We usually say - 1.6 as electron as negative charge and we say +1.6 as proton as positive charge. So mam is correct

Actually , Rutherford discovered the 'presence of proton in the nucleus of atom' through the gold foil experiment , which means , he just located the place where proton lies in an atom , whereas , the proton subatomic particle itself was discovered by Goldstein .. I hope this clears your doubt ...
