I’ve been seeing a lot of people in this section talking about the F35 and S400. While many of the comments have correct information, one thing seems to be lacking. The inner workings of radar and stealth. The S400 can readily detect stealth aircraft through the use over lower frequency radar bands such as the L band. Due to the frequency of the L band, stealth technology is practically useless against it. However, the L band doesn’t offer the search radar a lot of information in terms of discriminating between various contacts. These lower frequency bands offer a general idea of where a contact is but not necessarily what it is. This is where the higher frequency S and X bands play their part. Higher frequency bands have a more focused beam of radar radiation and are thus able to acquire more details on a radar contact. This is where contact discrimination comes from, ie determining if a contact is an F16, an SU30 or what have you. In fact, weapons grade radar locks are almost always acquired with the x band radar frequency. However, this is where stealth plays a part. These more focused beams of radar radiation are more susceptible to disruption from stealth technologies such as stealth coatings and stealthily shaped aircraft. This is where the F22 and F35 have an advantage. Due to their technology, radar arrays have a much more difficult time acquiring and maintaining a high frequency radar lock. Thus weapons grade acquisitions are much harder to maintain to shoot down said aircraft. However, this being said, stealth aircraft aren’t invisible from radar, they simply have radar cross section reductions through their stealth technology. In fact stealth aircraft have a variance of their RCS depending on the attitude of the aircraft in relation to the radar. In layman’s terms, stealth aircraft aren’t equally stealthy everywhere. So various tactics are used by stealth aircraft to maintain their advantage against various opponents. Often by managing their stealth abilities against various detected threats. However radars, like those seen on S400 can and will see stealth aircraft on higher radar frequencies. This is where things get important between the F35 and S400. Stealth aircraft may pop in and out of high frequency radar acquisitions on the ground, but discriminating these acquisitions is very difficult. Meaning, knowing the difference between the F35 and an F22 by the S400 is very difficult. This is why the US keeps its F35 away from S400 users. It doesn’t want to lend information on the difference between the high frequency acquisitions of the F22 vs the F35. Having possible opponents in the dark about the intricacies of their stealth aircraft’s RCS is of paramount importance to the US and why it’s current posture of sanctioning S400 users is maintained. I hope you find this bit of information enlightening. Best regards from the US.

It's sort of their fault if the much more costly f35 can already be detected and all that remains is for the f35 to be fed in data on some radar. Only might offer a slight advantage if it's not used for a time, and if used properly; if it can be hit by any older system then what's the point? I believe the future of stealth is in newer drones and other ways, even then, eventually anything might get detected.

@@johncherskov5755 I wouldn’t say that’s it’s greed, as for economic sanctions damage both the US’s and the sanctioned party equally. Thus both sides lose money. So monetary greed doesn’t play a part in the stratagem. I would say it’s more about reducing the proliferation of systems like the S400/500 indirectly. Additionally, the ability of radar to detect stealth aircraft by no means indicates the ineffectiveness of stealth aircraft. Yes they CAN be detected, however that doesn’t mean that they WILL be detected. Does that make sense? The stealth allows for aircraft to have significantly higher survivability in highly contested environments by allowing for deeper penetration of enemy controlled airspace. Which is an advantage that could prove to be key in a tier 1 conflict. The US’s capabilities are greatly enhanced by having fifth gen aircraft like the F22 and F35. These enhanced abilities could prove to be decisive over the majority of would be foes.

@@johncherskov5755 why are you upset? It’s seems a though you’re getting worked up. No need to get that way. With the whole greed thing, I’m merely stating that the sanctioning process is more about geopolitical goals rather than economic ones. Not that greed plays no part in politics or in the military procurement. Just that the sanctioning process is less about greed than other things. That’s all. In a way you’re right about stealth fighters being able to be defeated by lesser technology. But the same could be said for any technology. There can always be a way to defeat a superior foe. I’m just saying that this fact doesn’t mean that stealth is useless or unimportant. There’s a reason that every major global power is heavily investing in stealth. It offers a bunch of advantages that can’t be ignored. Additionally, the F35 isn’t very expensive. Really, it’s a very affordable aircraft. An F35 A costs around 75-85 million per unit. That’s pretty amazing when you consider that a new F-15 costs 88 million and a new euro fighter costs 100 million. For the price, the F35 is one of the very best deals on the market right now. It’s not nearly as expensive as one might think.

The US doesn't want Turkey to have both F35 and S-400 at the same time because S400 radar can be tuned by knowing the path of the F35. Once the optimal settings to detect a F35 are found and its radar signature recorded, these settings and F35 radar signature can be sent to all S-400 systems around the world at other F35's detriment. Since India has the S400 now, the US will have to keep it's F35 far away from it and that make drills and interoperability excercises impossible.

