch. I'm going to be 18 soon. Dear God the time has flown.

I remember getting my first 3ds for my birthday. It was so excited. I got this dinosaur game and played it non stop. Also played a lot of the AR games. I didn’t even care that there was barely any games

There is 1 thing the 3ds needs to change the resolution. 800 X 240 was too low or if your confused its 400 X 240 for the top screen and 320 X 240 for the bottom screen
