VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
On 10th of Jan 2021, the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made the grand annoucement for the plan of the line city in the Saudi Arabia and this is by far one of the craziest projects ever witnessed by mankind!!! And while most people are fascinated by the grandeur of the Neom city, what we fail to see is that, this is Saudi Arabia's desparte attempt to cope up with an economic nightmare. Yes you heard that right, one of the richest nations in the world is facing an economic nightmare that is hidden in plain sight.
The question is,
What is this hidden problem with Saudi Arabia?
What is this NEOM or line city project?
How is NEOM meant to resc ue Saudi Arabia?
And why do people think NEOM is meant to fail the state of Saudi Arabia?
To understand the importance and the vision of the Neom city, we first have to understand the economic scenario of Saudi Arabia. You see the core reason why Saudi Arabia is super powerful is because, it is the 3rd largest producer of oil in the world. and more importantly, it also has the second largest oil reserve in the world.

When oil was cut off from the United States during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, Henry Kissinger told Faisal "If Saudi Arabia does not lift the boycott, America will come and bomb the oilfields." King Faisal replied back "You are the ones who can't live without oil. You know, we come from the desert, and our ancestors lived on dates and milk and we can easily go back and live like that again." But I don't think king Faisal's quote remains true anymore.

@@ravindilip Got a detailed tour of a waste treatment facility here in the Chicago area. By the time they are finished treating the water it is potable. We don't use that of course. So, it goes an extra step so that it can be discharged into a local river and is used as "grey water" to water a nearby golf course and park. Of course, in the Chicago area we don't have any shortage of water, but in areas that do, recycling like this could drastically reduce the need for "new" water. By the way, a lot of the energy used comes from the methane collected in some of the processing steps. This is currently only used where heating is needed but could also be used to run generators.

Saudi Arabia won't get enough tourism from Neon to come even close to what it makes with oil. They're making a big mistake. They should invest in microchips and advanced manufacturing.
@dagmarbubolz7999
9 ай бұрын
@@jamesjonnes forget the tourism, they collect investor money with their big visionaire projects, then take this money to invest in whatever brings them real revenue (stocks, gold reserves, bitcoin?,fonds etc), then when the projects fail and investors want their money back, they will first delay then they have already made their fortune with it and will give you just your investment and maybe a bit of an interest rate back (if at all, because every big investment is also usually risky, you can win a lot, you can loe a lot too if it fails). So basically, you wasted money and time that you should have invested directly, so YOU would have earned the profit, not them. You'd think, why would rich people be so dumb? But remember, they also invested in theranos. and there will be groups selling to less rich people, basically robbing them of their retirement plans. We have 2023 already. In 2030 they want to have stuff ready with technology, that doesn't exist at a level yet that can be implemented in a sensible way (think the self driving assistent by Tesla, or kinda Musk tunnel) and they just flat out fool you. Like yes, you can get from one end of the city to the other end in just twenty minutes with high speed trains. But you can't get anywhere inbetween, otherwise that train has to stop constantly, and well that is just a train then taking it's time, definitely not 20 min. High speed only makes sense when connecting far away points, not in a sense of public transport. So you will either use these drone taxis (don't find the idea that there will be tons of them in that narrow space between the walls convincing), or you will be stuck, or the train will exist but take it's time to travel. Don't see a lot of problems solved either like water management, waste management, hazard security etc. All it seem to be are shiny projects in 3-D game graphics, that will totally look different (worse) in real life if they ever come to an end like predicted in the first place.

As in, its not the cost needed to recover the production cost but the cost that oil needs to be sold at to not shake the budget!! The problem with Saudi Arabia is that countries like UAE and Qatar have been pushing ahead with their diversification much earlier than Saudi Arabia, so the "middle eastern tourism heavens" titles have been snapped up by those countries. These countries have managed to build up a hospitality brand by means of their airlines, which have developed their fame all around the world. I mean, airlines like Emirates and Etihad (UAE flag carriers) and Qatar airways (flag carrier of Qatar) have done HUMONGOUS levels of publicity of the hospitality for UAE and Qatar. But the thing is, Saudi Arabia doesn't have such international level of hospitality reputation that UAE and Qatar have. This makes it disadvantageous for Saudi Arabia to attempt to diversify. Also, apparently, there were gigantic aquifers under the Arabian peninsula which were formed almost 10,000 to 15,000 years ago when the monsoons were more northern oriented. However, Saudi Arabia, in its desperate bid for food security, drained up large quantities of those aquifers to irrigate its fields to the point that almost 60%-70% of those aquifers are depleted now, forcing Saudi Arabia to shift its food to other countries, and to increasingly rely on its desalination plants. It also has to plan for new plants to cover for this deficit as well. Some back of the hand calculations have said that Saudi Arabia if being forced to use almost 25% of the oil it produces just to power the desalination plants because of its water scarcity, which is projected to increase further to around 50% when the aquifers inevitably run out by the 2030s and the kingdom is forced to rely entirely on desalination. This would be disastrous if the Saudis don't diversify its energy mix quick enough. Also, there has been some argument by experts who claim that Saudi Arabia is fudging its numbers and inflating its claims of its oil reserves by almost 40%, which puts the kingdom in a bigger problem.
great case study bro

