Today’s episode actually comes from a comment and a question sent in by one of the viewers of the Doc On The Run KZread channel.
This was Jean, wrote in and she said,
“Hello, Dr. Segler. I had a fifth metatarsal fracture repair surgery five weeks ago. I was started to walk without crutches and a knee walker or a scooter as of yesterday, but my foot feels achy, though. Well, as a runner, when can I possibly resume running after my metatarsal surgery?”
This is what everybody wants to know.
I didn’t do the surgery and I don’t know all the details, but I can tell you that depending upon when you’re going to run after a surgery depends upon several things.

Thanks so much for this video!!! Feeling so grateful. 🙏🙏🙏 Now I am on the 4th month since the shaft area fracture surgery. Actually, in my case, I broke my 5th metatarsal bone (shaft area) 'cause I missed a step wearing a stupid pair of high wedge heels on some uneven ground. Ugh. It wasn't a stress frature due to running or overtraining.) I have been doing pretty well, and my surgeon gave me the greenlight to resume running after a couple of orthorehab sessions on the 2 and a half month point since the surgery. So, I have been gradually ramping up miles, but I am not feeling perfectly pain-free. As a midaged female runner, I think my bone has been weakened a bit. (Would I need BMD test?!!!🙄😬) Yes, I totally agree with you on the point of having to check my life style, quality of sleep, nutritions, stress level, and so on. I will keep those precious tips to run safe and healthy. Again, thank you so much for your answer to my Qs!! (Oh, before I go, could I ask you about consuming pre-run energy drinks? Would the highly caffeinated energy beverage be detrimental to bone health?)
