How SERBIA Became A POWERHOUSE In Sports? (Novak Djokovic, Nikola Jokic)

Спорт

With Nikola Jokic from the Denver Nuggets, Novak Djokovic the GOAT tennis player, a legendary woman's volleyball team, Serbia really became a powerhouse in the world of sports. With a population of just over 7 million people, this small Balkan nation has been making waves on the global stage, achieving remarkable success in a wide range of sports. So, how did Serbia become a force to be reckoned with in the world of sports? Today Nick Fuze looks at the reasons why Serbia is great in sports while also giving a perspective on how he grew up in Yugoslavia - now Serbia.

You should re-make this video, and replace with corrected one, with more focus on water polo, European Championship 2001,2003,2006,2012,2014,2016,2018... + 2 silver, 1 3rd place. World Championship 2005,2009, 2015... + 2 silver, 3 3rd place. Olympic Games, gold 2016, 2020, + silver 2004, 3rd place 2000,2008,2012... Many more medals from other competitions, and from Yugoslavia era... And this, 4 gold medals, 2014,2015,2016,2016... and on Saturday, perhaps today, water polo young selection plays FINAL on world championship! Cheers!

As a Serb raised in a western country I see significant reasons through different eyes. The sporting culture is merely a spinoff to their attitude and way of life. From little kids they are spoken to as an adult and not babied like in the west. They're taught nothing is just given.. If you want something.. YOU go and get it. Strictness and high achievement is expected as it is academically. However the biggest difference I've seen is how kids/adolescent are dealt with if they don't perform well Regardless if it's a teacher.. coach or parent.. the treatment to failure is brutal honesty. Cute participation awards don't exist.. if you're crap it's an embarrassment you deal with. 2 things result : either they cry and quit or they come back swinging harder and faster. Passion to succeed and a strong competitive spirit becomes ingrained. Combine that with a culture that has an obsession with being 1kg overweight and there you go.. Supersport Serbs everywhere!! *The Catch* - This attitude is magnificent for breeding athletes.. the issue is everyday life can become a knife edge!

We were dominant in water polo, volleyball, and other sports. The problem is our football; we are very bad at it. But hey, there is Croatia, a former Yugoslav republic that is playing amazing soccer with 5 million citizens. Balkan is the cradle of sports. Imagine the USA dream team in basketball vs. the Balkan dream team; it would be a match of a century, and finally someone would be equal to the USA in basketball. I kind of admire them in sports, mostly in basketball, and sometimes in football. I like their teams in general, you can always find 2-3 guys that could become special if they had more help. Croatians also are pretty good, Yugoslavia was already really good at the time before the different ethnicities decide to split the country. It could be genetically but they were not as tall up to some 70 years ago. It could be their food, but not the food tourists buy in the restaurants. They tend to eat balanced food, not as much meat. If they eat meat there will always be vegetable and salad on their plate as well. But, with Jokic it is more genetical because his brothers are tall as well and the food he was eating while growing up was anything but healthy.

Generally, people from Dinaric Alps are simply the tallest in the world so it's no wonder the whole balkan region has an average height of 6'1, and the closer you get to the mountains the taller people get. Go to Republika Srpska, visit Trebinje and see people whose average height is close to 6'2

@@bokiste7536 You are right but if there are statistics available you will see that Serbs were not as tall as they were in later years (years after the WWII). Other nations were not as tall as their respective population of today. Each generation seems to be taller but with Serbs it is much more extreme (well that is what I have been reading). Serbs eat good food, well balanced and lots of fruit. Maybe, just maybe good, balanced food contributed to their height. But I bet that they still didn't reach their potential. It can be checked medically.

I don't want this to sound racist, but above all, perhaps the most important in the whole story are the genes that come from the Dinaric mountains, the Dinaric-type gene, where the biggest and strongest people in the world live. When you mix that with everything said before, there you have dominance. Especially in sports where strength and height matter. This group includes all the peoples of the former Yugoslavia. Very similar to Dinaric genes are Nordic genes.