You're dead wrong not even close. The US is using mobile 4700km range TPY-2 fire control radars, connected to Globus AN/FPS-129 usually as the early warning system depending on location, this is usually the closest one as it's in Norway. But Globus can see 25,000 miles so literally anywhere on Earth and is mostly for anti ICBM. the US missile systems are launching off 2400Km range Arrow 3 missiles and Mach 18 RIM-161 missile. And before you even try to deny any of this just know that Globus has been around for over 20 years, and this is just the newest fire control radar I know of that is 4,700 km range. And just taking a look at their missiles should tell you all you need to know.

The S-400 uses all radars in the region, including over-the-horizon and even digital television in the decemetric range. The S-400 can act as a control system for an air defense positional area, combining various zonal air defense systems and giving them commands to destroy targets, as well as using missiles of old air defense systems to destroy targets. To deploy communications over long distances, a 15I6ME repeater is used, which provides communication for the 98Zh6E control system at a distance of 30/60/90 km from the 30K6E command post. Thus, the S-400 is a means of organizing and managing layered air defense. This is for those who understand what this means.

At a basic level, the S-400's field of view for the search and fire control radar is limited to the horizon of the earth. Because of this common limitation, search radars are typically placed on tall masts to better see over the horizon. An even better solution is to position radars on specialized aircraft, airborne warning and control aircraft systems (AWACS), or on stationary tethered balloons known as “aerostats.” However, without over the horizon sensors, the S-400, and other powerful HIMADS system, are vulnerable to a low-altitude attack by cruise missiles, which, in large numbers, can overwhelm an air defense system.

It is Russia who is always acting in an aggressive manner, and you can see it now, and must have seen it in its behavior for the last several decades. As to the word Demond, how can someone believe in demons in an atheist country 🤔

THe logic is missing. Turkey wanted to buy both the F35 and S400. Having both would let Turkey test the S400 radar on the F35. If this data was leaked to Russia it would allow Russia to further improve the S400 to shoot down F35. So there is a good technical reason for the US not to sell F35's to Turkey. But that doesn't explain why the US might sanction India for buying the S400, when India has no plans to buy the F35? Amit should examing these issues in more detail instead of repeating the regular "talking points" that doesn't explain the real reason.

Simple explanation, if u new physics, u can check, that i say next. Firsly, stealt is simple - not visible in some interval of frequencies, u devolop material and for radiowaves (like all radars) it's pretty much possible, but for visual spectre it very hard (from 400nm to 1000nm). Secondly, each radar, that works in interval of wavelenghts for this material and shape (cz radiwaves is big lengths from 10m to several cm), would needed much more power to detect vehicle covered by this material and shapes that was optimized to reduce RCS in this wavelengths. After shooting down F117 or B2 in Jugoslavia war by S-35 (there i maybe wrong, don't remeber system correctly, but this system worked in longer wavelengths and this why could spotted this stealth vehicles), some of pieces travel to russia, and was investigated, that's why in russian SAM's used radars with several general wavelengths (but this idea is general, cz stealth tech was developed and published in USSR back on the days). This is also maybe one of the reasons, why US blocks defense armament (mainly SAM's) from Russia, but also maybe it's so called "general line" of us gov.

Although good note on weaponary and diplomatic equation. Why Russian air defense is so impeccable in comparison to American THAAD system. It all goes back to early 60s when USA started mastering the stealth technology aircrafts. Therefore USSR comprehended altogether that they are nowhere to imitate American technology. Hence it was the incubation of a new idea for Soviet Russia to rather go for a phenomenal shift towards developing air defense technology to counter the arch-rival superiority of American flawless, much admired air power and their marching towards manufacturing the fourth generation military hardware. Therefore S-400(built with state of the art technology) is far superior than American THAAD(previously offered to us during Obama's administration, which is presently stationed in Guam island).

Actually it is all about money. American diamond shape stealth tech is based on Soviet old tech. USSR determined this tech as too expensive and with very limited effect for such amount of money. USA had much larger military budget, so they used it. Same about Russian an US air defense doctrines. USA as a sea power with huge military budget focused on offensive doctrine with many airplanes. USSR and Russia as a land power with limited budget focused on air defense because it is much cheaper. In result USA has many planes, and Russia has better air defense systems.

