How's them apples?

Was Johnny Appleseed for real? Where did apples originate? And how do horticulturists develop better and better varieties of the fruit? Mo Rocca visits the Johnny Appleseed Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind., and goes on a cross-country search for the history of apples, including a new variety - the Cosmic Crisp - coming soon to a produce market near you.

I was born in Kazakhstan, wild apples are everywhere. Looks and taste vary extremely. Some are way too sour to enjoy, others are lightly sweet and mushy. I loved a variety of very small apples (1 inch), firm flesh and a refreshing combination of sour and sweet. Former capital and biggest city has "apple" ("alma") in its name.

Mo, you are a hoot! Loved this article - esp since it included a city from my home state. If you are ever in Central Indiana (south side of Indianapolis) you should look up Adrians Orchard (on West Epler Street). This orchard is one of the remaining few in our area and they have the very best apple cider I've tasted in all of my years. Thanks and keep on, keepin' on.

Never know if your apple tree will grow bitter or sweet apples, so you splice branches from trees you know grow sweet apples to the branches of trees that grow bitter apples to get more sweet apples.

I wish they would come out with a non GMO apple that is low in malic acid. Even the ambrosia apples irritate my stomach and esophagus. So I can't eat any of them. Even though I love them.
