How should we view the dreams we have of our dead relatives or friends?(GDD-0299, Master Sheng Yen)

When we have dreams of our deceased loved ones, the best thing that we can do for them is to recite the Buddha's name or the sutras and transfer the merit to them. This is the best way to help.

Its so complcated. The living people think that dead people come to tell us some message. But arent' we all dead and reincarnated in a way? Who knows the dead we are dreaming of has already been reborn somewhere and we still keep thinking he is dead and the reborn does not even have our memory, does not even know we are thinking of him. Just like right now we have no memory of our past lives. In that sense we are reborn and yet dead for someone/ in someone's memory and we appear in their dreams. What is real then?

Well. My dog hated my deceased loved one. So. When i "halucinated" the encounter, my dog was tripping too~ cause she growled and barked just like she did before they passed. Splain that!

It seems that all Zen masters, buddhists, etc. teach us that dreams are just dreams. However most of the reincarnations of old llamas and abbots are all identified through dreams. Can anyone help me understand the difference?

There are different kinds of dreams some based upon our own imagination and other are bad dreams from evil ghost some dreams are good dreams about some good news from God. The mostly people are truthful and good in their deeds have some knowledge of future happening of their life from God. So dreams are important.

I dreamed of a past love making love to me. It was so real I woke up drenched. I guess I never got over him. Then I just dreamed again, that we were having a surprise party for him. What does this all mean. One more thing is he took his own life and I've heard that if you commit suicide you won't make it to the other side. What do you think?

He is a good soul, but his explanation however does not match my experience at all. It happened twice. I knew, and he knew he was gone. So i need something on a visitation-type dream, ya know? Can someone help?

***** Wow, thats amazing. I visualized it as I read it. My brother died in 08, sometime after that, I was feeling so hurt and guilty. Then one glorious night, while asleep, I was in a Golden city that looked like Philadelphia, my birth town, but goldish. It was a busy road in front of me, I look across, and there is my Brother, on a bike, doubling a lil black boy.He told me he was ok without talking. Smiling so big. Him and the boy waved, he was helping the boy get to his place. When I reaized this, I woke up and my life changed forever.

I wish he could give insights more in a general perspective, not only based on Buddhism, Christianism and regarding Muslim's beliefs. Just a general concept of it.

If dreams are meaningless, then why do dream dictionaries exist? This guy is so narrow and dismissive. Too practical. That's the problem with Chinese. Everything happens for a reason. And dreams are messages from the higher self or universe or unconscious. Ancient people have always known that. They are not meaningless.

I watched the video. I didn’t hear him say that dreams are meaningless. The message i got from the video is that, don’t be too attached to the dream. If you do dream of your deceased loved ones, chant amitabha, dedicate merits to them, wish for them to be in a better place. If you don’t believe (which i think you don’t), you can simply wish them well and happy.