Pradeep Kumar thats not why russia has better Sam systems. The truth of the matter is that the US always had a much bigger and better Air Force, with the tanker force to give it the legs to get bomber well into Russian territory. However russia could not do the same. Because the US had less territory to defend and more aircraft to defend this territory. It was far easier and cheaper for russia to develop and build advanced Sam systems to defend air space rather than building a bunch of aircraft and airfields, facilities, supplies and trained personnel in remote areas of Russian territory for defense. That said Sam systems are a poor mans answer to air power and is typically less effective than manned aircraft (which is what the US prefers to use).

Neither did anyone in the Russian military or Russian government. As such his work was reviewed by the Russian government and military and was found to have no military value and was subsequently released for publication. American engineers were quick to apply the scientists theory towards the application involving stealth. Russia didn’t discover stealth. They didn’t even know they had the algorithm for stealth. Otherwise they would have never released that information and they would have built stealth aircraft first instead playing catchup and fielding their first flying stealth combat aircraft approximately 40 years after america.

The main reason for the CAATSA sanctions is economic: not fund research and development in the Russian Federation and sell more expensive American systems. In terms of effectiveness, the war in Ukraine shows that there are many weaknesses in this system, which is not very hardened and does not meet its nominal specifications. Commercially and politically, it is definitely attractive to countries that do not want to depend on the Americans, or that wish to make their independence or non-alignment visible.

A HIMARS rocket has actually destroyed a S400 system. This makes the S400 junk when fighting against anyone with the HIMARS or its' sister the GMLRS. That would be all of the NATO countries. The cost of a S400 system is between 300 and 500 million $ depending on how many add ons you want while the cost of a HIMARS missile is 130,000$. YOU do the math......what would you buy ?

American's most advanced Missile defense system is "Patriot" which literally sucks as we can see from past events. Recently when Houthis attacked Saudi Arabia with ballistic missiles, it couldn't even detect them. Also during Iraq War it's couldn't managed to differentiate between enemy and friendly target, which resulted in downing of its own aircraft.

from Nicaragua, thanks a lot. It would be nice you show how you get the information, but I assume is because India got the necessary information from Russia before even to buy the S-400 system. Very nice your explanation. Nice detail explaining why sanctions are the only actual military offensive the USA has, because their systems are obsolete in purpose, the US Military contractors OVERCHARGE the Government, the US Government has US Congress Members as part of those companies, profiteering from it and making also the legislation to avoid abuse and regulate :) so funny, in any other country that's called CORRUPTION. And that's why Trump cut Boeing because $3 Trillion are in between and F-35 requires 10,000 hours of maintenance just to make it fly. And not too many can be built because secrecy nobody knows the real cost, the real deal, and just a few factories can manufacture it, a terrible mess, a scam, but legal.

@@gazz01 IND US defense ties has crossed 20 billion in the past 4-5 years. With apache, chinhooks,p 8 Poseidon,mh 60 r Romeo, sig sauer rifles etc etc. basically we are now diversifying our defense . So the USA sees india as a very lucrative market for weapons. If tomorrow US sanctions us then india will have no other choice to buy weapons from Russia or France. If u read an article around a week ago The USA congress is considering to waive off india why because of the above reason. Second thing USA knows that india is facing threats on both the fronts unlike turkey 🇹🇷 So considering the situation india will definitely not back out of the deal even if it faces sanctions.

Engagement radar not only guide missiles it search and track targets to, like patriot radar Detection radar is needed for all-round visibility and target detection at long distances The detection radar is slow since it uses longer wavelengths, it does not allow missile guidance, but it allows you to detect targets at a greater distance Simplified, everything works like this: 1. The detection radar finds the target, then transmits its coordinates to the engagement radar 2. The engagement radar turns towards the target, finds it and start tracking 3. Done, you can launch a missiles One engagement radar can track several targets and attack them simultaneously, but only within its own viewing angle The whole system is modular and can work without a detection radar Engagement radar + command post + launchers = patriot

    1. Detection radar turns on, and everything flying knows where the S400 is. 2. S.E.A.D. mission knocks out S400. 3. Non-stealth aircraft can now enter the area.

Se r Ms to me thst there are more variables to operate the s-400 system and be effective, than the variables that are built in into the stealth aircraft. Makes sense not to make both available to the enemy. Look how secretive the Israelis are to their defense systems. Not even money can motivate them!

I think you miss the point, or at least don't communicate the point, that every S400 system comes with a team of Russian technicians. As part of their job of deploying the S400, these technicians will gather information about how to best use the S400 against the US and its NATO allies. Clearly, this is a good and sensible plan from the Russian's perspective. Conversely, it is obvious and reasonable that both the US and many NATO countries don't want the S400 anywhere near their hardware since they don't want the Russians to work on optimising the performance of the S400 system against their weapons. Why would they want to give Russia this advance information? Countries like India (and others) need to decide which side they are on.