I work in Saudi Government sector and I can assure that there are many more initiatives taken by Saudi Govt. to diversify economy away from oil. NEOM and Qiddya are just few headline grabbing projects, but Saudi have many projects going on in industrial sector, chemicals, manufacturing and recently in IT services industries. Recent announcements from Microsoft and Oracle to establish regional data centers and invest billions of dollars is a testament. Moreover, there isn't 63% unemployment, many Saudis gave entered the job market and performing jobs at all levels. The skillset of Saudis have greatly improved compared a decade ago. Things are moving in right direction and it is just not the construction projects Saudi depends on. Moreover, Saudi Arabia is rich in other minerals too, which has been greatly untapped

I am working on this project. Till date this project is still possible and money started flowing.
KSA needs $90 per barrel not to break even the cost of oil production but balance the books.. meaning to run the country (they have high expenditures) and not many other sources of income. KSA need not worry they have enough gold and other mineral deposits.

They got phosphate, that’s about it. There are so many other countries who are wealthier in natural resources and minerals and with a much greater variety.
The resorts project however are so cool!
Just how much pressure does MBS have on his back? Running a nation is really carrying a cross. I salute MBS for being fierce and innovative for his country. NEOM is a do-or-die project. Though young, MBS is the only one with enough balls to bring massive change in his country. I hope for the best.
I think the data is wrong, saudi dependency on oil is more than 85% & they are still very profitable. Interesting thing is Saudi Arabia is one of the 20 countries that enjoy a current account surplus.

Hi Thinkschool, Please make the correction as the breakeven cost mentioned in the video isn’t related to actual production cost. The cost mentioned in the video is Fiscal Breakeven cost which basically means the minimum price of the oil per barrel at which Saudi Arabia has to sell in the given fiscal to meet the budget requirements without going into deficit. The actual production cost for Saudi Arabia is around 9-10 dollar per barrel. You can triangulate the data from the Saudi Aramco Financials statement.

@Imara Chaturvedi "The break even term mentioned in the video is FISCAL breakeven and not just break even!! As in, its not the cost needed to recover the production cost but the cost that oil needs to be sold at to not shake the budget!! So while oil companies (Like Aramco) profit from selling oil, oil COUNTRIES are considered to profit only when their oil profits can cover govt spends!!"

I think you’re talking the wrong point. They are referring to the National Wealth Fund, so the relevant numbers is fiscal break even.
At the 3;30 mark, you show Saudi's breakeven (or Cost or to produce) at about USD 90 per barrel, in 2013. In 2013, I created an Excel Spreadsheet, showing Saudi Arabia's Cost per Barrel of Oil was about USD 13.

The guy don't understand Saudi's cost for producing a barrel is around 10 USD per BARREL and MBS is trying to steer his country out of a banana Republic situation. All big economic turn arounds are risky business and there is no easy way out. This is like China opening up in 1978, it was a risky move too😊.
Hey there, great job buddy Just a suggestion if you are open for it, avoid using firstly/ secondly. Use first, second ..... these are more correct
Wonderful explanation ❤️
It deserves to be mentioned that Saudi has one of the lowest costs of oil production in the world. They can keep making money even if the price of oil falls to 30 dollars. The break even point shown in the video is the fiscal break even point where the cost of the country's social programs is added into it. As rightly stated in the video Saudi's societal problems are supported by oil income and that support is drawn from Saudi Aramco the oil producing company. The video should have also mentioned all the earlier cities that were conceived and came to a halt. And 7 years seems to be a short span for the city to be close to completion in any reasonable way.

A lot of Saudis earn from Kafala system so they are "unemployed". This corrupt strategy resembles a form of indirect slavery, making it harder for migrants to escape such dreadful situations. Female domestic workers who attempt to run away fall victim to sex traffickers. The power of the Kafala system is the fuel for contemporary modern-day slavery.
Aman interesting great news 👍 👏
Very informative presentation. I think this is why both the US and EU are pivoting out of the Middle East.
Very very thorough PODCAST ❤❤❤
As a Saudi citizen, the whole era is extremely fascinating. I hope we somehow emerge victorious by the end of the coming 50 years.

The only thing is that such a huge project would have been planned over a long time and would not be started unless it was guaranteed to be successful.

thanks for the smart explanation. I do not see that much sense to build such a narrow city. a sandstorm can cover it. It will look like the condominiums built around a subway, very crowded. I am sure they will build more around it after a while.

Even with the right technique and assets some investors would still make more than others, as an investor, you should’ve known that by now, nothing beats experience and that’s final, personally I had to reach out to a stock expert for guidance which is how I was able to grow my account close to a million, withdraw my profit right before the correction and now I’m buying again

Good vision but lots of uncertainties- technological, geo-politics, raw material resources, etc. 2030 for revenues seems unlikely. I am working on projects for over a year without much traction yet. Hope it comes through soon.
