How smart are orangutans? - Lu Gao

View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/how-smart-a...
Along with humans, orangutans belong to the Hominidae family tree, which stretches back 14 million years. But it’s not just their striking red hair that makes orangutans unique among our great ape cousins. Lu Gao shares some amazing facts about these incredibly intelligent great apes from Asia.
Lesson by Lu Gao, animation by Anton Bogaty.

That's because he knows and/or knew, that staying close to the zoo meant he would not have to forage for food, but instead just be given food.

I recently heard this story where a member of the orangutan survival foundation went into the habitat to remove a venomous snake from the nearby river, however one of the orangutans thought the man had fallen in the river and offered a helping hand up, it was quite amazing to see and just goes to show that some animals are more human than they seem.

It's heartbreaking that so many of these gentle creatures are getting hurt by humans... We just uploaded a video about an adventurous rescue mission, where Orangutan Nenuah - she was forced to work in a wildlife show in Thailand - is brought back to her native home, by helicopter. The moment when she felt the grass of her native forest underneath her feet for the very first time will give you goosebumps.

I am Indonesian, living in Java to be exact. A brief: We have more than 17.000 islands, and our population is about 250.000.000 people, where almost 200 millions of them live only in Java and Bali. I would say this is why our people are less concerned about the other islands such Borneo and Sumatra where deforestation occurs the most; simply because it doesn't have a direct impact in our lives. We hardly get paid for our daily needs, how do we take care of other things like that? I mean we don't have a choice. The second reason is that we are developing country, we need money to feed poor people in small cities. Thus, we let foreign investors to invest in such industry because we are helpless to process our own natural resources. So would you rather to; save the orangutans and let the number of unemployment raise, or just leave it that way. My friends who live in Borneo say that the haze happen every year due to the deforestation, that it becomes a common thing. One local actor said that: Indonesia is not a POOR country, Indonesia is POORLY MANAGED country.

Yes but poor choices have poor consequences. I would consider it a poor choice to continue to allow deforestation to happen, destroying thousands of acres of natural rainforest that is home to an endangered species. The consequence would inevitably lead to extinction, which is horrible... no matter how many people are employed- it's not worth losing a beautiful, intelligent species over. Ever.
